With the Diarchy shattered by his mistress, Lunar Guard Captain Split Second must make an important decision. One that could effect not just himself, but the entirety of Equestria.

A Reflection-Verse story.
With many thanks to my pre-readers, Thesmokingguy and Sir Mediocre.

Maybe I'm dumb, bur what happened there in the end? I get it Split Second (probably) died, but who wielded which sword? It's kinda confusing.

Split Second stole Moonrise, we know nothing of Moonfalls location or fate within this narrative. Merely that without wielding both, Moonrise is ultimately vulnerable to being broken like any other blade.
Moonrise is destroyed by Split Second, the refference to it hitting his already "ruined knee" showing it was him and not Nightmare Moon who is unharmed.

Fine, got it! Thanks!
oof! a powerful alicorn tyrant establishing her reign is not a good thing to be anywhere near
hehe, ponies’ magical cutie mark powers conveniently foretold by their name working like superhero powers is fun
good attempt, but it takes a lot more than that to take down an alicorn
technically true oath, always fun
and closing up the opening line, very cool! the loyalty being to Princess Luna, and not Nightmare Moon, i imagine. though with a broken body and sword still in his grasp, it seemed obvious that this was how he was going to go out, it is very Nightmare Moon to completely overlook standard hero tropes in favor of chewing the scenery as a standard villain of villains. great work, thank you for writing!
Even when a spell with split second is on the stack, triggered abilities can still trigger and face-down creatures can reveal their true forms. And, of course, static abilities like indestructible still apply.
Excellent scene, making very efficient use of the allotted word count. Nightmare Moon’s statement about crushing the Pillars raises some fascinating questions about the ripples this will have elsewhere in the local timeline. I’ve seen climaxes without their stories before, but rarely have I felt as satisfied with the mostly untold story as I do here. Well done. Thank you for it, and congrats on the honorable mention.
Howdy hi!
Beautiful moment in an intriguing alt verse. I adore the moment of struggle split has in this and his final moment to hurt the monster as much as he could. It was a tense, wonderfully written shot within a greater whole. Thanks for the read!
Hello! I read all the stories in this contest that won recognition, so here's a review. Nice world-building and characterisation here. I think the word limit requiring a few details to be skated over made it harder for me to follow, but I'm not very good at that anyway! Still an easy like.
