Inconsistently updating since 2015

T

When Queen Chrysalis and her hive were expelled from Canterlot, all chance of them being able to gain the love they needed to survive vanished with it. With ponies knowing their existence they would become fearful, and they would develop means to stop them from infiltrating. Sure, perhaps one lone drone could bridge that gap, leading ponies and changelings to finally be able to co-exist, but another option presented itself.

An option presented to their queen from a god-like being from another world. A god named Arceus.

He promised to bring them to a place where her kind would be able to survive, to gather love without the need of disguises or subterfuge. All he was asking that she accompany some random ten year old boy on his 'pokemon journey,' whatever that referred to. It was an odd request, especially for a creature that was supposedly a god, but she was too desperate to refuse.

After all, how much trouble could this Ash Ketchum really get himself into?

So...when will this be happening? Like what stage of Ash's journey

Oh I remember this died fic. Will be interesting to see your take on changelings becoming Pokémon.

12212579
Very beginning, though for set up purposes this is going to be a month or two before his journey starts. Also allows me to have a few fun ideas.

12212630
Cool. WOuld be interesting if it was after the World Coronation, though.

Oh, Chryssy. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.

12212638
That probably would work rather well… except I haven’t seen anything in the anime past Sinnoh. I’m one of those who fell off the anime at Unova, though it wasn’t because Ash was dumb, it was because Team Rocket was too competent from what I remember of those first few episodes.

Besides, this gives me reasons to watch Kalos, Alola, and Journeys. Hoenn too, because I never watched that growing up too.

You have my attention, and I'm curious how this will go.
I'll be keeping a watch on this story. Looking forward to whatever shenanigans Chryssi will be getting into.

The idea is unique and has truly piqued my curiosity. But, and without knowing anything about the fic that seems to have inspired this one, I don't know what Chrysalis can bring to the table that an average Pokémon can't to keep Ash safe. I can imagine her not having the patience to deal with Team Rocket on a daily basis and cocooning them at the first opportunity.

I'm liking this a lot, and as other said before, I don't know the original story. But I'm wondering just how much the changelings will be like pokemons. Will pokeballs be able to catpure them? Will they use human speech or insect/horse sounds?

Anyway, this first chapter is a blast for me. I'll be waiting for the next one eagerly. Thanks!

Arceus is unknowingly putting the task of redeeming Chrysalis in Ash's hands.

Oh yeah, this is gonna be a good read.

This is set where Ash starts his very first adventure?
Kanto region?

Great chapter once again! So I think its fair to say that the changelings will be catchable, and that humans probably won't understand them.

I wonder, if one of Chrysalis' drones is captured, will she go on a rampage to get the drone back? I think she would.

And yeah, meeting Pikatchu now to meet him again later promise to make some drama.

12213404
I also love the main picture of this story. I will laugh hysterically if that actually happens.

It's gotta be Ash's Pikachu. Very interesting direction the changelings are going, which makes me wonder if other changelings, like Pharynx and Ocellus, might have different abilities. To me it sounds like the drone could be Thorax.

Does this Pikachu have the voice of Detective Pikachu from the games or Ryan Reynolds?

Ah! Changelings will be able to understand Pokémon... does this mean that when they talk to humans, they'll only hear grunts: 'Chan Change Changeling'?

Nice! Let's see where you take the story!

without knowing anything about the fic that seems to have inspired this one

Read it and grieve

Interesting change to have her join Ash instead of some other random trainers show up like the original.

It's a good start, but I have to wonder: Will the changelings be building up their own autonomous society with their own tools/technology, independent of human society? Changelings did govern their own society back in MLP, but for Pokemon to do that on their own volition is just... thematically wrong in this context. It would be like Tom actually catching Jerry in one of their cartoons, or giving guns to Pokemon.

And now that I'm reading...

their dear Princess Celestia so effortlessly defeated

Self-serving memory for sure; you seemed genuinely surprised that you won at the time.

they were clearly a powerful enough mage to trap her in… wherever she was.

It's pretty clearly not a place, which means that the power is not so much in trapping you as it is in transporting you there in the first place. The fact that you don't currently exist will do the trapping for Him. And I know what I did with that pronouns, it's genuinely my standard means of referring to Arceus because the Game Freak is not subtle.

scoffing and attempting to look away, only to still find Arceus there before her, as if she hadn’t moved at all.

Once again, not a place because The Original One is not to be trifled with.

Suddenly he was much closer to her, flanking her right, despite having not moved at all since he had first shown himself,

Because He's already everywhere. You just only see Him where He wants you to. Man, you've already done a better job of portraying God than TPC ever did.

She had thought him a simple mage. Now, it was clear she was dreadfully wrong.

Arceus is. All you really need to know is that you will always underestimate Him. Not because you always underestimate everyone (you do), but because you don't have heuristics that cover anywhere near this level of power.

keeping some child alive is nothing,

For those playing at home, Ash canonically dies for the first time in the Saffron Gym arc. (He got better)

a god-like being such as himself

You made an apple pie from scratch the Carl Sagan way, you're the God. At least in the context of that universe. :scootangel:

12213517
Plenty of pokemon use tools so they probably wouldn't think much of it.

12213407
Lore wise normal pokéballs only work if the pokemon allows it, and not much is really stopping most pokemon from just leaving.

12213556
It's not just the tools, it's the infrastructure, the social laws and hierarchy, and most importantly, the sovereignty over the land they occupy. In the games and show, these are all shown to be human-exclusive traits, and while I'd personally love it for pokemon to actually start breaking the mold that they currently occupy, I'm almost certain that such a drastic move in the setting will piss off a lot of Pokemon fans.

By the way, since there were a few of you who aren’t familiar with the fic that inspired this, it is called Changeling: Gotta Love ‘em All.

And I linked it in the previous chapter, for those who want to check out a fic that hasn't updated since 2018. (The author has logged in as recently as yesterday, so there's at least a fool's hope)

While I have never played Pokemon here is a guess on typing: Bug+Dark (+Psychic if you want to bend a rule), with Chrysalis as a Legendary.

I mention the above to ask if you intend on including the evolution option that allows an individual to replace "Dark" with "Fairy"? Or would they originally be Bug+Psychic and evolution would replace Psychic with Fairy?

What would the conditions for evolution be? If you wanted an analogy to Thorax's evolution, it might be being used in the same battle with a Fairy* type X times (Thorax's exposure to Ponies... maybe this has to occur after being traded as well?), high level of trainer affinity, and a high level. Maybe replace the "Fight alongside a Fairy type" with some sort of Stone. To expand this to the rest of the Hive in the show, reduce the requirements if the trainer owns at least one other Evolved Change long (AKA Changedling).
*Ponies have the powers and responsibilities of Greco-Roman nature spirits, even if most Pegasi only work weather on Tornado Day and season changes, and Celestia and Luna took over the duties equivalent to Helios and Selene from the Unicorns. Anyway, "minor nature spirit" seems like it might equate to Fairy, although arguably any Pokemon trying to defend nature from abuse could qualify, as could many legendaries if one at least drops the "minor" part, and often upgrade them to diety.

If one wished to remain close to her canon personality (which you might not!) Chrysalis should either be impossible to evolve (fitting for a Legendary) or BRUTALLY difficult.

12213569
I agree with your take. But Chrysalis is not a legendary lol. She doesn't even come close to a Legendary, even the lower ones as seen in the show.

12213670
She didn't, but we're clearly giving them a power boost in order to survive the Pokémon world. Being the Diancie to the changelings' Carbink is essentially obligatory.

12213670
Honest question (remember I have limited familiarity with Pokemon) : She won a fight (granted with a huge power-boost, but still) against someone who moves The Sun every day. So I seek education in what sort of an upgrades and along what specific ways of measuring power etc. would be necessary to meet the "Legendary" criteria? Is.it that you would qualify Cadance as Legendary and Chrysalis was just coopting Cadance's power through Shining Armor when she beat Celestia? Is it that it would take her more than X hours/days/weeks/months to render the planet lifeless (or podded?) even if unopposed?

It seemed that he had told the truth, though she wouldn’t be surprised if that changed later down the line.

Foreshadowing Evolution? Or just further establishing her paranoia due to expecting others to act as she would?

I feel like, if that was the case, Vespiqueen would have to be considered a legendary too, since it and Chrysalis are to what they are role-wise

12213819
The thing is, Combee is both near-worthless on its own and evolves through conventional means. Diancie's flavor ties with no way to actually "evolve" it in game is closer to how Chrysalis works, and the average changeling is casually throwing out endgame attacks and so is also closer to a Pokémon that doesn't conventionally evolve (eg. Carbink).

12213569
I agree with the Bug/Psychic myself, Changelings aren't necessarily mean or active pranksters by nature.

Then they could evolve into their Reformed state, swapping the Bug typing for Fairy. The Reformed Changelings always looked more like fairies to me... Sort of like a Faeling, eh?

12213833
Folkloric changelings were heavily connected to the fae by lore. And Gardevoir is definitely a card-carrying Seelie.

Dumb ways to die
So many dumb ways to die
Dumb ways to die-yai-yai
So many dumb ways to die.

I always saw celebi like arceus granddaughter from dialga and hoopa, granddaughter from palkia.

Intriguing, i love when people make chrissy actually love her hive

I concur with 12213833 that Bug/Psychic makes the most sense.

  • Changelings are extremely bug-like even if we ignore their bug-like design: they have a Hive, a Queen, cocoons, and most of their drones are named after arthropod body parts.
  • Changelings have the psychic ability to sense and consume emotions, plus Chryssy can use mind control. The Pokemon games’ closest analogs to magic are Ghost, Fairy, and Psychic. Changelings aren't dead/ghosts, and pre-reform they ain't fairies.
  • Dark is a fitting type too, but Bug and Psychic both capture something far more defining about what Changelings are, IMO.

12213569 Good ideas about evolution, but we needn't choose something so complex. Pokemon that evolve after reaching a high enough level of friendship with Trainers already exist! A Changeling, IMO, should evolve not by leveling but by friendship(/love) into a post-reform Fairy/Psychic type.

12213942 Same! Chrysalis acknowledging her Changelings’ cuteness lowkey makes her a way more sympathetic character to me lmao

12213813 For the record, I'm on team “Make Chrysalis a Legendary” (or at least Mythical) because she became powerful enough to beat Celestia, is uniquely powerful among her species, and IIRC she is the only Queen.

Yet the tricky part is that Legendaries usually represent and embody some general concept: Kyogre is Ocean, Rayquaza is Sky, Dialga (& Celebi?) is Time, Reshiram is Truth, Mesprit is Emotion, etc. The pony Princesses could easily fit in as Legendaries: Luna is Night/Moon, Celestia is Day/Sun, Twilight is Friendship, and Cadance is Love. For villains, Discord is Chaos, Sombra (in season 3) is Fear, etc.

What, then, is Chrysalis? Canon doesn't provide an explicit answer, but I think she could absolutely be Deception. She does it, lives it, and effectively embodies it. The Deception legendary should be a shapeshifter, too. If FiM wasn't G-rated, her seductress-esque vibes/role in the S2 finale might've made her Lust lol

the fic that inspired this, it is called Changeling: Gotta Love ‘em All.

Nice! I had a feeling it was. I'm very glad you're using such a similar premise, because I felt like Gotta Love ‘em All didn't fully take advantage of the opportunity to flesh out its premise. No offense to its author Ausbrony, but so far yours seems much better-written!

I'm always interested in changeling as pokemon stories. Hopefully this one gets more than three chapters in.

Will Chrysalis be locked to gen 1 types? Because I always pegged her as a dark/fairy

12213848
That is an accurate song choice to use as a description of Ash's many near-death experiences.

That's gonna be an interesting reunion later down the line.

The first meeting of Ash and Chrysalis will be a Pokemon battle/rematch.

I am liking this story so far, and I now have it in my favorites. Keep up the good work and looking forward to reading the next chapter. 😊

I'm a little unclear on how this whole 'damage system' works. Is it just a Pokemon's attacks that cause another Pokemon to lose energy instead of inflicting injury, or is it any form of damage? Are Pokemon just impervious to lasting damage, and only lose some of their stamina as a cost for getting hit? What If a Pokemon was trying to do something for the specific purpose of causing lasting damage, like breaking another Pokemon's bones or something? Would that damage cripple the Pokemon for weeks/months, or could they just 'long-rest' it off, like they do anything else?

12214159
It's specifically pokemon attacks. Might just be me, but when pokemon battles involve pokemon not just physically attacking each other, but getting set on fire, zapped, frozen, and the like, it's either they are incredibly durable or these moves don't have any last physical impact.

It would also explain how Ash and others have managed to get zapped by Pikachu as much as they have and still be completely alright.

12214163
So basically if a Machoke or something got hold of another Pokemon's leg, and wrenched the limb as hard as possible in the wrong direction until the bones snapped, that Pokemon would stay crippled for however many weeks it took for the bone to fix itself? (I can definitely see a move like that being against the rules in a sanctioned Pokemon League battle.)

I have to do it:
I wanna be the very best
Like no one ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause
I will travel across the land
Searching far and wide
Teach Pokemon to understand
The power that's inside
Pokemon!

I got to wonder if Chrysalis would count as a Mythical or on the lower end of Lengendary pokemon.

12213172

She has long lost trust in others, but that doesn’t mean she can’t gain it back,” Arceus answered. “He has no need for extra protection, but if any human is capable of restoring her ability to trust, it is Ash."

This, for once. Also if she can still shapeshift and assume human form that's one more Responsable smart Adult on his side. And if the rest of the hive is coming too?also a lot of potencially useful Changeling-power.

When it’s revealed, would you mind laying out Chrysalis's move set and maybe her skill and Stats? Also if she is really a mythical or lower legend she ought to have a unique signature move.
