This story is a sequel to As the Raven Flies

Sometimes, friendship can be a trial of endurance.

For Twilight, it's the trial of her friends heaping celebration and attention upon her to make up for several years of missed birthdays.
For Moondancer, it's the trial of rebuilding her friendship with Sunset and ignoring her rising jealousy over Sunset's relationship with Twilight.
For Sunset, it's the trial of conquering her inner demon before it pushes her to do something she can't take back.

Sometimes, trials end in failure.

It's great to see you writting agian Amber! Keeping in theme with the title; the board is set and the pieces have been placed. What will the opening moves be?

okay okay okay I'm so excited aaaaaaaaa

Hi! I remember coming across (I believe) Teahouses a couple months back, and after reading the first chapter (or so) going straight back to the start - and I'm so looking forward to where this goes.

I would say this is probably one of my favourite series on both this site and AO3, and I am both excited and scared to see where this story goes, especially with the mild foreboding that comes from a title such as 'Checkmate in Two', not even including the chess pieces being characters' cutie marks. (Part of me prays there's no deeper meaning to that.)

I adore this prologue already - a slight establishment for the headspace of each character already sets up so much in terms of potential conflict, and I'm eager to see where it goes. (Have I said that yet?)

Otherwise, I'm curious as to who the other journal entry was supposed to be. I assume Lemon Hearts, and I do wonder what her perspective on this would've been/ is.

All that's left to say is that I will be following this closely (my only dilemma was reading instantly or waiting for everything to be released first, but as you can see I kinda failed at that.) and that I absolutely love this series.

Keep up the amazing work Amber + Team!
Lots of love and all the kudos.
(Yes I know that's an archive thing.)

Both of us have continued corresponding with Raven. I suspect even she is feeling the weight of the events of the last year. I wonder who Raven turns to for friendship ? I cannot imagine what it would be like to be Princess Celestia’s right-hoof mare… but I think the position would be very lonely.

It probably is.

What am I going to do?

Would that I know.

And yet, I know something’s brewing beneath the surface. Maybe the surface of all of us. There’s something about this trip for Twilight’s birthday that has me nervous. And I can’t say why.

A storm is brewing.

But what good is a blank page if it’s never used?

She's right.

Cheerilee, you’re not teaching a civics lesson right now. You’re writing in Coco’s lovely journal. Think about yourself, not lesson plans.

I guess Teacher Mode never really turns off.

Moony and Sunny would call that circular logic. They’re probably right. Oh well. Works for me.

I respect it.

The few times she’s slept over after an O&O game runs long… that mare has had some NASTY nightmares.

No kidding. She might need some professional help.

I’m so glad Sunny finally went to see a therapist!

Wait, really? Well damn.

Tomorrow night is going to be great.

Please don't jinx it.

Sunset killing somepony with a dagger! A bucking DAGGER! Blood and everything! And the way she described the hate in Sunset’s eyes… I still shiver at the description.

Jesus. Brutal.

Mental health stuff always takes so much longer than it should.

Aye. Doesn't help that Sunset's probably not being wholly honest.

This was Celestia’s pet project for Sunset and Twilight. I don’t get why they dragged me into this.

I think you have some hangups yourself.

If anypony knows the truth of exactly what leylines are and what monsters exist within them… they are keeping that information confidential.

Which begs the question of why.

Without informing me, one day, he decided to play not with the intent to win, but the goal of continuing a stalemate for as long as possible. I found the game extremely vexing.

Yeah, that does sounds annoying.

If I could only unravel this mystery, it would get me one step closer to understanding the Princess and her goals.

I'm guessing you can't/won't just ask.

When pressed, she becomes cryptic and obtuse.

Never mind, that answers that.

I still wonder if we met an incarnation of Discord that day.

He's not that subtle.

I loathe writing dates lately. Each one reminds me that we have less than two years left.

Then, the status quo will be upended.

And she fears—rightly so—that she might lose her again if Sunset cannot break through the walls that prevent her from forgiving herself.

Someone get a Wizard to cast Forgive Yourself. Or is that a Cleric spell? I forget.

Cadance’s magic could never work. And our version of Twilight Sparkle—because we have no idea where or when the alicorn Twilight Sparkle may be—she couldn’t possibly be ready in time.

Learning you're not the "Prime" Timeline has to do a number on you.

Because without Magic… we have little hope at all.

Ominous. But, accurate.

- Sunset - Completed review re: Legends of Equestria

You have no idea why that's hilarious to me.

Instead, my Little Sun took my warning as a command.

From the highest authority in the land and basically her Mom.

I need to show her just how much I trust her.

Good luck, Celestia.

Bucking blue magic in front of Celestia AGAIN. I can beat this. Just need more sessions. I’m not dumping this on any of my friends. They’ve put up with too much from me. Surprise’s been getting more worried.

Oh, Sunset....

I’m going to be the pony everypony needs me to be. I’m still not sure who that pony is, but I’m going to be her.

That's, a lot of pressure to put on yourself.

Opening Theme for Checkmate in Two:

The RWBY V9 Intro? My my, a person of taste!

Isn't the cutie mark on top of Twilight's chess piece incorrect? I was under the impression that, like in the text, Twilight's cutie mark in this verse is a book held in purple magic. I don't think she uses the purple pointed star iconography at all.

Coco: It’s not okay.

Rara: It’s not okay

Cheerilee: It’ll be okay.

Minuete: I’m gonna make it okay!

Moondancer: It’s really not okay!

Twilight: I can’t verify any substantial details of the nightmare plane I visited other than rumors, and the books that might tell me are guarded by the Princess of the Sun whom I believe is intentionally blocking me from finding them furthering my fear that she has a dangerous grand machination for us and Sunset, but Sunset trusts her implicitly and I can’t tell any of my other friends. Also my birthday party is tomorrow.

Raven: The apocalypse is coming. We’re not ready.

Celestia: I fucked up and need to fix it.

Sunset: I can fix everything!

We are so back.

Huh, what do you know? I do feel a little better after writing this down. Now, I need to make sure Coco doesn’t ever see this or she’ll never let me hear the end of it.

:facehoof: I see Open Mind made some assumptions about what ponies would do after they'd externalized their thoughts.

And now, with Twilight and Surprise as part of our little group, things are bound to get more chaotic. But maybe that’s a good thing. Sometimes a little chaos is what you need to help you see the world differently.

The tricky part there is a little chaos...

Sunset killing somepony with a dagger! A bucking DAGGER! Blood and everything!

Just off the top of my head, I can think of twenty spells a mare of her caliber could cast that would get the job done more quickly and cleanly than just...
Okay, seeing that written out like that reminds me that that wasn't why Twi was upset.

I wonder what it might take for Raven to directly explain what Celestia cannot bring herself to speak. I wonder if she even dares consider such a possibility. Can even the fate of the world forgive such a breach of trust?

I do appreciate the different heading styles. Celestia calling this the Ninth Era raises a number of fascinating questions.

No. I already trust her.
I need to show her just how much I trust her.

Oh. Or maybe Celestia's finally ready to divulge the true depths of what they face. Or at least some more details. As Raven noted, this won't work if they try to force it.
(And, of course, there's the question of what would happen if Celestia ordered Sunset to trauma-dump to her friends...)

Deeply gripping and concerning intro. Looking forward to more.

Note that the queen on the upper-left major chunk of the chessboard is Starlight. The board may represent more than this timeline.

12150507
If you mean the queen in the top-left chunk, that's not Starlight Glimmer, but Moondancer.

12150510
Oh. Whoops. In my defense, one shiny thing and swoosh looks a lot like another.

derpicdn.net/img/2021/8/19/2681639/large.png
Artist's rendition of FoME attempting to parse Skylight Lightverb symbolism.

Pssst, Sunny, here's a secret winning strategy: you can just (metaphorically) eat the pieces while nopony's looking! So, uh, yeah go figure out how eat ponies. Metaphorically.

12150507
Actually the Queen is a special design for Moondancer!

And Twi’s cutie mark being wrong is me and Neon missing that! New version coming soon! (We always forget when we’re working on these together!)

12150481
AGGHHH! (Kermit Flailing Emote) You are absolutely right! Neon and I both forgot! Updated cover will be coming soon!!

Now imagine if they were playing 3-D chess. On the Pony Enterprise.

Ri2

No. I already trust her.
I need to show her just how much I trust her.

It's too fucking late, Celestia. This story's going to end in heartbreak and I blame you and the rest of those smug chucklefucks who masterminded the whole leyline disaster.

Oooh finally a new chapter!

Here, have like and Favourite, i am sure it will be warranted.

Agh, I need to check my fimfic notifications more often!

I'm so very very excited for this!

A good reintroduction to the present state of affairs after such a long time. Despite the absence, you've still got it.

Poisoned Pawns

That's not an ominous title at all.

Latest member? Why can’t I remember who that is?

Huh. That's, ominous.

Sunset wracked her brain, but everything felt a little foggy. Maybe she was coming down with something, like a head cold.

Something's not right.

“I don’t blame you,” Twilight said, rubbing one of her eyes, her smile growing sad. “You told me she was safe. Comfortable. She supported you. She was there for you. But I thought… you were ready for something more.”

What in the world?

“Dammit… what is going on here?” she shouted, but nopony responded.

That's an excellent question.

The figure had just rolled a natural 1.

That's what we in the community call "El Grande Oof".

She sat alone on her throne. Her beautiful multi-colored mane was muted. Her wings hung loosely at her sides. And in her hooves was a simple photograph.

Oh, that's not a good sign.

It had been midnight blue.

Oh. Oh shit.

The alicorn—complete with terrifyingly beautiful regalia of armor and flame—stretched her smoldering wings with an expression of vague annoyance, then rolled her eyes as she peered down her muzzle at the unicorn at her hooves.

Daybreaker?

“I’ve told you this again and again. I’m part of you. No matter what you, your friends, Raven, Celestia, or that damn Open Mind say or do, I am as much of you as your magic. As your cutie mark. As your name.”

Nope, Nightmare Sunset.

“Just stop this!” Sunset managed to look the monster in the eye. “I am not you and you are not me!”

She's your Shadow. Someone get the Investigation Team on this. I'd do it myself, but, I haven't played Persona 4.

“If she’s so powerful, why in Equestria would she need you?”

Because she's tired. Because she wants a successor.

Sunset Shimmer knew by the time she reached the bottom, not even ashes would remain.

Someone play You Will Remember from Danny Phantom.

Sunset's fine. After all, she's seeing a therapist now. Nothing to worry about.

Somehow, I don't believe you. Also, this AND Spectacular Seven on the same day? This IS a good day.

12156308

Also, this AND Spectacular Seven on the same day? This IS a good day.

Yup! We didn’t plan it to go like this, but we’re together right now in person!

If this was any other story, I’d be thinking Nightmare Moon is fucking with Sunset from her prison. But I know this story and I know you. This is all just Sunset’s built up trauma, guilt, self-loathing.

I didn’t think Nightmare Sunset would be so direct with her. Literally tells Sunset what’s wrong. A testament to the fact that, even knowing what the problem is, Sunset will deeply struggle to solve it.

Also, Sunset is right—the nightmare talks too much.

I mean, Surprise being Pinkie as a Pegasus (AND a Wonderbolt) is kinda common.

“But she twists it

“But she twists it to sound as disturbing as possible.”

Probable copy/paste error.

Otherwise lovely chapter, good that they're at trying with their relationship. Sunset isn't doing great, though :(

12162667
Interesting! I definitely wasn’t thinking of “Surprise is Pinkie” while writing this!

“Please, Mind. Please!” Sunset sobbed openly on the couch, any semblances of pride long gone. “You have to have a better solution than just talking through this! I can’t take this! I haven’t slept in months!”

“What would you have me do, Sunset?” the kindly stallion asked.

“Reach into my mind. Rip her out! Amnesia, mental blocks, hypnosis, I don’t know! There must be a spell, a technique, something, anything! Tear her out of my head! Please, before she makes me do something I can never take back!”

She remembered the long pause. The deep intake of breath. The sound of him shifting position in his chair.

“She is your dark reflection, Sunset. No one can destroy her save for you.”

We banter about which one of us has hurt their Sunset more. It terms of physical wounds and supernatural conflicts, I think I win. In terms of real, raw emotional and mental damage that's also incredibly relatable... yeah, you take the cake. I just want to hug her.

“I have a perfectly good door, Surprise.” Sunset rubbed her horn. “Two of them, actually.”

“Doors are for ponies who can’t fly.” Surprise shrugged. “So, you going to open this window the rest of the way, or what?”

"Suck it, grounders!"

Surprise popped her head out of the kitchen as soon as Sunset reached the landing. “Are you out of paprika again?”

“You used it all last week between the dinners and the breakfasts you keep popping by to make.”

Surprise frowned. “I told you to get more, Sunset. Some of us actually use spices when we cook.”

Whistles.

“Nope!” Surprise twisted a wing over Sunset’s muzzle, cutting off her response. “My turn! It means that that angry little pony in your head is a liar. I don’t know what she really is. If it’s some piece of your parents, or some of the trauma you’ve been through or what. Maybe it’s just some piece of you that refuses to let you be happy because you don’t think you’ll ever earn it. All of it is horseapples.

Surprise may not be the pony Sunset wants, but right now, she's proven she's the pony Sunset needs. This is our first time seeing a (real) interaction with them and I adore their relationship 100%. It's soft, it's understanding, and it's wholesome.

The eventual breakup will at least be amicable, but it's still gonna suck.

Great work, Love.

Sunset woke up in a pile of cinders. It wasn’t the first time. She doubted it would be her last.

That's, not a good sign.

Said desk—her third in six months—had been reduced to charcoal in a heap in front of her.

That's one every two months.

Sunset knew better than to keep important, unprotected things around her anymore.

That, is a very sad and telling line.

“She is your dark reflection, Sunset. No one can destroy her save for you.”

"I am thou and thou art I."

The Wonderbolt’s red eyes narrowed.

Red? I thought Surprise had purple eyes?

“He suspects the sheer amount of magic I’ve wielded throughout my life may have altered the way I process thoughts, dreams, nightmares… whatever. That or just my brain works differently.”

Both?

After a few dates, Surprise had confessed to Sunset she was asexual.

Ey! Ace rep!

These are not the traits of a stable pony!”

And yet, you're loved.

Sunset returned the kiss to Surprise’s cheek. Besides hugs and the occasional cuddle, it was all Surprise was comfortable with.

Valid.

She still didn’t get why Surprise put up with the toxic level of crazy in Sunset’s head,

Because you don't take it out on her.

Keep dreaming, Sunny Dearest, said a voice in the darkest shadows of her mind.

I'd ask if she could just not for a few minutes, but then Sunset would be paranoid that it's heralding something worse.

Also, this is the first time we actually get to spend time with Surprise to see who she is! What'cha think?

Well, I'm always game for ace rep, so, yeah, she's pretty cool. A lot more stable than most unicorns.

Hoo boy. Yeah, that’s not good. She's half a step away from leveling a town along with every creature in it.

I had a brief boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with a girl I met at a convention after we met upnwith others over New Years some time ago. It was born mostly from loneliness and curiosity. We tried to make it work, but ultimately she came to the conclusion that she was asexual. She loved being with friends but doing more just did nothing for her emotionally even if her body said yay. It was a sad breakup and we didn't talk for about a year afterwards, but then we met up with others again and restarted our friendship. Sometimes, things don't have to get complicated and we all need a little of that in our lives. Someone who listens and understands we are all a little broken but that's okay.
I like this Surprise. It takes love and courage to stay by someone who lashes out when they don't know how to handle their emotions.

12156320

Also, Sunset is right—the nightmare talks too much.

Inner demons always do.

Im holding out for Sunshim x OTL Princess Twilight tbh

Yeah, I dunno, I need some of this crap to be subverted somehow.

Like, you've successfully built up Celestia as a minor antagonist for me at this point by hammering in constantly how much hurt has been done by her driving a wedge in between Twilight and Sunset. And yes, it IS hurt, it IS negative change, not simply difference.

Because of that I've come to view Celestia's entire *plan* as undesirable by association. I want *something* to break for her. I want *something* to go wrong for the *antagonist.*

Either Sunset not being Magic, or... I don't know. I'd absolutely drop this series if Sunset ends up Magic AND Twilight/Moondancer don't break up AND the otl Twilight doesn't show up until after y1000.

I feel like I've been getting clobbered over the head with "we're hurting Sunset and denying Sunlight so that Sunshim be the element of magic" for two hundred thousand words. Who cares about Nightmare Moon? I just want Raven and Celestia to not get what they want.

IRL that shit can happen, but I'm plenty sick enough of villains winning IRL, I don't need to read fiction about it too.

Fact: I should be grateful that only Minuette regularly abuses Surprise’s name for comedic purposes and not any of the others.

Oh, she's already stressed. Neat.

Wonderwood was a small cafe and indoor minigolf course

*Pointing meme* I know that place!

Her eyes went wide at the sight of the white unicorn and the pink alicorn.

“Shiny!? Cady?!”

Yaay! Best (Canon) couple!

Cadance

Oh right, one of the few things we disagree on. You spell it that way.

And so, the truth comes out. Because I only want the best for Sunset, I do hope she and Cadence make up. But, oof, Sunset that wasn't okay. Neither was Cadence's reaction. I'm sure now, the only thing stopping Sunset from trying to apologize is shame, and maybe just a smidgen of pride.

Celestia was right: kids can be unintentionally cruel to each other. I do like that Sunset didn't hate Cadence off the bat and their relationship soured due to... self-inflicted errors. But, time heals... most wounds.

Twilight blinked so hard she half of Wonderwood Cafe had to have heard her eyelids clack together. “I’m sorry, what?

Gonna steal that one day.

Alright, enough sad topics! We have a birthday to celebrate! Surely, nothing else will go wrong now!

12167675
Raven and Celestia are not villains, and there is more to this author's saga than pandering to your preferred ship.

Twilight Sparkle believed in order, logic, rigorous testing, and proven methodology.

It'd be nice if reality did too.

It was simply the natural order of things.

And yet the universe laughs at the idea of order.

Therefore, new information had to be subject to scrutiny, to ensure methods of handling information remained effective and accurate.

Today’s topic of consideration: birthday parties.

You're such a nerd.

“Surprise—to nopony’s surprise—wanted to surprise you.”

I love this sentence so much.

She had conducted numerous experiments on this very topic.

ScienceHorse.

“What, just like that?”

Just like that.

Such things just… didn’t happen.

In your world.

Fact: my recent forays into chess analogies may turn out to be a hindrance in explaining myself in the future, and reliance upon them may invite further teasing. Re-evaluate their efficacy later..

I love this little nerd so much.

“I still refuse to accept that your special talent is precognition.”

Why?

“I really don’t care for surprises.”

“That’s odd, I thought you liked her.”

Minuette is delightful.

Fact: I will never get used to having another pony’s memories in my head. It’s been nearly a year. And I’ve come up with nothing even remotely credible on why the effect of unified harmony magic hasn't completely dissipated by now!

Shit's weird, BookHorse.

All the designs had that odd, lumpy, silly style. And Twilight found herself smiling at all of it. No, she wasn’t going to beg to take any of the art home to hang on her walls, but the entire place positively glowed with a goofy charm. It was half art-installation, half cozy tavern.

Atmosphere matters.

Her eyes went wide at the sight of the white unicorn and the pink alicorn.

Shining Armor and Cadence.

Not enough for anypony aside from her to perceive it, but enough to make any eyes directed to the couple slide away.

Ah. A Notice-Me-Not spell.

Twilight should have known her brother couldn’t resist a little dig at her. She should have been better prepared. But she wasn’t and she shivered from horn to hoof.

RIP BookHorse.

“Twily, it’s okay.” Cadance’s voice was even more gentle than Twilight remembered. Her smile felt like another hug. “You’re not the only one who gets too busy for too long. I’m delighted to see you. Especially on such a big day.”

Aaaw. This is nice.

“Oh, that’s a long story involving a west deerkin envoy, a grandfather clock, and a poorly-timed chaos surge from the Princess of Love,” Minuette replied with a shrug.

Oh?

“Cadance, come on,” Twilight pleaded. “Things are already strained enough between Sunset and me! I just… want to understand her better!”

Valid, if subtle as a brick.

Something within her craved an answer.

You may not like it.

You ascended! Harmony chose you to be the Alicorn of Love! And you were the first alicorn to appear since Celestia’s sister disappeared over a thousand years ago!

Exactly.

That will not be a problem. Our relationship has become somewhat distant as of late.

Oof.

“The less I tell you about that, the better.” Cadance said with a wave of her hoof. “There are things I can’t tell you, Twilight. There are secrets that should be kept.”

Cadance laughed quietly to herself. “I doubt you’ll believe this, but her first reaction to me was… wonder.”

It is a touch hard to believe.

You see, at some point, word had gotten around about her family.”

Ah.

“The difference was, with my special talent, I could usually feel when ponies were being authentic. Sunset didn’t have that gift. She got hurt. More than a few times. And as time went on, I think those incidents hardened her. Ironically, making her into the very pony her family wanted her to be.”

One day, you and Albi will stop putting SunHorse Jr through The Blender(TM).

“Princess Celestia had forbidden you from speaking about it.” When Twilight said the words, it wasn’t a question.

Aye.

“Maybe a month before Sunset asked me for the first time, Celestia told me about the other students she’d had over the centuries. Students like Sunset. Celestia said sometimes, she received visions about the students who had the potential to become alicorns. Alicorns like me. None of them ever did. Not a single one. I remember the look in her eyes that day, Twilight. It was one of the few days where I’d seen her look old.”

There's so much packed into that. Hell, into that last sentence alone.

You know what this would have done to Sunset and Celestia.”

Nothing good, that's certain.

And then, Cadance’s expression changed into one Twilight had never seen on her face before: anger. No, not just anger.

Fury.

Oh dear.

Cadance’s mouth twisted and Twilight was sure Cadance had yet to forgive Sunset for this.

All cards on the table, I can't say I blame her.

If she had been anypony but Sunset Shimmer, I could have done something horrible that day.”

Jesus...

That I was the only real friend she had in Equestria and how unfair it was that everypony loved me while everypony else just wanted to use her.”

... Fuck, man.

“She said she… all she wanted was to be like me. Maybe if she was an alicorn, she could stop ponies from using her. Escape her family’s shadow. See the world like I did. Then, maybe we could really be sisters.

That's, deeply unfair to everyone involved.

My memory of the end is… fuzzy. Maybe because it was the first time I’d really unleashed my magic? Maybe Raven did something? I’m not sure.”

Huh. Weird.

“Still, you’ve been holding onto this story for a long time, haven’t you?”

Likely for years.

Maybe all she needed was somepony who actually understands Sunset Shimmer, somepony other than Raven or Celestia. Harmony, maybe today was just as much about Cadance as it was supposed to be about me.

In a sense.

She now understood one of the great mysteries of Sunset Shimmer’s life, she had reconnected with her old friend and maybe she had even helped Cadance move forward in working through her own issues with Sunset.

static.wikia.nocookie.net/megamitensei/images/4/41/Persona_5_Sun_Cooperation_ability_Negotiation.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160830083253

Twilight tapped her lips for a moment and shrugged. “Only if they bring food.”

Food IS pretty great.

Sharp-eyed readers may have noticed Cadance's cutie mark on one of the pieces on the cover!

Motherfucker. It is! That's good. Well played.

Twilight blinked so hard she half of Wonderwood Cafe had to have heard her eyelids clack together

missing something.

how much older than twilight IS Sunset? like 10 years or so?

12168235

I worry that Kaizuki is like those types who saw Starlight turning herself around at the sight of actual consequences for her actions as ruining the show, and the only way to save it would have been to outright kill her off in a way we all know Hasbro would never approve of.

12168461
4 years, give or take. Twi's the baby of the bunch.

12168835
Only 4? O.o
Okay, thanks!

12168441

One day, you and Albi will stop putting SunHorse Jr through The Blender(TM).

Perhaps. BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!

There's so much packed into that. Hell, into that last sentence alone.

There really is. Think about it. She's ruled for a thousand years. 1000 years ago was in the Middle Ages for us. I can't help but think that Celestia HAD to have many, many students over the centuries. And there were likely many great heroes and heroines among their ranks. And while we know of no alicorn that ever came forth from this (since Ascension is so mysterious), there is only one who may have had the real potential and that was from the comics.

As for the rest of it... well, that's the fun part.

And yes, Twilight did definitely rank up in her Confidant path with Cadance. Though no comment on which Major Arcana Cadance is (mainly because I have not figured that out since I've only recently gotten into tarot, primarily because of Persona).

12168214

Alright, enough sad topics! We have a birthday to celebrate! Surely, nothing else will go wrong now!

I love you. *says in a delightfully fond voice*

And so Moondancer had been pacing outside Slip 18 for almost thirty minutes, waiting for her marefriend to show up.

She's not having a good time.

It’s like… ugh, she’s scared of what we’ll find.

She is.

Moondancer whirled to see a blue unicorn smirking at her. Beside the blue unicorn stood Moondancer’s marefriend.

Good news, she found you!

’ve never actually teleported—myself or with anypony else—before!”

Which is fascinating, given how canon Twilight can teleport spam.

“Yup, straight from Cloudsdale!” Moondancer crowed a little louder than necessary. “And you have a more personal surprise waiting inside!”

Oh?

Best thing to do is move forward. I’ll talk to Twi about it later and see if she needs help processing things. I just hope she can keep her cool around Sunset.

Here's to hoping.

It was a plushie in the shape of a pony. She had a gray coat and dark ropey hair for both mane and tail. She wore blue shorts with little white polkadots. One of her eyes was purple, the other blue. Moondancer recognized the doll instantly, as Twi had once carried a nearly identical figure around with her, back when they were fillies together.

A Smartypants doll. That's adorable.

Twi spluttered for a few moments before whining, “Because I thought it was… embarrassing!”

High Int, Low Wis. Classic Wizard.

“Twilight?” Moondancer’s voice was as sweet as an entire mouthful of sugar-slathered marshmallow Chirps. “We will discuss this later.”

Oooh, she's in trouble!

Minnie finally lost it. She fell over onto her back, barely able to breathe through the gales of laughter causing her to practically spasm in hysteria.

She's having a great time.

“You act a lot like that Sunset pony, but she said she and Twilight weren’t dating. Why is Twilight dating you if you’re so similar to Sunset?”

That's, a complicated story.

Whispersong let out a boisterous laugh. “Oh, she’ll be gushing about today for weeks.”

It's what she deserves.

Twilight blinked in surprise. “That’s… unexpected.”

She's remarkably fast, when she tries.

This caused both Moondancer and Twilight to cock their eyebrows.

She's barely being hyperbolic.

“Oh! Of course you were!” Twi’s cheeks burned even brighter. “I knew that!”

Adorkable.

Twi went scarlet and her hands flew to her muzzle, suddenly unable to meet anypony’s gaze.

This old lady's incredible.

“You actually put a pocket dimension spell on this?” Twi’s whisper became something approaching awe as she analyzed the spell. “A catalogued pocket dimension spell?”

A Handy Haversack.

So Twi ended up slamming/hugging Moondancer right into the edge of the workbench.

Oh no.

“She’s not the only one.”

Correct.

“I’m not questioning your friendships, Moondancer,” Whispersong replied coolly. “I’m judging Sunset’s friendships.”

Oh dear.

Moondancer closed her eyes, feeling a rage she couldn’t quite explain well up inside of her.

Oooh dear.

“Hey Grandma!” Surprise called as Little Song squealed in glee. “And hey Lil’! Sorry ladies, but it’s time for me to steal these ponies away. Part three of Twilight’s Belated Birthday Bash starts now!”

Oh boy.

The concept is that very powerful unicorns who are dealing with extreme mental health issues (depression, anxiety, etc.) will actually change how they manifest their magic.

That's genuinely fascinating. I love worldbuilding regarding pony magic.

What a wonderful gift for Twilight! Also love the absurdity of "Book Horse Monthly" as the librarian trade publication lol.

Also, I'm glad to see Fluttershy is doing well, even without the Rainboom.

Twi went scarlet and her hands flew to her muzzle

her what now?

we must push past the defenses those we love put up

of who?

Twilight squee is a great sound.

Moondancer confronting Sunset. Bring fireproof body armor.

Risking the Queen

Chess motif is continuing.

Huh. Guess it was a good thing Twilight and I told Coco about Fluttershy. Maybe that night wasn’t all bad.

Good things CAN happen.

When she managed to open her eyes, Surprise was there. In a low voice, the pegasus whispered, “Memory flash?”

This has been going on for a while.

Sunset didn’t believe her for a moment. Whatever just happened to Sunset, Twilight had just experienced her own version of it.

That's ominous.

Open Mind and I just thought these visions were part of me processing through my emotions.

A reasonable assumption. Clearly inaccurate.

Am I making things even worse for Twilight? What if… what if whenever I have a flash, she’s having one too, no matter where she is…

Her self loathing is only making things worse.

“Pegasi are weird. Surprise is extra weird.”

You've never met Pinkie Pie, I take it.

A delighted and demonic cackle echoed through her mind as she felt the monster withdraw.

Boy. The Nightmare Moon situation is only going to make things exponentially worse if this isn't dealt with by then.

“O&O one-shot in three weeks. Saturday. You bring the snacks. Just you, me, Twinkleshine, and Lemon Hearts.”

Sounds fun.

“I’ll clear my schedule that day.” A very faint smile crawled onto her face. “Heck, it might be fun to set Lemon’s character on fire again.”

I'm sure she'll do something to deserve it.

Sunset’s eyes lifted up and for a moment, all the anxiety and depression faded at the landscape before her. Her gaze wandered over the foothills of the Unicorn Range as they stretched out into the distant west before slowly curving north. The day was so clear, she even caught sight of the Smokey Mountains, a tall series of peaks branching off from the rolling green hills. A small town nestled in the plains below Canterlot beside an enormous dark forest. The town of Ponyville, if she wasn’t mistaken. According to Princess Celestia, the small town had been selected to be the host of the Summer Sun Celebration two years from now.

2 more years. A lot can happen in 2 MONTHS.

Surprise gestured to the one with the rainbow mane. “First, allow me to introduce Lieutenant Rainbow Dash, the youngest Wonderbolt on record, and the newest addition to the Wonderbolt’s First Squadron.”

Oh shit, a Wonderbolt already? That's an academy record.

It looked like Twilight had been taking her lessons in friendship to heart, because Sunset didn’t know half of the other ponies in the stadium.

Damn.

The idea of being surrounded by all those ponies gave her a jolt of anxiety.

Big mood.

Are you sure? Just… remove yourself from the picture, Sunny Dearest. How much better would their lives be?

I do not like you.

“Jackie, wasn’t it?” Sunset guessed.

Huh. Interesting.

“Still are,” Jackie said, a little smile on her freckled cheeks. “In fact, things are better than ever. Never met a pony quite like her, though she’s changed so much since our first little rendezvous.”

Huh. More a Flutterdash guy myself, but I can ship it.

“Oh, she’d be the first one to admit that.” Jackie nodded. “Back then, she felt she always had something to prove. I asked her about that once. She told me she’d been like that since she was a filly. Like she’d missed something and she needed to make up for it.”

The Sonic Rainboom. That, and if her parents are anythin like their canon, their constant showering praise upon her probably gave her a complex, not being sure what praise is real and which isn't.

“Do you know what it’s like to have a voice in your head, constantly telling you that everything you’re doing is wrong? No matter how hard you try, no matter how much work you put in, no matter your intentions… that you’ve failed? And you’re going to just keep failing?”

Every day.

Despite the good I’ve done, how I’ve helped my Granny, my brother, and my sister, that if I had just been there myself… things would have gone right.”

Life puts things in a funny order, Jackie.

“Some nights when I toss and turn in my apartment and wish I could turn back the clock. But come morning, I remember why I chose this path. I get to do something I love and help those I love. That’s enough for me.”

That's, that's good.

“And there’s nothing wrong with that. Intent matters, Miss Shimmer. ‘Do the best you can with what you have at the moment.’ Something my Granny Smith used to tell me.”

That's, that's good advice.

“Well get ready to have your horseshoes knocked clean off!” Surprise called. “Because we have something extra special for you today!”

Oh boy.

And apparently everypony knew about it.

Everypony but Sunset.

That's gotta sting.

Instead, she forced herself to gaze in awe as Twilight’s book-and-magic cutie mark appeared in a blaze of light and sound over the Canterlot Cloud Stadium.

Aw, that's SO cool!

I wonder what that feels like?

I wonder if I’ll ever know.

Join the club.

(blame growing up on Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Gladly, that show is (mostly) great.

Even years later, AppleDash is still very much a thing in Wavelengths! Granted, Jackie and Lieutenant Dash are very different ponies than their canon counterparts, but it still works!

I haven't read any AppleDash in what feels like years. Good shit.

AppleDash is fun! More seriously, poor Sunset, you're not doing well at all.

These ponies really need to get it over with and form a polycule :trollestia:

Good to know Apple Bloom has plenty of family to look after her. But, I’m worried about Scootaloo with only her part-time parents and no mentor in her life.

I do not like you.

Neither do I, but I'm just waiting for the day Sunset calls on her with a cry of "PERSONA!!!"

You know, this DOES feel pretty Persona.
