Sunset Shimmer returns to Equestria for a visit after a long stint in the human world, and she’s almost forgotten one of the most frustrating parts of living in Equestria.
Takes place shortly after Princess Twilight's coronation.
Content warning: contains frustrating arithmetic
Edit: thank you all so much for the wonderful response on this fic! After over 9 months dormant on this site, thank you for helping me make this epic comeback a reality!
bad joke, minor spoiler for the story: the pounds shillings pence system for counting money is abbreviated as "Lsd" because the people who invented it were on LSD when they came up with it
now imagine for a moment, if Twilight suddenly recived a letter from some random town, that due to one of its citizens over hearing Sunset talking about dollors and cents (while both were in Canterlot) decided to drop bits and such altogether and would no longer aknowledge em lol.
I liked this story, it was a nice read.
That would be a very interesting and cool premise for a story.
...two mutch maths...brane hirt...
Wow the UK system sucks lmao also more sunset fics fun
I think my brain just melted. Good job!

Yep, it's a good thing we switched to a more understandable system.
Decimalized (NOT DECIMATED! IMPORTANT DISTINCTION!) Flank is good.
I guess that would leave AJ with one imperial Plot then?
I do understand tradition but . .
COME THE FUCK ON!
Gallons, Pints, Ounces (different for liquid and solid).
Stones.
Inches, Feet, Miles.
NONE OF THOSE MAKE SENSE!
Honestly I would rather use the giant rock system lmao: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rai_stones
I am choosing to ignore all of the numbers and instead focus on how cute it is that Dash picked up using "sugarcube" from her wife.
Mmm, yes. Very cute.

I am a bit of a hypocrite in that the architecture/engineering/construction industry in the US still uses customary units, so I am more accustomed to using inches, feet, pounds, miles, yards, BTU, etc. a lot more than metric.
12033085
It's definitely a very stable currency!
12033003
You poor Scots.
12033003
I'm also curious if you or people you know have a memory of the times of pre-decimal currency...? Does anyone miss it?
You're a math genius because I could not do this.
You missed the non-decimalized unit of currency still in use on the UK: The Guinea (ponyfiable as Aris? ), which used to be one pound and one shilling, nowadays £1.05 (or 105p). Still used for livestock auctions (prospective buyers bid and pay X guineas, sellers receive X pounds, the other 5% goes to the auction house) and (according to my English teacher) some super fancy goods.

All measurements are arbitrary , although I do agree that some are far more arbitrary than others (esp. when it's -- nominally -- ~190 against 3{a})
12033176
Despite being officially Metric, many places in South America sell fuel (and I'm assuming engine oil) by the US gallon, and state air conditioning capacity in BTUs instead of Watts. Nevermind that many construction supplies (esp. all kinds of pipes/ducts, sometimes fasteners, and even electrical power cable section/gauge) are in imperial units (inches/inches and tpi/AWG). The silliest (to me) is that in Colombia coffee is sold by the pound instead of by (kilo)grams.
On a worldwide level, screen sizes are always specified in inches (diagonally), copper networking cable is sold in 1000ft boxes (metricalized as 305m), and via/lane widths in electronics designed outside Europe are typically specified in mils (thousandth of an inch).
PS: Barely on-topic video
{a}: The only countries not officially using the metric system are the US, Myanmar, and one other country in Africa or Asia (can't remember if it's Liberia or a country around the Arab peninsula). Even then, all three use the same exact conversions from metric to their customary units (all three use US imperial).
I enjoyed that. That made me smile.
...is it bad that I don't know what a furlong is?
12033192
I was born well after decimalisation, so I can't speak for myself.
As for people I know, it varies. Some people miss the time when it was 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound, but others prefer it being one hundred pennies to the pound.
I read that cash register display as £4, 5s, 8d, fwiw.
12033048
lol cry harder.
HAH! you fool! I simply skipped every part with numvers and just enjoyed the funny story
12033346
Don't try to use your fancy mathematics to muddy the issue!
12033212
We also use mils in the US for thickness of construction membranes like roofing. I didn't know this unit at first though and confused it with millimeters because they look so similar.
I think my brain just drove over all the math and weird words like speed bumps.
Pinkie goes past hitting a Earth car wheel with a stick.
Say Sunset, were the tyres you wanted 235/18/25 or 255/19/15?
Whoever wrote this reminded me the nightmare that is what I call Accountancy 101 from Senior High. I had to retake the subject thrice. And you know why.
12033192
Okay....
I've got the perfect video response for this.
(Slightly different country though, but still British Commonwealth).
"On the 14th of February, 1966!"
Oh, Sunset Shimmer... let's start from the 0:42 mark, shall we? That's where the fun starts
No, I'm not old enough to remember when Australia switched from pounds and shillings to dollars and cents, but my parents had a small ice cream container of the old coins
And some older ones with King George, but all the coins were stolen in a burglary.
Historical note:
The original 50 cent piece was round (as shown in the video). It was also made of 80% silver.
When silver prices rose three years later, that 50 cent coin was worth 58 cents in silver. People started hoarding and smuggling the humble 50 cent piece.
A new dodecagon (12 sided) coin was made, of a nickel alloy.
Yes, I have two of those original 50 cent pieces, and if I sold them to a mint they would give me $20 for each one.
12033689
Yes I have seen that video! Quite a time capsule.
And sorry you lost those coins. They’re probably quite valuable
12033592
Oh, was your accounting class in pounds shillings pence?
I think my brain hurt
12033765
no in peso. for some reason our brought in some international currencies.
I think they would count in base 4
And then the minotaurs showed up with talents, shekels, drachmas and mites.
Then the confusion caused war to break out and F:OE happened... again...
(SEE?!!! MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL!!!) Alondro runs off to live in a cave in the mountains.
Yes on cents. Maybe on Metric.
12033886
I've seen a few authors use that headcanon.
I am 122 years old! Prime of my life!
12034142
But what if unicorns counted in base 5, and pegasi in base 6 (or perhaps base 8, if you believe in “wing-ers”) 👀
i'm just Gunna leave this here and wish you a good day
12034221
Hmm, as pony kind was initially divided, it is conceivable that the tribes had their own number systems. If groups of humans had 12 fingers, I'm sure they would have developed a base 12 system.
Pegasi could have a base 6 system. But I'd think unicorns would share the base 4 system as their number of base appendiges are the same.
Wing-ers? As in wing-fingers? Maybe base 8 is actually more probable. Four characters for a number system is kinda small.
It's a good thing that the French Revolution invented the decimal system. It saved everyone a lot of headaches. Especially since many countries also had the equivalent of half or even a quarter of a penny.
It didn't help that measurements were also different between countries. which would make calculating the cost of something French pounds (weight) to how much it is per English pounds (weight) a nightmare for everyone who doesn't love calculus like Twilight does.
Could be worse, could be using the Harry Potter money system. Their base currency is 1/419th of their largest currency.
Yeah, powers of ten may not always cleanly divide, but they're still far easier to track in most cases.
Lovely bit of awkward readjustment. Thank you for it.
This was a great story! very entertaining and educational, which is always so much fun! Thank you for a bright spot in my day, Mica!
The imperial system? The stupid thing is there are bits that make sense (inch to foot, pence to shilling, yeah I understand why base 12 is useful) shoved into an otherwise incoherent mess...
12036198
Thank you!
Alright, I'm a bit (no pun intended) torn here.
On the one hand (or hoof), the humor was pretty good and it's always a sight to see Sunset "Twilighting".
On the other side, however, I happen to be a FlutterDash shipper, and as such, it's making it difficult for me to add this story to my 'Favorites', regardless of how much part of me wants to. Hope you understand.
Great well-written story either way, though.
12039933
If it makes you feel any better I do ship Flutterdash in Equestria Girls
Calculate tips? I just overpay unless it's terrible service. It works out well. I get remembered at my usual hangouts and they take good care of me.
12039934
Yeah, EQG did seem to be hinting at that nearly as much as it did with Rarijack.
Perhaps I can add this my 'Favorites' after all, along with giving you a 'Follow'.
12040145
Rollercoaster of Friendship more like rollercoaster of shipping amirite
12033212
Genuinely thought you were linking the jan Misali video.
Anyways I forgot to read this story apparently. Oops. Well, I'm glad I eventually did because this is hilarious. I love how even despite this currency system being a proverbial train crash, it somehow makes far too much sense.
Also love the AppleDash I love my useless lesbians.
