Im intrested in the mention somwehre that the Guards armor only looks gold due to it being best for handling whatver effects with magic were required.
Otherwise given magic etc, Nomex and WHIPOX might be more appropiate, being woven spun glass fibre and woven spun sapphire fibre, the material being tough, flexible, relatively lightweight and with the right weave stab proof and extremely resistant to magical side effects such as acid, poison, corrosion, thermal, electrical etc? Maybe a blend of chain link underlayer and gambeson padding?
