A Changeling is a limb, to be operated by the brain. A Changeling cannot deviate any more than an arm can move on its own.

What's twisty about this is that the premise/description on the story's front page feels like a challenge to the reader, a challenge that is unknowingly taken on by Tibia here. While the idea of a changeling becoming the mask and really falling in love with her target is nothing new, mixing this with the dramatic irony of in-universe memory loss and the reader not forgetting those memories of a genuine relationship is more than a welcome swerve. It also does show off one implication that the queen-mandated memory loss protects against: falling prey to your own prey (though it isn't 100% efficient in this instance).

That, and you leave two things very much to open interpretation: Blue Cross's fate (though it's likely she escaped), and whether that faint memory of the children's book is enough to change Tibia (by the way, that children's book, among other things, is such a good way to help characterize Blue Cross and Tibia). There's hope, at least... that it's a start for Tibia to change.

It's a haunting story, and a good one at that, with a somberly positive note. Thanks for it, str8aura!
