Other than understanding Sign Language, I wonder what Octavia's qualifications will turn out to be?
Ah, so Sign Language doesn't exist, but like Flutters it's animal-speech, Octavia has a Gift? That would indeed be a job qualification and fully justifies the literary technique of having a less knowledgeable character around so explanations can be inserted into the story smoothly.
Also, I can't figure out what Vinyl was.supposed.to be laughing about? The idea that the noob thinks she can do more than translate?
