Obsequiosity

E

Originally an entry that placed 6th out of 15 in a Ponychan Fan Fiction Contest.

A little wistful melancholy built around a music box.

Thought I might throw in a link to the Westphalia Waltz; the fiddle tune that echoed in my head as I wrote this.

Thank you!

Truth be told, I'm not much of a writer; I'm a doodler. (If I may be so bold as to plug myself: I keep pictures and comic strips here.) There was a fanfic contest that involved getting folks to draw pictures on a theme ("sweet music") and then pass those pictures along to the writers to write about; I intended to participate only as an artist.

Most of use artists drew little vignettes or comics because although we don't write, we're still storytellers at heart. But one of the artists drew a lovely mysterious music box. It was just pregnant with meaning, yet didn't tie anyone down to a specific interpretation. Half the stories written were based on that picture, and I was compelled to tell a little story about that box as well.

Being of a rural background myself, I have a soft spot for Applejack and her sister's muddled Texas/Arkansas/Tennessee accents by way of Vancouver, once I decided it belonged to one of them, this just kind of wrote itself. (One of my favorite reactions to this was a reader referring to the story as "a bit of southern comfort".) Editing, however, was a different story, and I am told the grammar and abuse of ellipses in this are downright atrocious.

I enjoyed writing it, although I must admit the act was exhausting; you can't vaguely indicate a background shape like you can in a sketch, there has be a word to describe *everything*. I am thrilled that you seem to have enjoyed reading it.

Wow really good story:derpytongue2:

Thanks, it wrote itself on the drive to work on a Friday morning. I spent the day at the office typing an outline into Notepad and hoping people thought I was actually working.

Absolutely beautiful. :ajsleepy:

2170951 Lol I've been doing the same thing for my story (not the one that's already up, I've hit a wall with that one, but a new one) only I'm in my year 12 classes not at work.:derpytongue2::twilightsheepish:

Thank you. I have a soft spot for this story because it wasn't anything I told myself, "I'm going to write today" and came up with, it just kinda showed up in my head after seeing the contest pictures and wouldn't leave me alone until it was written down.
