This one was very sad. Well done!
I confess, I don't know too much about the Conversion Bureau verse (says the guy who wrote a fic long ago for a sub-Verse of the TCB), but this makes me remember one much older story about a pony's qualms of sending someone to a bureau, knowing that their old personality will fade away to fit that of a happy pony.
So to see a raging back into humanity—perhaps because of Shining's questioning or because Cadance knows the Shining she used to know will no longer be there once the Barrier hits—is... haunting. So self-assured, and then suddenly, something else comes in. It's sad to see her humanity(?) so suppressed that she doesn't know how to articulate it other than a song (I think it's a real-life song?)

this is a rather loose TCB story, to be fair. I got the idea first and only later added in the references to the Barrier. And really, there is no Conversion Bureau purity- the original story has been long disowned, and every writer makes it their own.
For some reason, despite being a happy song, the chorus always felt very desperate and scream-y to me, like begging. That implanted the idea in the first place, and everything grew from that- even if it makes the scene appear to be a little weird. I tried to communicate that the lyrics are part of the story, and that shes not ACTUALLY singing, but... Eh. I felt it was an important part of the story.

Did the actual TCB author ever finish the original story? With how this fandom has hijacked it and turned it into... whatever you wanna call it now.
Thought I read somewhere the original fic is very different in certain details (ponies not being hell-bent on genocide for one, and probably a few other things.)
