Celestia dreads 'Drudge Day,' the weekly time she spends dealing with legal affairs. As problems roll in she finds herself melancholy; has she really seen all of this before? Surrounded by a parade of pleading ponies, Celestia begins wonder if immortality is all it's cracked up to be.

Very touching and enjoyable . One misspelling caught my eye:
Celestia watched the line of assembled ponies grow shorter and shorter as the day went one.

Otherwise I enjoy this story and sheds light on Celestia's personality. 5/5

Excuse me, how is that sad. Most of it is about some "Do All The Paperwork" day, and then we get 3 paragraphs of how Celestia is bored by the fact everyone dies around her.
Summary: Equestria needs a government. 6/10.

SPOILERS, Obviously

The intent I went for was that each situation would show either the crippling amount of dead ponies she remembers or the boredom caused by doing things endlessly. She forgets Inkwell's age and embarasses herself, she's seen all the civic problems over and over again, she's full of memories of departed ponies no one else knows about, and she's been pranking the castle guard for so long they can predict her. I was hoping to show Celestia grappling with the burden of immortality; I used the paperwork day as my way to get her into several social situations with different ponies.

Well a Glorious "Nice story, I liked it" to you to!

No need to be rude, Mate.

Enjoyable. and yes it's sad, that others have different opinions is beyond me, but let me assure you that this story was great, and, well, nice... :pinkiehappy:

I enjoyed that, but I think it could more effectively have been set before Luna's return. It seems to be that Having Luna back would be enough to keep Celestia cheerful for a good long while (not to mention, to halve her workload).

Great job on this one, for once I'm not going to yell at you to write more School Daze.

lol... that's ok, i'll do it for you. :p
That and Three Hooves...

Celly needs a hug :pinkiehappy:
Great story

Celestia does need more love

Paleo, what intellectual wonder. Love ya!

1)...Cranberries?

2) As much as I am leery of making Celestia and Luna full blown deities in these stories, I wish more writers would give them some sort of perspective on the afterlife. I don't think any being, short lived or long, can exist that doesn't contemplate or have some belief about the hereafter.

3)That said, this was surprisingly much more upbeat than most treatments of the "who wants to live forever" trope--- with a refreshing of perspective on Celestia's part.

4) She REALLY needs to take a vacation.

5)It's odd that she can remember all those details of that one nobleman's family, yet forgets that Inkwell is already aged... and that she's pulled the same pranks on the guards just a week prior.

pretty great outdone yourself again paleo :pinkiehappy: basically the story is how immortality has its pros and cons being a benevolent deity requires alot of responsibility and with it you will lose yourself in ever flowing streams of time. whereas pros are your powerful but i feel like if i had power in such a manner i would do bizzare whacky stuff like discord except on a nicer scale :scootangel:

PS. Dr.Oscid is such a cool name:rainbowkiss:

Very nice. I like the monikers. And the references!

“Do you like bananas?” :trollestia:
That got my attention. :rainbowlaugh:

That was quite intense, and a rather new angle to approach both Celestia's predicament with immortality, and the way to deal with it. I heartily approve.

Interesting to read one that deals with the price of immortality without going into a angst fest. You did a darn good job on this, and on the characterization of Her Serene Majesty.(and at the same time poking fun at the memes).

And yes she really needs a vacation.

Discord floats down on a lead anvil, "Immortality is only a burden if you give a damn! Take me, for instance! I could care less who lives or dies!" His smile turns sadistic, "Immortality belongs to the sociopaths. A terrifying thought, isn't it, mere mortal?"

486419 *Alondro smacks Discord's invasion of his commentary! Discord is hurled aside by Alondro's incredibly indescribably enormous powers! Because when Alondro god-modes, he doesn't do it half-assedly!* Begone foul demon! Take thy taint of wickedness elsewhere! Celestia has realized that she need not despair; for though she bears a burden, it need not be a burden of pain! Dear Celestia, let not Discord's words trouble thee. Remembrance must be borne, if only by the universe, if only as light traversing the vast distances forever. Do we not see even the first birth pangs of the universe? Do not the dying cries of the first great stars still echo in the deeps? Still, Celestia, thou art young. Thou still doth remembreth time as years. Those there art which count time by the waning of galaxies. Let thyself find comfort, to know that among them, still some find joy, some solace, some quiet wisdom and endless reflectance. Doth not Tom Bombadil still sing his merry songs by the Willowman's river, as he had sung them in the long-lost ages? Do not the last Ents still rumble the tunes of the Entwives and tend their waning forests, content in their duties, for they pride themselves in their humble work and yet no pride sullies their hearts. And still upon a tall wind-blasted hill far and away, there doth grow an old and twisted tree, never tiring of sitting in one place for five thousand years. It lives, and that alone is enough. Drink of the deep waters of the universe, Celestia, and find peace in being.

I didn't find this that sad, to be honest, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. The big strength of this story, to me, is the excellent characterization of Celestia. It's the little things that stuck out the most to me: she's not above pigging out (which we know is canon as of recent episodes) or pranking her subjects (I like it when writers find ways to reconstruct and reconcile the joke interpretations of Celestia, such as Tyrant and Trollestia, and I also liked how you went ahead and deconstructed Trollestia with her guards having mapped out all her usual pranks) or acting like a sulking filly when the mood strikes her. Even she has limits and we see glimpses of those in this story.

I found it a strange that she has a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of individual ponies' family trees and history in general (and pretty much everything, it looks like) even though ponies barely register to her. The ending was also lackluster: in the end nothing changed. She didn't really learn anything, change her perspective or come up with a new solution to her problem: she just resorted to a tested and true comfort method but brought Luna along this time. On the one hand, this is a single-chapter slice-of-life fic and it's not like real people undergo some great change every time they're feeling down. On the other hand there are slice-of-life stories where the characters do change.

One other thing that confused me: when does this story take place? At first I thought this took place during the banishment but Luna's appearance refuted that, of course, so is this pre-NMM or post-NMM?

Personally, I hate the 'sad' tag. I want a full-fledged 'drama' tag.:flutterrage:'Sad' has connotations a 'drama' tag does not.

I was hoping to shoot for a Celestia that remembers a lot but has a hard time organizing it. Vast quantities of memories could bounce around in her head. The same way I sometimes wonder about the order I met my high school friends I picture whole decades getting mixed uo in the alicorn's minds. I had hoped to have an ending involving her coming to grips with her position emotionally; I considered finding an emotional perspective personal growth. YMMV. I wan't sure there was anything I could do in a major way: kickstart her aging? Iou're right in that I was looking for a simple day-with-X status quo.

I was thinking post-NMM. Her being out at an Academy is just a wink to my larger story, "School Daze.":trollestia:

Thanks for the analysis!:yay:

486419 and what do you do when you grow bord of both sanity and madness?

643573 You make the assumption that I would!

Don't worry, nopony will force immortality upon you.

I, on the other hoof, shall be crafting the next universe in my spare time. It shall be 100% Pony. :trollestia:

644270 no love for griffons?

644768 I could be bribed... ;3

Is this before or after the events of FiM?

This was one of the first fanfictions I read when I first came to fimfiction.net. That was back in, what? April, March? Now I have my account, I've come back to add a thumb and a favorite.

"Yes mortal, I remember who you are"

That speech is one of my favorite scenes ever. Don't piss off immortals.

Very nice Celestia characterization. Reminded me a bit of the the elves from LoTR.

2618082 Bah, they gave me nuthin' but peanuts! NO ELEPHANTS!

2620898 This will not stand. THE PLATYPI WILL OVERRUN US!

Platypi... platypuses... platypae...

2621088 Nooo! The otters! They deceived us!
We should have known from their barbaric practices like holding hands while sleeping.marinesciencetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Sea-otters-holding-hands-Author-joemess-from-austin.jpg

She advanced with a pale glow surrounding her. “I remember the day your great-grandfather was conceived in my gardens. I remember the beauty of your humble farming nine-times great-grandmother. I recall the reasons whole cities celebrated for days when your twentieth-time great grandsire died. I alone know why if the resting place of your thirty-sixth paternal grandfather's bones were found a hundred-foot tall monument would be too small to erect upon them.”

The terrified Royal Blue was relieved when the Solar Monarch's verbal assault suddenly relented. She hung her head, and her vision was focused on a place long past. “I told him not to do it, but I was elsewhere upon the field that day, and only his sword was found when the bodies were cleared.” She gave a long sigh, and an unseen weight seemed to make her shoulders quake.

Celestia looked Royal Blue in the eyes again. His heart nearly stopped. “Do you like bananas?”

He was taken aback. “What?”

“Bananas; do you like 'em? They're serving banana smoothies in the dining hall. Eat and laugh today. Get out of here and forget this ever happened; no one deserves to have this kind of stuff dumped on them.” She pointed a hoof weakly at the hallway.

This is a Dr Who line really, probably should have been said by David Tennent.

5)It's odd that she can remember all those details of that one nobleman's family, yet forgets that Inkwell is already aged... and that she's pulled the same pranks on the guards just a week prior.

Not to mention how she gets Swift and her grandmother, Velocity, mixed up.

Man...how do you do it?
Every time I read one of these things, I want to put my head through a wall to see if I can get it to work better...
There's no way you'll end up writing for television or movies...you are way too good...start novels...

Thanks

I'm 28K on my first self-published work, actually. Hoping to have it out this year.

Brother, PLEASE, put it up here when it comes out!
And keep throwing us stories here on occasion...even if you get as big as I think you could be.
HHH changed so many things I thought I knew...it started there. I care so much what happens to them now. And I want to see even more after that part closes. Don't forget them.

Thanks for the ride so far. Here's my ticket, take me around again!

Crystalheart.
