Twilight has been princess of not only friendship, but all of Equestria for at least a year now. She had successfully united all creatures in the name of friendship and harmony. Things are very peaceful in the land.
However, one day, she gets a message explaining that diplomats from another nation are coming to visit them in the hopes of establishing friendly relations. One problem though: Twilight had never even heard of this country until now.
When the diplomats arrive, Twilight and the others aren't sure what to make of them. They're all foxes.

I'm so worried. I've only ran across like 10 fox, kitsune, or similar stories on this site and 100 percent of them have been utter garbage ( like Mary Sue x 10000, bad pacing, or in one case I just didn't like it but I'm sure it was ok. ).

They are fox yokai, or kitsune. They simply appear as foxes to the ponies. They haven't told the ponies that they refer to themselves as kitsune.
