Estee

On the Sliding Scale Of Cynicism Vs. Idealism, I like to think of myself as being idyllically cynical. (Patreon, Ko-Fi.)

E

The perfect place for Rainbow to practice her stunts is obviously wherever the conditions are right, and the fact that she set up those ideal conditions directly over the cottage? That lets a friend serve as an appreciative audience. The fact that Fluttershy's trying to conduct repairs on part of the sod roof shouldn't mean anything more than 'It's keeping her from spotting the damage to the grounds which came from the last attempt'.

Because sometimes practice goes wrong. This time, the fallout from that last failed spiral left Rainbow partially embedded in the sod, and there's all sorts of reasons why she can't just get herself out. But it won't be a problem for long -- not once her friends get involved. You'd think that the diversity of talents, intellects, and magic represented by the Bearers could solve this in an instant!

You'd really like to think that.

This sounds like a fun story. I’ll have to give it a read tomorrow. Its time for me to go to bed.

This would have made for a good episode or short. Maybe a fan-made comic/animation.

"We could have invited the whole town," the little dragon stated. "With extra cameras."

Silence.

"...oh," the weather coordinator softly Fluttershied.

"Yeah," Spike said. "Worse."

Hey, they'd have birthed a whole new meme for fillies and colts to fawn over for a time. Whether a pegasus in a nest outclasses a creepy horse head...depends on mileage.

Cackled all the way through it, but Spike showing up with the camera was when it all really came together with a bow tied around. Absolutely glorious.

Rainbow's cluelessness and egomania are so extreme that she's essentially a mostly-tolerable asshole who is, unfortunately, necessary for national security.

In some stories, I think she's already fallen into her "speed" Mark, though not in as severe a case as some others like Barding have fallen.

(One of the hardest things for Rainbow to deal with was nopony truly seeming to appreciate her interests, and that maintained no matter how much she talked about them.)

Actually, that's ALL of them, although Fluttershy is the least pushy about it.

:moustache:

You know the ideal time for perfect conditions?

There’s one cat in town that would appreciate Rainbow’s construction in vapour. Killer has had the permanent spell cast. His pony companion might even be able to limit herself to no more than five snarky comments. Seven, if Rainbow added fountains…

EXPOSITION

it is unclear exactly when this takes place. It references an event in the story "Everypony Writes About The Weather....." so after that.

Rainbow has Takk so after that show episode (S2).

The reason Fluttershy has her cottage and why she has weak techniques is explained in Triptych. (Takes place about a month after episode Magical Mystery Cure. S4 finale).

If this takes place after that, Dash knows why.

:trollestia:

Every group has that one being. This time, like many others, it was Rainbow’s turn. I didn’t get that Fluttershy was bluffing with the nest, because that is a believable name for Corvid’s. Now how long do we think this lesson will stick?

A little read of rainbow humiliation lesson is good for the soul.

If this story ever got a picture, it should be the photo Spike took!

"So the hunger is ignored," the unicorn blissfully continued. "Health becomes something else to neglect. I can recall at least two occasions during which I quite literally worked myself sick. And I lock the Boutique's doors, I do my best to close out all sound, nearly all sights other than inner visions. After feeding my cat, of course. But once that is done... better to close the shop than to risk losing the zone. You understand, I'm sure."

Even creative hyperfocus cannot override the need to care for the pets :)

:duck: Come Precious Scales, We have other uses with the camera...
:moustache: Can I help with the article too?

:twilightoops: Play Colt ? Wut? Spike Rarity!

:moustache: Nice center fold

:rainbowderp: I'm a center fold in Play Colt?

:facehoof: Fashion & Birbs ? ? ?

:moustache::raritywink: A Fabulous article darling

Every group of friends has that one who exists constantly in The Stupid.

...and if you don't know which of your friends that is, it's YOU.

The Nest made me laugh. The pictures will be framed and will decorate everyone's homes in prominent places, like say the dining room...

The other shoe dropped perfectly in this. I should have latched on to the fact that it was all a ruse from Fluttershy earlier than I did (like when I said to myself that Twilight’s magic shouldn’t work that way…), but as it was it was a very satisfying reveal.

I was delighted by this one.

Although it did make me think that, were this an episode, it would have spawned a great number of response fics where Rainbow leaves Ponyville and everyone suffers greatly knowing how unforgivably cruel they were to her.

But me? Delighted.

Turnabout is fair play, Rainbow.

Glorious revenge on the crashing rainbow. I enjoyed this quite a lot.

this reminds me of a silly video on YouTube, i think it was called "everypony is strange", by either "agrolchannel" or "forgalorga", where Rainbow Dash actually made a nest...on top of a cloud.

All this story did for me is remind me how much I despise the Triptych Rainbow Dash. She continues to be a brain dead jerk who learns nothing from her mistakes and is incapable of taking responsibility for her actions. At least the petty revenge her friends inflicted on her was worth a chuckle.

Somewhere under the bluster and the monomania, there's a little filly terrified of admitting she's wrong. If one mistake may be admitted, the Crusader thinks she's never going to be allowed to be right about anything ever again.

But as it turned out, they really did always land on their paws.

:rainbowlaugh:

Ah, vengance on crash-master Rainbow :pinkiehappy:

12001908 I give it a day, maybe two.

Love it, Rainbow Dash being on receiving end of elaborate joke is always good to read.

Okay: is NO ONE ELSE going to admit to doing a double-take when you read the word "In" instead of "On?"

There were commonalities between any given pair of Bearers. Twilight and Rainbow were the scientists.

They are, after all, the most blue members of the group. Though ironically, it isn't the purple one who embodies the blue-red attitude of "Safety is overrated and an explosion is a data point."[/mtg]

"There's a basement --"

The local Fluttershy has refused to comment on whether it contains a Chamber of Extreme Knitting.

Or maybe it is, but nopony laughs because wedding bread is traditional and ponies get really mad when you laugh at their traditions. I'd know.

There's history there. The question is how much is Pinkie's foalhood and how much is missions gone awry.

A fantastic bit of group vengeance, without the hypocritical aftertaste of Mare-Do-Well. Thank you for a delightful read.

Tons of fun for almost everyone! Didn't expect an aside about the late fees, but it's great!

"The previous failures always found that funny."

Ha!
...
Mentioning Applejack early then putting her last! Great!
...
Pinkie's section is so cool for how calm she is!

Blue eyes placidly looked up.

"Sun's moving," Pinkie observed. "It does that."

And then she was quiet again.

...
"But the way I see it right now," the little dragon decided as he raised the camera, focusing on the pegasus who had been placed in the center of the nest, "that's Future Spike's problem."

Nice reference!

Boy, sometimes I forget how much I dislike the kind of person Rainbow Dash is.

Ah, shades of Bob Rivers. Rainbow has an alternate career path.

That would be this one:

Rainbow bein' Rainbow starts at 02:22.

...and a scary Fluttershy starts at 05:43...

I love the technical world building details that you've added in here, especially as the exposition was so light. I found this hilarious, & the reveal at the end was brilliant! While others have complained about your characterization of RD here, I think that you did a great job of giving her not just an internal monologue, but an entire psychology that works-along-with-yet-expands the canon in interesting ways. You also draw connections between them that I'd never really thought about, but seem absolutely obvious when looked at with hindsight. Bravo!

Seems like whenever I see an Estee story that looks like one I'd especially enjoy, half the time they're always Rainbow Dash-centric. I'm sure that says something. :ajsmug:

Oh, and Rainbow? Vengeance is sweet, for everyone except the one receiving it. :trollestia:

I've kinda come back to this story semi frequently over the past few days, and each time I skim over the ending, I only think of one thing:
"Dash is gonna get them all back somehow".
(Probably not in a story, but i'd be lying if I said I didn't want to at least kinda see that)

This story keeps popping into my head, and I've got two more things to say (and hopefully with them out of my system, the story will stop entering mine for a while):
1. I can't help but feel like they definitely took things just a little bit too far, though I'm not sure if that's just because Dash is my favorite of the mane 6
2. I do have to wonder how long they were going to keep her there if she never realized it was a prank. Like, i doubt they were going to let her starve or actually wet herself

Good story. Which the canon concept of a revenge prank to stop the pranking has always been iffy, you did a good job of establishing the problem was Rainbow simply refusing all responsibility. One can't really argue for boundary-setting discussions when the subject compulsively lies or lies-by-omission/absence to prevent any discussion at all.

Honestly, this works as a good replacement for the infamous RD episodes: It lacks the absurd sociopathy demonstrated by Rainbow pranking Fluttershy to tears and replaces it with more canon-fitting irresponsibility and evasion. Meanwhile, the others were just mean enough to drive home the point without Rainbow ever feeling like she was in danger or abandoned.

(One of those Someones, whose whole existence was supposed to be about chaos, was oddly irritated by that.)
