More seriously, since he has the knowledge of second world war firearm progression why even go with a "Lee Enfield" style manually operated bolt gun to start with? He could skip all of the "progression" and start with cheaper, faster to produce, and more advanced weaponry of stamped sheet medal design. Cheap tube receiver smgs, higher capacity, more reasonably chambered intermediate assault rifles. And of course gpmgs and lmgs that would also share in these positive attributes.
Besides the upfront time and monetary cost of design and set up. Plus perhaps the push back of such in the political realm. I figure these aches and pains would be worth having a 4 to 5 year head start on your adversaries' own small arm development.

While the detailed working of an automatic gun is not something a lot of people know from the top of their heads, the basic principle of "gases from propellant slams receiver back, feeding new round and re-cocking the gun" on the other hoof is nothing ground-breaking per se (well, in the present times it is not. It's easy to roll your eyes and parrot back something that probably took millions of dosh and years of research in the past).
Just throwing "See how recoil pushes back the cannon/artillery/gun/what-have-you? Why not somehow redirect energy to the receiver or something" to the gun-manufacturing eggheads should get the ball rolling.
