Y'know, it always did struck me as so weird that Chrysalis focused so much of the blame for her overthrowing on Starlight, given how minor a role Starlight really did kind of play in that whole affair. True, she might have gotten the ball rolling by placing the final puzzle piece that made it happen, but it was still Thorax and others who did the actual...y'know...overthrowing part of it all, and even then, Thorax proved there were already the starts of discontent with Chryssi as the ruler even before that, so...
But then it's Chrssyi--she's not exactly known for actually thinking things through.
Well, that's certainly one take on it, Chryssi. Another is that, since your veiwpoint is clearly the odd one out here in now two hives...your stance is the one that's the "failure of basic changeling doctrine." But, you know, that'd also mean admitting that you're wrong and obviously we can't have that. Apparently.
...I feel like I'm going to end up doing a lot of sassing Chrysalis while reading this fic...
Seriously, Chryssi, you make it sound like she's part of some ongoing mastermind face-off with you that's comparable to Captain Kirk vs. Khan, Holmes vs. Moriarty, Aristotle vs. MASHY SPIKE PLATE, and so on...when really all she did was give Thorax a pep talk. Heck, I'm pretty sure Starlight's not even losing all that much sleep over you.
Well, it sounds like the other queens weren't exactly sold on the ideas themselves at the time, so...one does wonder if they've just been conveniently losing Cuculus's meeting invitation in the mail ever since.
Okay, that part's accurate--Starlight would totally do that and would be absolutely unapologetic about it, too.
Anyway, karma always strikes back when you least expect it, doesn't it, Chryssi?
There aren't many stories that explore the concept of a hybrid hive and how it might work.
And Chrysalis, facepalm to you. They treated you so well and you had to go fight the kids. Almost surprised they didn't gift wrap her and drop her off at the gates of Twilight Castle.
Good story!
Please part 2 i need see twilight face and the other about the cuckos chancheling

They’re probably isolated and may not even know Twilight exists. Remember Equestria is a nation where the town of Sonambula knows full well who Daring Do is but has never heard of her book series or AK Yearling. Information distribution is appalling.
Although that was likely before Cozy Glow’s mass magic drain. Cuculus and every other leader of any note anywhere would definitely want to investigate that posthaste to make sure it couldn’t happen a second time.
There’s untapped story potential. Since the magic was being pulled to the point of the ritual its location could probably be triangulated. Celestia and Twilight having to deal with diplomats and spies from all over the world for months afterwards and reassuring them that it was handled and everything is okay.
11986800
If anything, Spike is why she got screwed due to befriending Thorax.
But nope, Starlight gets ALL credit.
I hated that finale so much with how Spike got robbed.
I'm going to be honest, I thought the premise of this story would be a few infiltrators went out and had kids with the ponies they were drawing love from.
This was quite interesting, and I liked it anyway.
Another banger! Didn't even see who wrote this until I finished it. No wonder it was such an immediate hit for me, your stories rock. Will wait for more from you!
Chrysalis will never admit she's wrong. Ever. Good work.
Wonder what Cuculus would think of Thorax? I don't even if her hive "reformed" she'd change how her hive worked, having the drones be more pony like would just make placement easier.
11986800
Can't remember all the details, but I think it's because Starlight was very visibly active for the parts Chrysalis did witness. Coaching Thorax whilst he was being drained was a big Uno-Reverse moment, and the offer of friendship after that was just plain insult added to injury.
Cuculus isn't quite up to speed on world affairs, so handing her off to the ponies would only risk exposing her own hive. Chryssi gets one "Stay out of my turf" warning. The next one won't be so lenient.
11986860
Honestly, Twilight would probably be pretty happy to find out that another hive had figured out a sustainable and equitable solution to their feeding problems. Pharynx is the one who'd be miffed that they didn't have to turn into rainbow reindeer.
11986930
That's because Sombra already called dibs on Spike being his nemesis.
Seriously, though, I don't think Chrysalis should be used as a yardstick for measuring their relative contributions. She just hyper-fixated on Starlight because she was visible at the few crucial moments Chrysalis did witness.
Besides, Spike's ego was already inflated enough with being the Hero of the Crystal Empire. Another title would be unhealthy for him.
11987010
Aww, shucks. Thanks for reading!
11987055

Indeed. As far as she's concerned, reality just keeps warping around her to thwart anything she does. It's totally unfair, and she wants to speak with the manager!
11987084
Yeah, nah. I don't think she'd be very receptive to Thorax's way of life at first. She won't outright forbid her children from sharing love, but she personally would prefer to keep running things her way.
And that was decidedly the icing on the cake.
Explains a lot about Chrysalis, though. If she was already copping her meh-why-should-I-care attitude even all the way back then among her fellow queens, it’s no wonder that she ended up repeatedly failing in her later canon exploits with regard to the ponies she respected even less. The most sophisticated of plans can easily fall apart if you handwave away key details as beneath your notice (WW2 imperial Japan basically wrote a book on that, for just one historical example), and that’s indeed just what we see her do time and again.
I feel like the reason Cuculus is so successful when the other Changeling Queens may or may not be is simply the logistics of empire building.
The meeting of the queens is literally that one boardroom suggestion meme format.
This was well written, and I greatly enjoyed it. The worldbuilding in this one shot was concise, and not overbearing. I noticed two typos:
There appears to be a word missing here.
did
11986800
Except... That was the last one Chryssi was at as well. Either there hasn't been one since then, or they are both ponysona non grata at the Unseely Court. ...which is entirely believeable, given Cuculus getting tossed out on her flank, and Chryssi being Chryssi. I still want to see a sequel with both Cuculus and Thorax at the Unseely Court comparing notes.
Queen Cuculus is the queen who works smarter not harder, her method not only give her unlimited love, but she be completely safe from equestria because they come and see ponies living in friendship with changelings and just offer a welcoming hoof,
Cuculus the changeling version of celestia, who conquers with friendship
11987203
Yep. Worse still, Chrysalis' ego refuses to acknowledge reality when it shoves the details on a handy cheat sheet in her face.
11987299
Logistics, and the management of a population's happiness. Oppression can only go on for so long before the people either revolt or die out.
11987786
Fixed. Thanks for spotting them!
11987827
My headcanon is that there hasn't been one because changelings have been on a serious decline since then, but the idea that they both have been shadowbanned from the court is amusing.
11987998
Indeed. Oppressing ponies is just so tiring, and rather counterproductive for a species whose success is contingent on the happiness of its 'prey'.
11987200
)
That got taken away from Spike in Beginning Of The End(thanks alot, Discord
Thing is, Spike really couldn't get much in show, so the whole thing with the changelings being robbed from him is really something he didn't need.
Given that EVERYTHING changeling stuff went to Starlight despite SPIKE befriended Thorax, its a issue Chryalis is so fixated on Starlight. It rubs it in that Spike got robbed hard.
11987440
Hehe. I was waiting for someone to point that out!
Definitely on the bandwagons of wanting a sequel where Cuculus meets the Mane 6, Starlight, and/or Thorax.
I think this works best as a one shot alone.
11988027
You're welcome.
Legitimately a smart plan by Culculus. It figures that Chrysalis would see it as degrading and beneath her, since it gives changelings the role of family instead of conquerors.
I love the pettiness of the last note, too. Culculus did not forget that jab by Chrysalis, lol.
Delightful work. Seeing a changeling queen actually think is a rare delight, doubly so when she actually thinks in terms of symbiosis. Twilight’s in for a delightful surprise when she contacts this village… assuming there aren’t any misunderstandings that take 22 minutes and/or a few comic issues to sort out.
Thank you for this, and best of luck in the judging.
Speaking personally, like, yeah, it's great as a oneshot, it doesn't demand a sequel, it doesn't strictly need one.
Buuuut I really don't see how one could go wrong. If it doesn't live up to expectations, oh well, we'll always have this one to enjoy anyway.
In other words, I love this goofy little story and I would absolutely adore getting to see more of this hive and its queen. And like, "sequel" is a bit specific, honestly. I just want to see more of this take on buggo-pony integration where they really take the original myths down a wholesome and successful alternate path, doesn't need to happen after Chryssi's visit or whatever.
That all said, it's up to the author. Can't force it, won't try to. Like I said, a sequel or more general entries in this version of the universe isn't really necessary, as this story is fun and satisfying all on its own. I just personally have a crippling addiction to cute beetle-pixie-ponies being cute and wholesome.
11988871
To be fair, she did act the good host and was quite ready to leave it in the past. But then Chrysalis just had to go and attack her and the kids, so out came the cat claws.
11988923
Proper changeling symbioses are my jam. So many possibilities!
Thanks for reading!
11989146
In my opinion? It does. It sorely does. This is way to good, and made too many references to other ponies' reactions to this village to just leave us without a proper sequel about their discovery of this village.
11988027
That's exactly what I thought and prompted my first story, and was the basis of many of my tales since. I really love your take on the idea of living in symbiosis with ponies.
Heh, always love to see a character realize the pointlessness and impracticality of total conquest. Always reminded of a wonderful little exchange on the subject.
"Take over the universe? How childish. Who could possibly want to take over the universe?"
"Exactly. That's what I keep telling people. It's a troublesome place, difficult to administer. And as a piece of real estate, it's worthless, because by definition there'd be no one to sell it to."
Also, yes, you'd need an incredible idiot to attack someone just as ancient as them who's found a way to gain massive amounts of what they gain sustenance and power from. And, as always, Chrysalis is happy to fulfil that particular need. Delightful stuff all round.
nope. I'm pretty sure you're the dumb one. And nice to see Cuculus was willing to forgive but hadn't forgotten Chrysalis's remarks.
9/10 Excellent bit of world-building and I'd love to see Cuculus meet Celestia and the Mane Six in a sequel oneshot.
11989972 I already took over the universe. It's actually pretty easy to rule over! Any time a planet gets antsy, I BLOW IT THE HELL UP.
(Alondro learned at the political science class taught by Lord Freeza... it was super-effective!)
Yes yes, living in harmony and stuff... but still... CHERNGELERNGS!! ERMAHGERD!!! *Alondro descends with giant DDT bombs while blasting "Flight of the Valkyries" through comically huge speakers*
11988923
I would have loved a misunderstanding that took 22 minutes to sort out. The premise of everything being fine and the six showing up not trusting anyone at all because “It’s just like Starlight’s old village! They are all being lied to!” is just too fun.
Makes me debate whether they would let the lie continue, or expose it and hope it doesn’t hurt anyone.
If you say so...
I mean when did Chrysalis ever lie to anyone?
There was also the eye-blinking-noise, correct?
I doubt she will ever admit ist, but part of her is actually proud of them.
Insanely clever, if you ask me.
I bet Chrysalis looks forward to see her expression.
Doesn't sound that bad...
If you are a villain on the brink of victory never say those words. Never.
Cuculus remembered that from the last meeting, didn't she?
Great story!
I enjoyed reading it.
I liked that this fic explores the idea of how another changeling hive could come up with their own solution to feeding on love in a friendly way. I thought the pony twin idea was very cute & creative!
12021090
Heya, thanks for reading. Glad you enjoyed it!
I like Chrissi's attitude here. Her anger and, erm, style, of antagonism is ever so amusing.
11988027
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT!
You feed off love? Spread that shit as hard as you can! It's like, Raising Orphans and Fostering Children should be a full on class specialization of infiltrator. Do you realize how much love there is in an abandoned child?!
It's like Cupid made a species and they screwed it up. "No, guys! Hoof out the flowers and set up the carnivals for dates! We got Hearts and Hooves day coming! Make some chocolate and build a bunch of necking spots! Let's get the love FLOWING!"
It is funny how a creature called a changeling is unwilling to change or adapt. It’s ironic.
I do love this concept though
12120021
Chrysalis just doesn't wanna. It's her birthright!
