PatchworkPoltergeist

Some dork on the internet that likes ponies and flower symbolism way too much.

T

We were beautiful once.

Queen Chrysalis wants the changelings restored to former glory.
Cozy Glow wants power and freedom.
They both want a family.

There is a simple way to solve all of these problems. Provided, of course, a moment or two of discomfort.

We will be beautiful again.

I like it.

Damn, this is some good prose.

*softly* oh, okay

on a more serious note, that's some damn delicious changeling worldbuilding. I actually understood and empathized with Chrysalis before I remembered she's a less than reliable narrator

Take it from someone who helped edit this fic: It's is a wild ride and you should read it!

Amazing work as usual, Patches!

Well... This fic was horrifying.

Both Ocellus loss of senses and Cozy's loss of Body and magic...

This is going to be something very different...

Reminds me a bit of a Jackie Chan Adventures fic, called Webwork. Check it out if you haven't, might give some inspiration for the inevitable horrific transformation sequence. It's the only time I've seen a description of what it'd be like to have your bones be ground to dust by your own muscles and your skin become weaker and weaker until just moving causes it to rip off as an Exoskeleton is grown in. Very good fic.

I have no mouth and I must scream

I did, I am, and I need more! This is genuinely very interesting. Compelling I dare even say!

Also holy shit, that was insanely cool, fucked up, dark, somber and weirdly wholesome?

"Now this might sting a bit..."
*Melts Child*

Oh my god, the next chapter literally just dropped as I asked for more. I could not ask for more Immaculate Timing!

Next chapter already, hell yeah.
This is amazing, I really want a sequel/continuation that further expands the Changelings lore, Tirek and Cozy's interactions going forward, how the rest of Equestria would react to the new Cozy. But the ending we got is so good I think I'd be ok with this being it.
Still, if you do get the urge to go further, I'd be there right away! This was so good.

Oh my Gosh! This is so beautifully fucked up, and I love every moment of it!

12180242
Oh the mere possibility of this being the end of the story sets my insides on fire.
I've only just developed such an unceasing hunger for this story.
Alas I'll accept it If that is the case, but by golly, I would pay my left kidney for more!

The word that keeps coming to mind for this fic is “visceral”. Very good with the descriptions and the ritual was fun to read about.

I'm glad Cozy Glow and Tirek are still friends... Kinda.

I was really worried he was going to die and leave Cozy Glow all alone... On the bright side, they don't have to worry about her dying anymore.

Y'know, I thought that's the direction this was going but it was still a bit of a shock for it to happen.

Great work. That was a blast.

God I hope you do a sequel, I so want to see her hive

Very good. Disturbing. Both.

Oh, this au is gold like amazing cozy gonna redeem the changeling name for sure those fakelings/weaklings won't be tarnishing chrysalis hive name for long disavowed by the elder queens their gonna be proud of cozy cause really those weakling how good is friendship then unification in chrysalis eyes and other queens? especially when tested. specially, when Twilight takes the magic for Gen 5 to happen, the tribe splits again, and it's friends or survival again, history is repeating itself if the windigo disaster wasn't as nice a hint~

Heh, I bet the King Thorax and Harmony he so enjoy in easy times, gonna crumble in hard times a delightful treat for cozy to capitalize later, a knock off king born from harmony hopeful fool and it new species ruled by a skittle moose who know nothing about changeling culture or it true history their probably disconnected as right by the elders to hold from those guys for they so easily discard their roots it gonna bite them all so more sweetly~!

I do think Chrysalis did pretty well for a thousand years, survived Celestia quite well despite the tragedies.
She was one bold lady despite the recent losses and the fact that the origin of her love-poisoned form may have had a hand in that fall, for all we know!

I've seen the FIENDship is Magic if this au dabbles into the comic, that a lil queen cozy and Tirek will get a giggle, from cozy sharing Chysalis' personal history of her mother's conquests!

12180442
oh my god be more edgy

Ouuurrururugh

I love this fic so much and the amazing worldbuilding and the thing with the fox being like “my mate” and then the agape and the fact that these three genuinely coming to care about each other is a theme and it feels kind of like Chrysalis is the odd one out but Tirek still liked her enough to trust her about the water and Cozy still liked her enough to be worried she was dying and Chrysalis might’ve liked Cozy as a daughter even before the whole… everything and it’s just kind of really sad and tragic

Part of me feels like the agape ritual might’ve originally been conceived because a new queen would’ve been devastated to lose her mother so they had to force her hand and it got sort of twisted through the centuries? But I’m not sure

The one chekov’s gun I’m a little surprised/disappointed didn’t get pulled is angel’s grandson? I thought fluttershy would come wreck their shit. But that’s honestly just bc the rest of this story is so masterful; if it had been any other fic I’d have just seen it as a cute little reference, but the cohesion of this fic is otherwise so tight I can’t call it a missed opportunity over what it obviously is (cute reference)

This is almost worse than reading the thing

12180472
I love the world building in it is so easy to edge like equastria is easy for things to go very wrong if the Rube Goldberg machine is messed with or an extra step is missed, it's fun to speculate, dear im here to see are new queen own~!

I kinda knew were this was going from the very start, but still, It seems I was not prepared enough... boy, what a ride.

I think reading this drained me for the day, but still the body yearns for more. That's an odd feeling.

Excellent story, I hope I'm able to write this well.

Oh god I had to skim the last section because I was getting too queasy. Fuck you, take my upvote.

Honestly, I expected something along the lines of 'The ', also known as 'Coronation day', and it was not that.

I was not disappointed still.

Just a small thing, but I love big chess and little chess.

This is so good! One part I want to praise is when Chrysalis starts talking to the forest creatures, giving me some old-fashioned fable vibes.

Many have asked for a sequel, and I share that sentiment. But one thing I want to ask, and no one has, is if the author could share with us a pic of Queen Cozy Glow.

I read this days ago, and honestly, it blew my expectations so far out of the water, I've been collecting my thoughts since, and still don't really know what to say, exactly. Excellent writing.

The tip of my horn cracked the shield. Struck again. “I am no Celestia; my enemies rot in graves, not prisons.” The fracture spiraled down the sides. Shield fragments scattered like old excuses. I met her eyes and let my whetted fangs shine in her light. “I am Queen of Changelings; I fight to win .”

Put that on the cert

It's like Beezus and Ramona if Beverly Cleary had played host to Venom.

12179626
Yep, that's the idea. Chrysalis isn't lying; she believes wholeheartedly in what she's saying, and in what she's doing. As far as she's concerned she's done everything right (as queens always do) and is justified in all that she does. She cares about her legacy, duty, and what she considers to be the betterment of Changelings as a whole. Everything and everyone else is just along for the ride. She remembers Ocellus as the good Changeling who knew respect and obedience. Ocellus just remembers the fear.

12180167
This made me laugh WAY harder than it probably should have XD

12181222
:D

12182238
"We went an' cleaned out her dorm room about a week after she went to Tartarus, Twilight and me. Not sure if she needed me more for the moral support or just to move the ladybug terrarium Cozy kept by the window. She was hopin' maybe we'd find somethin' in there. A clue to... I dunno, why she did all of it. Or how. Closure, as Starlight called it."

"Did you find anything?"

"Nah. Well. Maybe? We did find somethin', but I couldn't make heads or tails of it none. Under the terrarium, we found a notebook just crawlin' cover to cover with these funny-looking notes of letters and numbers. Twilight realized they were chess notations, like the kind you'd take to record games. Cozy's old headmare said she used to be a regular chess club champ back before she graduated. Guess it was a souvenir from that. I sure can't recall her playing much chess at school."

(The interview concept for Cozy's backstory went belly-up and I opted for a traditional backstory fic, but I still had this hanging around. Big Chess as a concept has been a thing for my version of Cozy for so long, I actually forgot this is the first time it came up in anything published.)

This strikes me as an extended metaphor for faginy, a term for teaching or using minors to commit crime. Yes, the word comes from the Dickens character.

(It's been a while since I've done a mass reply like this, hopefully, none of these get mixed up!)

*one trip to Urban Dictionary later* Thanks!

Thank you all very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

12182245

This is so good! One part I want to praise is when Chrysalis starts talking to the forest creatures, giving me some old-fashioned fable vibes.

I didn't start out with the intent to write a dark fairy tale, but that's very quickly what I got. This style of folkloric writing tends to comes pretty naturally to me, and it managed to dovetail very nicely with the rest of the fic.

But one thing I want to ask, and no one has, is if the author could share with us a pic of Queen Cozy Glow.

Dearest reader, if I had any real art skills to speak of, I certainly would. I'm afraid the efforts must be left to whatever fanartist wants to try their hand at Queen Cozy. But I do have a color palette, if that's anything. 64.media.tumblr.com/5175aed101b71ad17ba86f7747b50f25/e2365773b007ccfd-9f/s540x810/04b4be3e9cc866e5a5c2fe1a3071597c84511206.pnj

12180273
Visceral both figuratively AND literally! :D

12180377
12180242
12180250
I really planned this to be a standalone, since the concept was built to end exactly where it does. A sequel really wasn't originally in the cards when I started but it expanded on its own in the process and... Well. It's not a "no". It's not a "yes" either, mind you.
I'll think about it. We'll see.

12180519
Angel's grandson (grandkit?) is more relevant for the theme than for plot since he's 1) a direct connection to ponies and 2) represents the values of those ponies coming from a relatively safe place where nothing bad happens. As the fox says, it doesn't work that way here. It's not personal, it's not evil, it's just nature. The rabbit and Cozy Glow both learn this the hard way. Fluttershy, maybe, might understand that. (Discord, though...)

As for everything else, yeah you're on the money. Well, mostly. The agape part of the ritual was more or less always this way. The old queen must be devoured for the new queen to truly take her place. She doesn't necessarily have to be killed, especially since she's already dying from the Jelly transfer, but you can't exactly take love from the dead. That and it's the only honorable way for a Queen to go. Making your heir hate your guts along the way just happens to be insurance to make sure they go through with it. If you notice, Chrysalis doesn't have many kind words for her mother either. Not that Changelings are especially gentle with their children in the first place.
Theoretically, in the event that the new queen can't go through with it, well. You can always get the jelly back the hard way. If she's unwilling to do what's necessary for the good of the hive, she's unfit to rule. Theoretically, because it's never actually come to that (in Chryslais's lines, anyway). In a normal situation, the rest of the hive is watching and cheering on the process to support the new monarch, so even if the old queen didn't force the new queen's fang, then the rest of the hive would. Though I suppose the Elder Queens serve as "the rest of the hive" in this instance so...close enough.

That or else an extended metaphor for generational abuse cycles. Though I guess you could kind of argue those two things aren't unrelated.

12183538
I always love that Cozy's cutie mark is a rook, which is both a chess piece and a type of con.

12183538
well this was my interpretation before you gave out the color palette

I was going to say, I think faginy extends, in a moral sense, to teaching your kids to hate Jews or blacks or Hatfields or McCoys. Though that, of course, is completely legal.

12183670

I always love that Cozy's cutie mark is a rook, which is both a chess piece and a type of con.

Ffffffffffffffuuuuuuu....

I never got that until now. But it's of a piece with the show's writing ("Deceptive cadence," anyone?)

12183670
Is it a specific type of Con? I thought "Rooking" was just a word for swindeling in general.

12184058
No, you're right. I probably should have described it better.

“Can you run?” My long black ears twitched. “Mm… I think not.”

Oh no you did not think you can sneak that reference past me

This was so beautiful. And horrifying. And I wish I could say more, but your stories always hit me like a ninja sledgehammer and anything I can say feels paltry compared to how I felt reading it. There's just so much packed into this story, from the personal grief of a queen to the grandeur of the entire changeling race, and yet it never once feels overloading. I really liked it

I’ve been lurking on this website for a good couple weeks now, reading plenty of interesting stories (my favorites typically involve Chrysalis, Cozy Glow, and Tirek because I have such a big soft spot for them, love villains mwahaha!), but man if this story wasn’t the straw that broke the camels back and got me to finally make an account here.

I found to be very interesting, a continuation in the future at some point would be awesome, cuz I greatly enjoyed it and I think it has a lot of potential to see the ongoings after Cozy’s metamorphosis.

Beyond the story, the actual written text has a great amount of eloquence and detail, I could imagine a lot of this very graphically in my mind.

Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future!

P.S. I should really try writing something of my own here sometime, you guys are getting my creative juices flowing!

The little red eye landed atop the pile like a cherry on a sundae.
“About time you shed the other one.”

It says something about me that this got me to laugh. Love a good bit of transformative body horror (says the guy who absolutely flipped out the first time he got pink eye. :derpytongue2:)

Dripping pink lacework spanned the length of her lithe new body. Her wings stretched so long and wide—a span greater than mine or Mother’s—that I mistook them for mucus at first.

Unexpected Flurry Heart parallels. There's something poetic in a resemblance between Cadence's first and Chrysalis's last.

I have to appreciate Cozy not only tearing the narrative perspective out of Chrysalis, but needing a few moments to properly digest it into her first-person. Brilliant metafictional touch.

Sounds like a band name.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thought that.

Brilliant work as ever, as glorious and terrible as crowning a new queen should be. (There is the question of what the crown is, but I won't poke into its business.) Love the nod to The Last Human in the source of the adderstone, changelings speaking the tongues of all creatures, and the fascinating blend of alien perspective and perpetual self-delusion that is Chrysalis's viewpoint. And I do have to feel sorry for Tirek by the end. Cozy protected her king, yes, but at what cost?

I just wish I'd seen the post when this went up. Don't know how I missed it. Still, better late than never. Thank you for this.

For me, the sharemind had stopped and started with the first Chrysalis, and she had always been quietest of the Elder Queens. Whoever came before her could not or would not speak with me.

Fucking hell. Using the four loves in Cozy's First Feast, and incorporating the four loves in a way that felt completely natural, was a stroke of pure genius. A whole entire beautiful ride from start to finish. 10/10. Take your trophy and go.
