I'm normally not a big fan of dark stories, but this wasn't bad. Your premise is interesting, and your prose is mostly good. I will say that there were some pacing issues, as the beginning had too much irrelevant detail, and the end felt much too abrupt. You had some mechanical issues now and then as well, but this wasn't distracting.
