Twilight's student interrupts her court with a nagging question. "Where do ponies go when they die?"  Every pony knows the answer, but is it right, and why hasn't she thought about it before?

"Oh Twilight," said Celestia, her face drooping. "You won't have to worry about that for a long, long time, and you'll make..."

:twilightangry2: Why is it every time I bring up the afterlife, that's the reason you think why?!

:trollestia:...

:facehoof: Right. Dumb question.

Couldn't resist lol 😁 😜.

My theories about what comes after death is:
1.The souls is cleansed of all memories and sins, then put into the still developing body of a baby in the womb
2.Nothing, a soul doesn't exist and when you die all that's left is a slowly decaying corpse

Well, you may enjoy the story that comes off of this story. "...Is an answer" will follow what happens to pony society when they know what happens. And as the spoiler from the author's note says... It is pretty much your choice number one. Pony souls reincarnate in a nearby developing fetus. Knowing this though sends many ripples through pony society. At any rate I am working on chapter 4 of said follow-up, but they are short chapters.

Oh you've got a chance to totally go Flatliners here. :rainbowlaugh:

" First, nobody wants to see the actual research into what happens when ponies die."

Why you gotta call me nobody?

I will consider making an epilogue with it. It wouldn't make for a great first chapter of the second story and I wanted to keep the first story open-ended. If I do that though, something would need to "give." Also in theory, if I did such an epilogue, there would be less reason to do this in two stories in the first place.

I don't really agree with the ends of the show, but basically, Celestia made a near unstoppable puppet over the course of the series, and is now taking advantage of this fact. Honestly, it's entirely within character.
:moustache: Exploitation

im with Rorschach on this one

"Born from oblivion; bear children, hell-bound as ourselves; go into oblivion."

Without any memories of your past lives, isn't reincarnation functionally equivalent to ceasing to exist?

"What happens to us when we die." That right there is probably the single biggest question people have been asking for eons. God knows it's driven me crazy for years. Personally I like to subscribe to the belief there is something after death, mostly because the idea that we just die and that's it is depressing and frankly just doesn't sound right to me.

Eh, it depends. In some versions of reincarnation you do get flashes of your past life supposedly.

The fact that fate is such an obvious thing in Equestria (like prophesies and cutie marks) at least strongly implies that there is something after death. And Cutie Marks are often tied strongly to a pony's profession in life, implying a sort of supply-and-demand economy to fate.

One thousand years of peace? Not a lot of warrior cutie marks. Industrial revolution going on? Damn, that's a lot of steelworking cutie marks all of a sudden. Marejuana just got legalised? Look mommy, that lady has a bong on her booty! Lol 420blazeit!

That's why the fastest way for a mare to get pregnant is to bone in a cemetery.:pinkiehappy:

I dunno, I'm a little bit like Twilight in that I enjoy learning new stuff. This could be a rather interesting thing to ponder over.

Yeah, I definitely didn't like Celestia's "here's the keys, bye bye" on Twilight.

Yep, I have heard the people calling for it, and I had an interesting idea for how it could work(without making something morbid -- and it makes a lot of sense), and I have started on such a bridge chapter (not calling it an epilogue anymore) between this and the other chapters I wrote for the second story. The odds are looking good that I might just do it as one story and un-complete this. We shall see.

"Don't you want to know the actual answer?" asked Celestia.

Hah, Celestia is still smart.
