Ah, the perilously blurry line between "I genuinely care for this person" and "I'm obligated to look after this person because I'm afraid of what will happen to them without me and would feel responsible for it." It's not a healthy state of being, but hopefully this can be rock bottom. And the thing about hitting a hard surface is that the object can splatter... or bounce. And if you recall the fics set in their teen years, Sunny is not great with feelings in general (having some parental issues on top of whatever is wrong with Crystal Prep) and she's indeed at least somewhat responsible for whatever went on between Sour Sweet, Sweet Leaf, and Lemon (not that teen Sunny cared, but early 20s Sunny does).
