Having fun by taking silly cartoon ponies way too seriously.

"Anyway, if they were all like her, they would have killed each other off a long time ago."

That's a point that a lot of people writing Always Chaotic Evil races don't think about. Props to D&D drow for explicitly stating that part of Lolth's micromanagement of their culture is keeping this seemingly inevitable failure state from happening.

Oh you

Silly GIFS aside etymology is something of a curiosity of mine so if you were interested I looked into why that phrase came about:

Totally fair! :rainbowwild:

The longer and more tortuous an etymological trail is, the less likely I am to give it credence, but at least two of those are plausible. On the other hoof, I adore T. E. Hook's take on the matter, which may be obvious because I shamelessly stole it! He seems like a wonderful guy and if there was any justice in the universe, he would have been a navel man and risen to the rank of captain!

Hmm...Hook was an interesting fellow to say the least.

Etymology is definitely a bit of a dice roll to be sure.

I am glad that Ralf is still a very good boy :moustache:

I am reminded of something that Cecil Adam once wrote in "The Straight Dope":

Unfortunately, both these explanations, as one historian puts it, "are so plausible that neither can be accepted as correct," plausibility being pretty much a sure sign of error in the etymology business.

If this is what this whole anthology will be like, I’ll be grinning and groaning the whole way through. Looking forward to it.

Oh man, I haven't thought about The Straight Dope in ages! I mean... newspaper columns—yikes! I loved Cecil's snarky tone as he debunked nonsense.

But there seems to be a website now... Thanks for reminding me of this! Gotta go down this rabbit hole, now!

Boo. Booooooo.

I do believe I quite like Mr. Ralf.

Ah, the anthology you'd hinted at. Honestly, didn't expect to see it so soon – I'd figured it would launch with more chapters, or at least a grander one-shot to start it off – but I'm not complaining.

As mentioned, because these kinds of fics are so unsuited for reviewing formally even when they're complete, much less when they're just updating whenever and formed of unconnected stories except for sharing the same world/cast, I'm breaking my usual conventions and just gonna read and comment like I did in the days before Monday Musings. Look forward to that!

Ralf didn't often get a chance to have a sense of humour in Cadenza, between the seriousness of the mission, frantically trying to stop Twi committing Armageddon and accompanying her underground, plus his general work ethic. A warm respect between him and Twilight – not with much direct pathos off Twilight's narration style, granted, but it had some – and the quirky aspects of his personality providing more traditional comedy "above" the action was what we got, and quite well done at that.

One cannot help but wonder sometimes how other species feel among Equestrians here – most on this crew seem at home, but they are typically more equine or have a direct connection to Twi – so a pun from him to conclude this is nice, because it eases the tension there. I'm not much of a fan of feghoots (they’re certainly not something I expect from you), so that was my main takeaway here. Plus, Lucky's exuberance is modulated even better in a context like this than Cadenza. I liked it!

Doubtless few of the rest of these will be such fluffy and light affairs, though I don't think much, on balance, will approach the more sober worldbuilding and darkness of Tales from Twilight Town. You do seem to be gunning for lighter, more fun affairs, though of course I can't predict much off such an uncharacteristic opening. Eager to see what you've got cooked up next!

According to my notes, it'll be at least 68.5%* whimsical and light-hearted. I am not in the habit of feghooting (twice only rises to the level of coincidence) so don't expect much in that direction. Updates will probably be irregular, as this chapter sort of snuck up on me and I wrote it in a couple of hours. The others will be much the same, I suspect.

Out of curiosity, would you recommend this anthology even for people who know nothing about Alicorn Adventure series?

Is it difficult to get what is going on without reading them?

Are there any uhh... important spoilers? (this seems to be a huge series... so not really sure if the answer to this one is obvious or alternatively, if this is even easy to answer in the first place)

Your series caught my attention a bit so I'm wondering if starting with a short story anthology might be a good way of getting into the whole thing.

Well, I think this one probably isn't a good place to start, since it will mostly be set after the fourth book in the series.

But you could try On the Rocks, because it really has the vibe of the whole series. The only things you really need to know is that Twilight and the Mane 6 are going around the East (Zebrica) in disguise as merchants/privateers, cleaning up the pirate problem out there.

Huh. Thanks. I've added it into my read it later library.

Cool! I hope you like it.
