That was a great read and start for a story! I know most artists don't mind having their art used for covers here so long as they're credited. Adding a link to the artist or the specific work helps, but fair use for cover art isn't really bothered with unless money is involved.
Seems the artist probably won't mind, but it's always good to cover your butt, just in case.
