I'm probably way older that anypony here, unless you're 70 or older. I was writing fanfiction before I knew what it was called. My license plate says "BRONY." Enough said.

At the First Of Ember, the Black Dragons carried out the Dark Morris.:fluttercry:

Normally I'd make a point to go into at least some detail when I comment on fics like this, but I honestly don't know where to start, let alone what to say exactly...

...except the obvious: Good story. Darn good story.

There are a few segments where the paragraphs aren't properly separated, but besides that grammatical nitpick, this was a lot of fun to read! Assuming I'm reading your userpage correctly, congrats on an entertaining first story!

My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw who the author is.

Mr. Drazen, way back when, far longer than I care to dwell on, I came across your website of Sonic fanfics and comic reviews. I remember how well-thought out and amazing they were, and the fact that there was a 40 or so year old writing about the thing I as a teen was writing. I even wrote you once or twice, trying to get ideas for my own Sonic fics that never really went anywhere. Seeing that you had written something for MLP, involving one of my absolute favorite characters, one I've written several fics for---well, to say that I was excited would be the mother of dragons of all understatements.

This story is just as well thought-out, just as raw and emotive, as the stories I knew you from back in the day. I was struck by the similar concepts I've seen other fan writers work with when it comes to dragons in MLP and what family dynamics (or lack of same) they have. Seeing these echoed here convinces me they're on the right track. The stuff with heartstrings is new to me, though it feels vaguely familiar at the same time. I even wonder if the stuff about Draco and the stars is an homage to the old movie, Dragonheart.

I don't know what else I can say that isn't simply gushing. This is an instant classic for fans of Smolder or MLP dragons in general. Thank you for still writing!

Trinary:

Thanks for the kind words, and hello again. A part of me wondered about the dragon heartstring, especially its use as wand core in the Potterverse, but once I read that J. K. Rowling pretty much made up her wandlore I figured I'd just write about it for myself.

The writers sketched in very little about the lives of dragons; I took the details they did work on (the Molt, the hatching ground) and again felt free to expand on what was left unsaid. For me, Smolder is a likeable and articulate spokesdragon; I was kind of hesitant to steep her in a crisis, but I also came up with the Matriarch who would show her the way. I also wanted her to be a counterpoint to the rogue dragons that fuel the stereotypes of other creatures.

And a part of me wrote this story because I recently turned 70. I'm not falling apart but the story gave me a chance to do some retrospection, some intent looking into the rearview mirror. I don't regret writing fanfiction and I don't intend to let this story be a one-and-done exercise. I do have plans for two more stories, the last one bringing Smolder face-to-face with why she likes the cute and the silly.

Again, thanks.

I wondered if the heartstring was a Potter reference, as the only other mention I could recall of a dragon heartstring was the core of a wand.

Oh wonderful! Even more stories from you with Smolder?! That'd be incredible! I'm a huge fan of the character and she and Ocellus are what helped sell me on the new characters, so I especially liked the little moments they had here. I eagerly await your next installment!

This has to be one of the most humbling posts I've ever received. No way am I in the same league as Chopin, but I hope my story moved you. Thanks.

To tell you the truth, it was used in a video as the end credits: it was made by a YouTuber with the screenname TwelveMan_OP.
