Thought this looked familiar. Now I'm wondering if this is taking place in a crossover game and he's there alone save for NPCs, or if he's just in pony-world, period, and there's a necromancer running around somewhere.
Most of it is, to be fair. The 'mask' they all wear also has a tendency to hide something ugly underneath, too.
Horses and ponies are prey species. Their out of proportion reactions of fear to things are probably hard-coded with the braver members of the species being the unusual ones. Prey species normally flee as their first and second natural reaction to threats with fighting being an absolute last resort.
I hope he finds some magic trinkets that he calls his 'charms'.
This is making me wonder if the NPCs are pre-spawned and are dying according to a scripted event like a real-time cutscene, or if they just periodically spawn in and you can save them or not, or if their spawning in is purely for the sake of keeping the zombie population to a certain level at all times as an explanation for them respawning in areas. With how many zombies a group of players can take down across a playthrough and how few of them there actually seem to be in theory after a few weeks of being on that island you'd wipe them all out unless something was artificially replenishing them.
I know I'm overthinking things to the extreme. Can't help it. In any case I'm enjoying this so far. A question though: why are the chapters so short? Is it due to the amount of free time you have on any given day, or what you come up with at the time, or are you replaying Dead Island and write more as inspiration strikes?

I try to keep the chapters to ~2k so I can pace myself and avoid burnout. I have a real problem with getting really cool ideas and then abandoning them because the muse is lost. If a chapter is more than 2k words then cool, but I try to at least get close to it as a minimum.
If fire isn't solving your problems, you simply aren't using enough of it!

Then there's also taking the sequel's lore into account which effectively implies that the vast majority of the human race is a ticking time bomb to ALL become zombies. Even if he gets off the island it doesn't matter unless he finds other immune ponies.
Obviously he's in a TikTok Infection AU that's also been made into a Dead Island mod.
