“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” - Patrick Rothfuss

They say parents shouldn't outlive their children.

For Granny Smith, it's too late for that.

Now she prays she doesn't outlive her grand-daughter, too.

My grandparents outlived their son (my uncle). This hits hard :fluttercry: Hope Applejack will be alright :fluttershysad:

So what are the real numbers for the population you looked up?

Not to worry Granny. Through the miracle of the American health care system we can see your pain away

Granny's response makes me think of a Tolkien quote.

Okay. This is a bit of a weird statistic: infant mortality rates (US) have gone down severely in the past few generations (it was 32 per 1000 in 1950 and is about 1.2 per 1000 today), but medical advancements have also translated to parents living longer - thus giving a higher chance for non-infant children to die from accident or illness.

Specific parents outliving children is tougher to pin down since it's not a common subject (whereas infant mortality is) but the general jist seems to be between 10 and 20 percent, with the rate going up the longer parents live as well as significantly higher numbers in minority groups and the poor.

(The bibliography of this article has a lot of studies to reference, and there's useful studies with similarly dense bibliographies here and here.)

Okay wow! Like wow, wow. This really hit home after losing my father at 6. My grandmother also had to deal with the death of her son far before her time. It’s something I’m grateful not to have experienced and I hope I never do when I eventually have children.

But beyond me—can we talk about how this was written!?! Beautiful. Like I’m so not crying, no I swear I’m not, those tears are from the dust in the air!

I crave more!!! Torture me more with the feels… :fluttercry:

I haven’t read the story yet but I recognize the chapter title- and yessss that’s such a good play

This was an excellent read, I thought you did a great job expressing the tension and fear that Granny Smith and Rarity were feeling. Melancholy but the future yet to happen.

10/10

:moustache: Embrace the suck and keep loading the magazines.
:duck: Never give them the satisfaction
:facehoof: It's a dragon thing
:ajsmug: Win or lose the house always remains taking odds
:derpytongue2: She's only partly dead almost alive
:ajbemused: Call

I don't normally read rated-T stories but this one really touched me. I added it to my bookshelf.

It's so good but uh... Where's the rest of it? You're not telling me that that's it, right? Please give me closure. 🥺

Wow... this one went over like a lead balloon.:twilightoops: You know I was thinking of using Garth Brooks for this one. In the gamble of cnycism and optimism, always vote on black folks

So is Granny Smith Christian or Jewish or what?

She worships the Ever Lasting Gobstopper:pinkiecrazy:

Personally though I think ponies are Deists if anything. As far as worshipping alicorns...

Why not?

Because Celestia

11300698 Have you considered not using someone else’s comment thread as a stage for performance art

11300758
Eh, fair enough. Later mate

11300698
Huh, I apparently really need to catch up on hell of a boss and associated sundry series

11300896
Eh... well, DWK abandoned the series and goes under the channel Absolute Unit, and Bojack is more comment and meme fodder then something one watches. Sort of like Beavis and Butthead.

And author, if you're reading this, the stories fine. Not bad, but not exactly Past Sins or Fallout Equestria tier. Keep at it

11300899
I was referencing the hell of a Boss video sorry I'm using voice to text. I know dwk metamorphosized not going to lie he's still funny but it just doesn't hit the same with the non Pony stuff but I'm glad he's happy that's most important anyway as far as your note to the author I think it's a bit odd to compare 100,000 word epics to this short one shot. The admittedly it would be hard to pick what some of the best short one shots in the fandom are. Fuck if I know they're so fucking many of them Jeez this fandom writes a lot it's pretty amazing really

I agree that this story is not dogshit.

11300912 Looking back on DWK, it’s amazing that his videos focused so heavily on how depressed he was that he couldn’t fuck Rarity. There’s definitely an edge to TLR that makes it harder to sit through all these years after he gave it up.

I tried perusing some of his newest content, and a lot of it is like, “why it isn’t lame to be in love with an anime girl” and various things that uh. Don’t indicate he’s progressed all that much in his personal life, regardless of his pivot away from pony.

This is the second time today I'm referencing my best My Little Pony lyrics, my hotel California parody "dying brony fandom", except this time I'm referencing the original ending lines (since my version doesn't apply since he clearly is not back for G5) of the eagles version, alluding to how regardless of where you manage to wind up in life, you can never escape yourself and demons:

"You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!"

Shameless self promotion since I'm really legitimately super fucking proud of this: sorry for hijacking this story thread author. Posh is pretty cool I hope you know that.:

Such a bittersweet story. Is AJ ok? :fluttercry:

I really wanna know how this ends and if rainbow dash confesses and feelings.
