I love this heartbreak story,

Rest in peace, argyle starshine, you'll be missed, hoof to heart ❤️💜

Heartbreakingly beautiful.

You never fail to deliver, TCC56. As always.

Best of luck in the contest.

Still don't like G5 but this was a tear jerker. Well done. Hope you win.

Hope you win.

I hope I lose! My end goal in any contest is to put out something good so it forces somebody to write something better and beat me. That way either I get something for writing good or I get to read something amazing. It's a win-win!

Ow, my feelings hurt.
Win or lose, thanks for the story. It is very well written.

Oh, we're starting off strong this year. Wonderful portrayal of a well-earned final reward, and I do appreciate the hint of intrigue in Twilight's complicated vital status. Thank you for this and best of luck in the judging (which I have no say in for Drama, hence my commenting now.)

That was beautiful. :fluttercry:

This had me on the verge of tears.

Phyllis Cloverleaf's quiet smile when he caught her making medical bills 'disappear'

Also, what's this implying?

That as much as Phyllis disagrees with Argyle, she isn't heartless.

Also, what's this implying?

As 11927458 notes, Phyllis isn't a monster. So CanterLogic 'losing' a few medical bills is the sort of thing she could do and a little thing to help somepony in an already bad spot. This is the father of one of her son's best friends, after all.

God damn, that was effective. Sent numerous chills down my spine, and tugged quite a bit at my heartstrings. It's... it's exactly the sort of thing I'd want to be reassured of, if I were ever in Argyle's position. Damn well done.

This story didn't do it for me for some reason. I can't pinpoint why; the writing is fine, Argyle's character is very sweet, it just made me feel kinda hollow? I'm sorry, I wanted to like it, it just feels like there's not enough meat on its bones (which I know is hard when you only have 1000 words, I'm not counting it against you). I wouldn't tell you this if I hadn't decided to comment on any 1k contest stories I read, but I'm contractually obligated, so... yeah. Sorry, it wasn't for me. Best of luck in the competition, though, fellow competitor!

Phyllis Cloverleaf's quiet smile when he caught her making medical bills 'disappear'

My favorite part of the whole excellent story.
I bet these two have an interesting history.

Something in his chest lurched at that, and a thought finally coalesced: Sunny was sad. He had to do something about that!

augh, a devoted dad to the literal end!

"You're… you're Princess Twilight."

And she smiled. It was as beautiful as Argyle had dreamed it would be. "I am. And you are one of the few who remembers my name, Argyle Starshine. It is why we are here together."

and augh love this afterlife for him

"And please. You've studied me enough, Argyle. You of all ponies should know I don't like bowing and scraping. And especially not from a friend."

which is precisely why she deserves the bowing and scraping

Twilight's smile grew. "Of course. Not only because I want everypony to be friends, but because you're you."

aww extra special!

Phyllis Cloverleaf's quiet smile when he caught her making medical bills 'disappear';

love this little detail here it fits so well

"Even in death you are a scholar. I could have asked for no better disciple."

and augh yes that is exactly what he is! a disciple!

And then - Sunny, in the air. Face smiling. New wings and horn aglow with golden light.

"And she will bring hope to the world once more."

and augh i can’t imagine a more meaningful vision to Argyle

And with a smile, he did.

it’s so easy for this kind of premise to be hokey but you really pull it off here with Argyle. his position in the canon as a last believer in the old religion of Harmony who died before seeing his own daughter fulfill his promise makes all this so very meaningful, i loved it! thank you for writing!
