Into the abyss

Our protagonist suddenly woke up in a panic, breathing fast and heavily. He looked around and found himself in complete darkness, illuminated only by small red lights dimly scattered across the area.

“Where… am I…?” he asked himself, holding his head with his hands. He glanced around again and realized he was in a vast cave system, the tunnels far too narrow for him to fit through.

“How did I get here…?” he muttered, placing a clawed hand back on his head. Then, he noticed the small, moth-like creatures fluttering around him—though they only resembled moths.

He tried to touch one but stopped in shock. His arm… it looked strange. His fingers had turned into long, curved claws. Glowing blue vents lined his arms, and he was now covered in golden, armor-like scales. And then it hit him—he recognized the appearance.

“Wait… cave, glowing vents, red bugs… oh no.”

He checked his head and then the rest of his body, confirming it. His new form was unmistakable: he had become Gaismagorm, the final boss from Monster Hunter: Sunbreak.

“Oh no,” he groaned, doing his best to maintain composure in this utterly bizarre situation.

“I was just coming back from a Comic-Con… first one in months. I didn’t even do much—just wandered around, looked at the cool stuff. I only had enough money for one thing. A Gaismagorm plushie…” he muttered, the connection not lost on him.

“Then I got hit by a truck… and now I’ve been reincarnated into another world. As an elder dragon.” He cringed at how ridiculous that sounded. “Still… better than ‘I Got Reincarnated as an iPhone in Another World’.”

He thought about what he’d left behind: an apartment with a Nintendo Switch that had only three games, a mattress on the floor, and an old, glitchy TV with just six working channels—two of which weren’t even in color. He worked in customer service, and hadn’t spoken to any of his family in years. For all he knew, most of them were gone by now.

He sighed and decided to try and get comfortable. He lowered his massive body to the floor and closed his eyes.

“On one hand, I’ll miss my body, my stuff… even that old mattress,” he said aloud, strangely soothed by the honesty of the moment. “But on the other, I don’t have to do taxes or deal with rude customers anymore. That’s… oddly comforting.”

As he yawned, he accidentally inhaled several of the red, moth-like creatures flying around him. He coughed, but then remembered something crucial.

These were Qurio—bio-parasitic lifeforms that lived within Gaismagorm’s belly. His body had become their ideal breeding ground. The Qurio were drawn to dark, high-energy environments where they could thrive, and no elder dragon was more suited as a host than Gaismagorm. While others like Malzeno could coexist with them briefly, only Gaismagorm could fully sustain them.

Each Qurio was a grotesque, crimson insect with transparent, frayed wings and glowing eyes. Despite their moth-like appearance, they were aggressive and viral in nature, known to spread a zombie-like infection to anything they swarmed. They fed themselves—and, by extension, fed Gaismagorm—by draining the energy of nearby lifeforms.

He sighed again. “So I really am Gaismagorm… and I need them. Otherwise, I’ll starve. Great… now I just hope I don’t run into a Primordial Malzeno anytime soon.” The thought of losing his one and only energy source chilled him.

“And thank god I woke up underground,” he added. “If this really is the world of Monster Hunter, I’d have been hunted and skinned alive by now.”

He looked at the narrow tunnels around him, pondering which way to go. He decided to make the most scientific, logical choice possible.

“Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, catch a tiger by the toe… eh, that way,” he declared, stomping off through the cavern system.

Meanwhile, in Ponyville...

It was a normal day, and Fluttershy was getting ready to help some animals after the ecosystem was damaged by the massive dome Trixie had recklessly placed over Ponyville.

The yellow pegasus approached a large hole in the forest floor and pressed her ear to the ground, listening.

“Hello? Is any mole in there that could help me, please?” she asked sweetly. Within moments, several moles popped out of the earth, smiling up at her.

With their help, she began to fill in the damage caused by the dome. A few Dogs nearby even joined in to assist.

Fluttershy would have liked help from her friends, but they were busy repairing the rest of Trixie’s chaos across town.

Just as the work was nearly finished, the ground began to shake. First softly—then violently. The tremors grew stronger, tearing the terrain apart. Their repairs were undone in seconds.

Buildings crumbled, statues fell, and several ponies were injured in the chaos. Sweet Apple Acres suffered as barns collapsed, causing pigs and cows to stampede in fear.

A lamppost nearly crushed a pony, but Rainbow Dash swooped in just in time.

As the shaking intensified, the Mane Six sprang into action. Rarity caught falling debris with her magic to shield a colt. Pinkie Pie jumped out of a second-story window with a mattress, tossed it to the ground, then leapt out again carrying two terrified fillies just as the building collapsed.

And then, slowly… it all stopped.

Rarity, holding Sweetie Belle tightly, stood among the rubble. Her boutique was devastated. Dresses were torn, fabric was ruined, and glass shards littered the floor.

“What happened??” Sweetie Belle asked, staring at their ruined home.

“I… I don’t know, darling,” Rarity said, as Opalescence crawled out from under a collapsed shelf.

At Twilight’s library, the unicorn emerged from a pile of toppled books. She rushed to her lab, where her instruments were buzzing like crazy.

The readings were off the charts. No seismic activity had been recorded beforehand. If her calculations were right… the source of the tremors had moved.

Away from Ponyville.

And directly into the Everfree Forest.

Author's Note:

I set this right after “magic duel” in season 3 because Discord would have solved all the conflicts in a snap of his fingers, specially since Fluttershy will be the most affected by the ecosystem getting destroyed by Gaismagorm
