You probably don't know him.

The story of two bats – one a musician; one a candymaker – who meet and fall in love.

A last-minute entry into Bicyclette’s LyraBon Contest.

Chapters (1)
Comments ( 5 )

Sorry for not submitting something more substantial. I didn’t find out about the contest until less than a week before the deadline, and initially, I expected I wouldn’t have time to get anything in. But I was able to quickly put this together – I think I’m required to participate if someone organizes an exhibition of LyraBon stories.

Ri2

Well, I thought it was a cute idea.

That’s because the residents of Chiroptria are bats.

hehe that is what the bat version of Equestria would be called

And yes, I know that in our world, bats that eat fruit aren’t the same species as bats that eat blood. But this is a completely different universe – not everything is exactly the same as ours.

so true, sapient pastel bats are not bound by the biology of the bats in our world!

Bats don’t have magic, so she has to play by plucking the strings with the claw sticking out from the top of her left wing.

it did blow my mind to realize that bat wings are actually their hands! just like how horse hooves are actually fingers, the homology is weird to think about

Oh – Batburg. No, that isn’t a mistake, either. “Burg” can refer to a small town, too. And “Batburg” sounds better than “Batville.”

that is true, that does sound better

Sugre Candi has been living in Batburg for a while, but she hasn’t gotten to know many of the other bats that well, because this is the first time she’s been on her own since leaving her job hunting down snakes and owls for a top-secret organization.

hehe, love this analogue! a lot of things prey on bats

– and a bat whose family grows all of the apples for Batburg.

the one constant in any universe

Lirestre reconnects with one of her old Vampirlot friends and the bearded dragon who lives with her – those two and their friends do all of these heroic things whenever Chiroptria is in danger.

aww, glad that bat-Lyra and bat-Twilight’s friendship turned out better than their pony versions! and Spike being a bearded dragon is a nice touch

“The illustrations wouldn’t look like real bats. These would have big, cute eyes and friendly personalities. They’d remind readers of their own equinity.”

love the metacommentary! and Lyra being the author of this gives an extra oof to the contrast with how her and Twilight’s friendship turned out

“And here’s the best part,” Lyra said, ignoring the question. “It’s a franchise that encourages shipping! In the real world, bats don’t pair off the way ponies do. They couple with whichever bat is available and willing. So the readers can imagine any of the characters being in a relationship with any other character – all of the combinations are possible.”

love this metacommentary even more because i definitely write the way romance and sexuality work in Equestria as different from how h*mans do it so that i can write my shipping and romance stories the way i want to!

“And that’s the best best part! They’re the exception! Their relationship is so obviously meant to be, and they’re so perfect together, that the readers won’t even consider Lirestre as anything other than Sugre Candi’s wife. It’d be blasphemy!

exactly how i, the reader, feels about LyraBon…

I don’t think there’d be a big audience for a story about, say, Lirestre and Sugre Candi making caramels together and then sitting in the living room to read the newspaper.

oof, burn on slice of life writers!

“You’re not helping your case. Third and finally,” Bon Bon said, “when would you find the time to write these? You’d have to either spend less time writing music or spend less time with me, and I can’t imagine you choosing either of those options.”

nooooo i don’t want to consider the time i spend on fanfic as part of a tradeoff against the other things i could be doing with my finite time on earth noooooo

“If you ask me, Sugre Candi is extremely stimulating.”

“And I already said that I don’t want those kinds of stories published.”

ahahaha i am proud of Lyra for this line

Bon Bon pulled back. “But if you call me by the name of a bloodsucking bat, then I’m going to assume you want me to drain the energy out of you… and not in the fun way.”

given the comments Lyra has been making about “Sugar Candi”, Bon Bon is not doing a great job in making this seem unappealing

Bon Bon lowered her eyelids slightly as one corner of her mouth curled upward. “That’ll earn you the fun way.”

ehehe

i am a sucker for stories where Lyra is a writer in a way that comments on the MLP fandom itself, and i really loved this expression of it! some great stuff here, thank you for writing!

aww, glad that bat-Lyra and bat-Twilight’s friendship turned out better than their pony versions!

I like to think, since Lyra was name-checked in "Amending Fences," that after Twilight's reconciliation with Moondancer, she went back to Ponyville and reconnected with Lyra, too. We just didn't see it because it was drama-free and wouldn't have made for a good 22-minute story.

oof, burn on slice of life writers!

A loving burn from an author who has used that tag on more than half of his stories.

exactly how i, the reader, feels about LyraBon…

That's the only correct way to feel about LyraBon. I tried to imagine Bon Bon in a relationship with any other character, and I failed. She's meant to be with Lyra.

Thank you for organizing the contest and thereby giving me a push to write about Equestria's cutest couple!

I really liked it when the first sentence said "the land we know and call home" instead of "Equestria". A subtle substitution that puts the reader all the more-solidly in Equestria.

OBJECTION!
"-burg" is Germanic; "-ville" is French. "Batville" is therefore objectively cooler than Batburg.
