The participants are decided by my audience's nominations.

Early on in the year when I'm planning things out, I put out a journal allowing submissions for nominations, then after taking all the top voted characters, I put out another journal asking for votes to give a character a positive or negative score.

That's what all the numbers on each of the elimination chapters mean. Anyone who ends up with a negative score will have an elimination chapter. It typically goes in order from lowest to highest but for narrative purposes I sometimes make exceptions.
