Bossypants

"If you are afraid to look ahead, and it hurts to look back, look beside you and there will be your friends."

T

Lieutenant Logan Briggs was born into war, something he has known since his planets destruction at the hands of the Covenant.

Never did he consider peace an option.

After a mechanical failure during a Covenant assault ends in catastrophe, the lone human Marine awakens on a world untouched by conflict—a quiet land of strange creatures, old magic, and skies that have never seen the fires of genocide.

Here, the war is over.

For the first time in his life, Briggs has the chance to rest, heal...

...and start over.

But peace doesn’t last forever.

Beneath the soil, something stirs. Ancient. Forgotten. Watching.

Sealed beneath unfinished ruins and buried sins. It does not seek conquest...

It seeks erasure.
It seeks annihilation.

And when it rises, the world will burn.

Now, Briggs must choose between holding on to the peace he’s earned…
or becoming the soldier this world never knew it needed.

For a storm is coming.

And he may be the only one who can stand in its way.

Yeah so I finally started this story.
All though I'm not a big halo (yet) so my knowledge on the lore is spotty at best. But I like this so far.

The footsteps plodded closer, and the Lieutenant tensed his limbs. He had to time this right, especially since he would be facing what seemed to be three enemies. One common misconception people made was that grunts were cowardly, short bastards who breath methane... and that would be true to someone like an ODST or a Spartan. In reality, a grunt was roughly the height of a full grown man, and twice as big in muscle. Jackal's were about the same size as your average adult, but they were vicious creatures capable of tearing someone limb from limb. If Briggs wasn't careful, he might end up as nothing but a red splotch on the floor.

I don't know if this is a lore thing or not, would the grunts not be breathing helium on the account of their high pitch voices.

Ha, sorry HerrHauptmann, but the methane is a lore thing. Grunts, officially Unggoy, come from the planet Balaho. They breath methane in order to survive in oxygen-rich environments.

Though the helium comment got me to chuckle, cause I would have assumed helium the first time as well.

a monologue from what I presume is the flood, what a hell of a way to start a story and I am all for it

Ah yes the, isaked hero dropped at the right place at the right time to defend the lives of unknown innocents, cliche I was expecting.

12152479
Eh, you win some you lose some. Least its not the CMC.

12152487
A real nice twist would've been the griffons conducting a military exercise with the ponies, leading to the mc killing a whole bunch of innocents which goes to show that for once, the isaked mc should mind his own damn business.

12152490
Eh, that is a possible way of doing things. But I have a plan for this story already, and unfortunately, that particular type of method doesn't fit the bill. Some cliches will be unavoidable, but I'll be keeping an eye out and try to actively avoid them.

12152491
Well I think you're doing good so far, aside from the one I listed; you haven't involved the cmcs yet, the two ponies are random ocs with seemingly no ties to any known characters, and Twilight wasn't seen watching the night sky with a telescope for no apparent reason just to suddenly, randomly and conviently see Briggs fall from the sky.

12152500
I am glad you are liking it so far, and hopefully I will continue to meet those expectations. Trust me, the whole reason I started writing this was BECAUSE of those particular plot points of other stories. Keep in mind Ivory and Truffle's names, along with Hardy by the way.

I intend to do things a little differently this time around, but unfortunately, I can't provide any hints.

Thanks again for reading, danny43!

Laying back, Briggs once more let himself succumb to the depths of sleep, hoping that when he woke up...

...this was all but a dream.

Oh thank God, that explains his lack of reactions to a few things, you had me there for a moment, I thought you were going to be like most other authors and just have Briggs ignore how these equine aliens spoke perfect english, hopefully next chapter he'll bring it up.

12152535
It’ll be more in the chapter after next chapter. That’s when he finally calms down a bit to the point he can question things.

12152539
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the first thing he did was throw up, considering he just ate alien food, those microbes would do hell on his body.

And depending upon where this takes place in the halo timeline, one explanation Briggs could gaslight himself into believing is that these aliens are part of the covenant fringe speaking sanghili or unggoy or whatever, thus allowing his helmets systems or neurolink to allow him fluent translation, problem is, I don't know if humanity even knows of the covenant fringe so that could be bothersome to write around, plus if he does believe they are covenant fringe, then he can't come to trust them, not even truffle.

I can see Briggs idly singing the cadence from Forward unto Dawn lol

12152382
Yeah they breathe methane, it’s why their tanks explode and they’re always seen wearing a mask.

12152382
Fun fact about the Grunts, besides methane breathing, they are literally treated like slaves.

Halo for the halo gods! Doing what 343 can’t: actual good halo content!

Oh, this brings me back. I used to search for and read stories like this all the time on FimFiction, but - for better or worse - there seems to have been somewhat of a drought in that regard lately. I guess the "Halo isekai" genre was getting kind of stale and overused back in the day, but honestly, it's a huge part of what I'm here for.

Please continue this story. I'd hate to see a gem like this abandoned.

RAHHH!! One story at a time to set things right!!

That cover art is awesome. Who made it?

Gotta listen to halo music when reading a halo cross over lol as always I look forward to your next chapter 😊

He doesn't seem too concerned about securing that loose equipment. It has been established that there are bandits in the area.

Still, cool story overall.

12153326
Don't worry, it'll be addressed next chapter.

12153225
That would be me. However, I did not draw it.

12153794
Ya just made a new friend 😂

12152548
Did a bit of research, and apparently Humanity didn't know about the Covenant Fringe until near the end of the war. Fortunately for Briggs, he is here before the battle for Earth, and just after Reach was destroyed. So while ONI may know some stuff, he doesn't have a clue. At this point, it would be paranoid speculation on his part.

A Halo story with the Flood... what fresh hell are you about to unleash upon to poor ponies and lone human?

12168665
Soon. Busy with work at the moment.

It's Always a pleasure reading your stories, can't wait for the next chapters.
