In a twist of fate, Twilight Sparkle never applied to Celestia's school for gifted unicorns. Turning to solitude and study, she fully engrossed herself into the mysteries of the arcane. In her solitary tower at the edge of world, she prided herself in her mastery over magic.
Then one day, she receives a letter from her brother Shining Armor. He is getting married and has requested she be there. Though she hasn't left her tower in years, she decides to make an exception for her brother.
Unfortunately, when she arrives, she finds that things have changed greatly in Equestria. There are three rulers now. Three alicorns of great, dark power.
The first, Daybreaker.
The second, Nightmare Moon.
And the last, Heartache.
Her brother is marrying the last one. A bit of important information that she was not told. (Thanks Shining Armor).
Content to get through the proceedings of the wedding and leave, Twilight tries to make her presence as obscure as possible. It goes about as well as expected.
Things are about to get a lot less lonely, and not in a good way...
Only two chapters in and you already have my full attention, I won't deny that I'm interested in how you plan to develop this AU and how many events unfolded differently from those in the series.

An interesting variant of Twilight. I could definitely see this setup occurring.
Most interested to see how your going to set up the rest of the cast. I would assume that there weren't three, much less one, nightmare alicorns when she left with the wizard.

Previous chapter established she accomplished the impossible and also sent a messenger across a vast distance that took an unknown amount of time and effort.
Is she underestimating herself or you just wanted to cement the fact that she has nothing and has to move forward back to equestria?
I wonder what kind of strange hell scape Equestia's political situation is right now. Daybreaker, Nightmare Moon and Heartache are seemingly tolerating each other.
I would imagine that Equestria is currently a diarchy split between the sun and the moon. It might also be a triarchy with power split between the three alicorns, I would think that Heartache would be too yandere to really care that much about ruling Equetria.
Great story so far. Would love to read more.

In my mind, it's a fun chapter where Twilight wraps up loose ends before she leaves. It helps show character, while showing her loneliness beneath the surface as she eventually decides she is going to take the month to travel there without any shortcuts. Which is a big undertaking for her. Hope this helps.

You forgot the most important reason, which is the fact that there's no way Twilight's ever going back to her neet-bunker at the literal edge of the world by the time she experiences character growth. It's a multiversal constant. The moment Twilight outgrows her home, it violently explodes.

Small niptick: Archmagi is plural. Singular would be Archmagos. Or Archmaga if you want to make it femenine, but I'm gonna guess a Twilight educated on hundreds of years old books wouldn't just change the title to suit something as inconsequential as her gender

This already looks to be a very funny (for us, not Twilight) ride. Can't wait to see what shenanigans an overpowered hermit Sparkle gets up to, especially since she has absolutely NO idea how to interact with people. Her lack of social finesse and etiquette will probably be one of the many wacky aspects of herself which garner the attentions, for good or ill, of the Alicorns.

How many chapters do you roughly plan on devoting to the journey? While it would be interesting to watch Twilight's reactions to the changed world around her, I presume her greatest and most interesting reactions and interactions will probably come from the alicorns, aside from everything else?

This is a good chapter we get some nice setup but the one thing I'd always have to disagree with when it comes up is how changeling magic works and how it's explained in the D&D book and some of the media is it's a physical transformation not technically magical so most magical detection would most likely fail. And the device only measures how much magic you have like in Twilight's example it could look low just because I've been using it all day or I have been casting powerful spells.

Small details the author may have overlooked for the sake of the script. I wonder if this AU follows the same timeline as the show, what happened to Discord? He should be free by now, with all the chaos of Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon.

Oh write whatever you like the story's good and if you need it to be magical can be I'm just a nerd who read too much of the My Little Pony Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook. But because you're trying to make a detailed magic system I thought it would be cool for you to know.

Well, it's a very sad chapter with a sad ending, leaving behind, one might say, almost his native home, his native land. I wonder if Twilight Sparkle will become the fourth nightmarish alicorn in this story?

It might be a story reason for why this did not happen but it seems a little odd as soon as she said her name and sold them the note they did not immediately take her to the wedding assuming Signing Armor was still captain of the guard I am 100% sure that he would have told the other guards to let his sister in if he came. But what's made even weirder and heartbreaker is his obsession with signing armor. See what not already know? He wrote that letter. Being honest this leads me to ask another question I just thought of how in the hell did one of the half of the Fleming flam Brothers even find Twilight.
