Forget not that I am a derp.

In early March, Sixes_and_Sevens provided a list of prompts he'd gotten from a writing group at his college. Each day presented two prompts, with the idea being to pick one of them and write at least a hundred words each day.

But why settle for just one when you can bring both together?

Updated daily through April.

Chapters (31)
Comments ( 286 )

If Sunset's dfc, sounds like Sci-Twi's dblk.

yeah, more FoME works

Pinkie paused to take a draw from her mug, which was filled with what she called "punch" and that the narrator refuses to examine in any greater detail.

Pinkie can be a very understanding mare as long as She Is Respected.

Behind the (S)Laughter: A nice reminder of what I think was the very first story of yours I read. That takes me back...

Sunlit Stroll: Needing a piece of demon doesn't necessarily mean the demon can't have it back when you're done. Besides, in most fantasy demons materialize fresh bodies each time they're summoned and have materials to spare.

In their own ways demons are much more cooperative than the woods, which generally do not even listen when you try to tell it something, no matter how important :twilightangry2:

Rakdos!Pinkie is a very interesting Pinkie indeed :pinkiecrazy:

It's uncanny how you're able to just spin the coolest stories from the simplest prompts :raritystarry:

Inside Baseball Alert: With the Rakdos having leaned much harder into their status as entertainment, the Simic and Dimir having been massacred until only the ones with some form of sense remained, and the Gruul having forcibly created a wilderness to govern, the Orzhov are the only ones left standing in the "Worst people on Ravnica" competition. Combine all that with the fact that the half of the guilds I didn't name could more accurately be said to have a few good apples, and you have the reason that Rarity being apparently born into slavery barely phases me at all. Suffice to say that her masters are independently overdue for an unkillable dude with a whip of cords and Gideon is currently unavailable (Ravnica is basically the only plane other than his home one with something resembling a confirmed afterlife, so that isn't quite the comedic understatement you might expect).

Yeah, being divine in Equestria matters about as much as being divine in Exalted. Celestia started getting so consistently worfed that Worf abruptly burst out laughing and never found out why. (Given what the Klingons apparently did to their gods, he would simply nod in recognition if he ever did find out)

Your Adagio is always a ton of fun.

Abruptly mortal Sirens is horrifying, and that's a hill I will die on.

(I'm not criticizing the story, I'm just saying turning an immortal mortal is just as much murder [1] as poisoning a mortal with something that will kill them in a few weeks or months: the fact that they don't die immediately doesn't change the fact that you've drastically shortened their lifespan.)

[1] OK, in this specific case it's accidental death since the Rainbooms didn't know what they were doing - although Sunset's statement that the Sirens were now "normal teenagers(a)" raises suspicions.

(a) Or words to that effect: I'm unsure of the exact phrasing.

Oh, these prompts.

I wonder what the prompt intended to mean by Classic Guild Character.

There's also how Pinkie's audience is all willing and stuff. She built it and hired and stuff and she just made a supply to fill the demand. And she's a good supplier. Possibly even the best of Rakdos. There's way worse out there.

I guess Twilight has no visible Midnight remnants. Either because Sunset's a native, or it takes two transforms to show up in Equestria.

Is Mixed Jigger a reference to anyone?

I wonder if they're only immortal on this side of the mirror, but then again, broken Heartstone is Broken Heartstone.

Artificial Heartstones though. Eh.

Unexpected Adagio, but hey, cool power of legacy!

“I’m sorry for refusing to let you become immortal god-queen of this world.”

Serius question. Would the sirens be worse rulers then ourselves? Because I'm not sure that's true. Maybe the gang should have let them win

What's the card game connection here?

The Mixed Jigger bit was gold. Yeah, that's a surprisingly heavy topic, when you think about it, but honestly it seems like Adagio's taking this about as well as possible.
11200244
Mick Jagger, famous for looking like a lich, and having done allllll the drugs. Also for being the lead singer of the Rolling Stones.

Best case scenario, Mixed Jigger’s recipe for pharmaceutical lichdom works on us and we keep going until our livers-turned-phylacteries give out.”

This genuinely had me rolling :rainbowlaugh: Thank you for the much-needed laughter

"I still can’t believe the historians wiped all trace of that fish cult we had in the 14th century.”

So that's where Lovecraft got his ideas =D

Flood Pants! Also, great Lyra!

Lol using Discord as a source!

...

On a hopefully unrelated note, depictions and records of pukwudgies increase along those same timeframes.

Hopefully!

----

Confused about this: "Evidence suggests that Paleopony As such"

Now I really want to read her autobiography.

Poor, poor bushwoolies :pinkiesad2: I love those little balls of fluff...

Woo! Cartharsis!

Huh, okay, so Thorax lays eggs now. Huh.

----

“Yeah." Pharynx turned back to her. He held back the smirk as she winced. Ponies always hated it when he turned his neck that far.

:rainbowlaugh:

I also assume pronouns mean very little to shapeshifters and Thorax is for all intents and purposes a queen. Whether reproduction falls entirely on his withers or the nuclear families are real basically amounts to "what's best for this specific story?" (Continuity with other stories/chapters count as part of the calculation there).

"Changelings! Please bring more royal jelly and pickles!"

Huh. This sparked surprisingly many thoughts in me. One is that while the common pairing is for Flurry Heart to redeem Cozy Glow, another obvious tack I haven't seen anyone do is to send her to changeling therapy where they can presumably instantly tell if she's being sincere or manipulative at any moment. Chrysalis, notably, could see right through her. But of course didn't care.

Another is that it made me think of my own royal statuary story, Heavy Lies The Head, and how I'd planned to write a sequel to it and this chapter right here almost feels like you snuck in and read my notes, which is doubly weird because I never actually wrote those notes down :rainbowhuh: Of course I got busy with other things and never wrote that sequel. But maybe I should.

All in all, a surprisingly evocative and emotional story for something so brief. Kudos.

When Starlight Glimmer offered friendship to Chrysalis she hesitated and thought about it for a moment. She’s also the one who started to build camaraderie with Tirek and Cozy Glow with her Twilight impression.

She’s shown she’s perfectly capable of empathy and friendship, twice. But on both occasions she made a conscious choice to reject that part of herself as a “pony-like,” weakness.

It makes you wonder if AUs where she’s redeemed are more or less plausible than other villains who haven’t shown any hints of sympathetic qualities, but haven’t violently denounced them either.

“Looking back… you really were an idiot. Or just a grandstander." Pharynx felt his ears fold back reflextively, but even that didn't merit feedback. So he kept going. "What did you even want, Mother? Not love. Definitly not our well-being or safety. You could have had all of that and more if you’d just come back to us."

I think the italics here extend further than intended, though I'm not sure in which direction.

11202113
From what I can see, there was a first set of italics that forgot its closing tag and was then ended by a later usage of italics.

11201946
To be fair, she's one of the villains whose mirror-universe counterpart was indirectly shown. With the other examples also reformed (in later comics, for Sombra himself)...

anything she could say that could her out of it.

I think you accidentally a word.

(Some of the Pillars wondered why the wondrous transport stopped by the abandoned village of unspeakable cultists. The Bearers understood that train stations were like branches of the Apple family; they’d show up anywhere that held still for long enough.)

"Well, there doesn't have to be a reason, once adventurers opened up the fast travel point it just--oh right, you're from before the Open World Design revolution."

Star Swirl is large. He contains multitudes. Every bell is another version of the great wizard that is very nearly - but not quite - incompatible with all the others.

It is much too late to do this in my own stories (although with g5 coming who knows :trixieshiftleft:*) but now I kinda lean towards the idea that Clover is a trans stallion. The one major canonical source that definitely said Clover is a girl was the diary of Celestia and Luna, easily explained by that they wrote it before he came out and transitioned and nopony went back and changed it afterwards. So some historical materials still refer to him as a she, but the ones written later bluntly contradict them without further explanation

*: "Oh hey, my old teacher," Clover the Clever said, face to face with the wizard's painting in the rebuilt lighthouse. "It's hard to believe ponies still remember the old stallion... He'd never let me hear the end of it if he knew."

"There's more," Sunny said excitedly. "Look, it's a reproduction of your old Everfree Castle portrait!"

Clover looked at the painting of himself in his youth and winced. "Ah. Baby pictures... I thought I'd tracked all of those down and burned them. I guess one slipped through."

Bell book and candle ref! Nice!

Sex-changing Clover! Very interesting~! Very useful, too, with all the stories they've been in!

11203093
I figured Clover was gender-fluid and when you're an archmage you can make your body match your mood.

Equestrian railways: feat of redundant engineering or eldritch self-generating entity? Discuss.

Sense? What fun is there in making sense? (And this is where I would put a Discord emoji if Fimfiction's emoji set weren't firmly stuck in the first season. :derpytongue2:)

I wonder what the prompt intended to mean by Classic Guild Character.

This was initially designed for my college's Writer's Guild -- when I decided to post it up, I neglected to change that prompt. It was initially meant to refer to one of our standard meme characters, like "three kids in a trenchcoat" or "Jacob the Lamb (all praise)", but I must say, I quite enjoy this interpretation as well!

So have you actually bothered to think up a scenario where this heist is simpler and faster than just going up to Twilight and saying "A bad guy is after a dangerous artifact and we need the original Charter of Equestria to find it first," or are you leaving that up to the reader's imagination?

Also don't worry Proper this doesn't even register on the scale of some of the screwups Twilight and her friends have been responsible for. Just write her a letter about what you learned and you'll be fine.

National Treasure, what a fun film.

11204108
He doesn't need to, because none of the displayed characters have common sense. Trixie in particular probably just wanted an excuse to steal something that should by all rights be unstealable.

Well, at least this way, he doesn't come off as a massive jerk, so that's a win :twilightsheepish:

OMG I'd watch this if it were an actual episode :pinkiegasp:

I really should respond to some of these comments...

11199296
Pinkie's tastes are best left unexamined. Rakdos!Pinkie doubly so.

11199914
But still a Pinkie. She wants to make everyone smile; it's just that on a world as crowded as Ravnica, she needs to let ponies come to her.

11199950
Rarity's specific circumstances in this continuity are being sold into servitude from birth to pay off her parents' debt. She does get paid, but she has to work off their debt and the cost of her upbringing first. Still, she's working for Teysa Karlov, so it could be a lot worse. And after Kaya runs roughshod over the Syndicate, somepony's got to be there to pick up the pieces... :duck:

11200230
Wherever there are frowns, she'll be there. Wherever there is boredom, she'll be there. Wherever there is candy, she'll be there even quicker! :pinkiehappy:

11203846
Darn, I wish I knew three kids in a trenchcoat were an option. I could have had fun with the Crusaders. Still, I'm pleased with what I got out of this one, and the whole series. Thanks for providing the inspiration!

11199779
The woods have their own opinion on matters and are not easily swayed. There's a reason the member of the Mane Six who kicks trees for a living is the most stubborn of the lot.

11199955
To be fair, it'd be pretty cool if Sunset ever learns how to punch someone so hard, they turn into a duck.

11200236
"Visible" being the operative word. The lingering energies are evenly distributed throughout her body and imperceptible to the naked eye. And she'll need a bit more weirdness to happen to her to get permanent wings.

11200021
It's funny. I don't particularly like the sirens, but I consistently have fun writing them. Adagio has a wonderfully horrible headspace to occupy.

11200022
You're not at all wrong. Adagio is wholly sincere in addressing Sunset as her murderer. But Sunset's formative years were spent admiring, deeply envying, and eventually despising an immortal being. She's less than sympathetic even before taking Adagio's actions into account. (That's not to say she'd gladly render pony Celestia mortal; she just has a jaded attitude towards immortals who view an entire lifespan as crunch time.)

11200244

Artificial Heartstones though. Eh.

This is a lot more complicated than making a synthetic ruby for each siren to wear. It's a bit like making an artificial soul. Even if you could make one, you probably shouldn't.

11200344
The best thing I can say is that Adagio is honest about demanding that all of society be devoted to glorifying her and acting upon her every whim, as opposed to certain other figures who have occupied the world stage in the past and present.

11200376 11200634
The man clearly knows something the rest of us don't...

11200818
Whoops. That sentence got moved to a later paragraph and I must not have deleted all of it.

11201231
There may still be some in some forgotten corner of Equestria... though I admit, the outlook isn't good. Still, Twilight won't let any stone go unturned when it comes to finding new friends.

11201817
Given changeling imitation of holiday traditions, potluck lunches, and other aspects of pony society, this seems like the best way to reconcile Thorax's flashback to the hatching chamber with Ocellus's parents.

11201850
I can neither confirm nor deny any notes existing that you may or may not still remember at this time. :pinkiecrazy:

Also, you raise an interesting point with Pharynx acting as a slightly healthier father figure for Cozy Glow. I may have to bear that one in mind...

11201946
For good or for ill, Chrysalis sticks to her guns.

11202113 11202396
Thanks, guys. I'm doing some last-minute polishing each day as each story goes up, so some stuff flies under my radar.

11203093

Star Swirl is large. He contains multitudes. Every bell is another version of the great wizard that is very nearly - but not quite - incompatible with all the others.

This explains so much and so little. Perfect for the Bearded One.

Trans stallion Clover definitely works, but I like the idea of a unicorn who treats the fluctuating state of their body as just another fond reminder of the old coot.

11203224
This actually sparked a fascinating discussion in Estee's Discord server, where someone hypothesized that Equestria's rail system is much like France's, made with the capital as a central hub to both easily facilitate disaster relief and act as a potent defensive/counter-offensive measure in th event of an invasion.

11204235
In my experience, the best anyone can do with Star Swirl is to justify the jerkishness. That and highlight the consequences of what less jerkishness would cause. Though it is ultimately up to the reader to decide if it's worth it.

Political deniability?

11204290
Another way to square Thorax's hatching scene with Changeling families is that Chrysalis made it a rule that all eggs must be deposited in a central creche so that regardless of parentage she would be the first thing the hatchlings see and imprint on. Enforcing her rule from birth.

11204431
Yeah, one of the variables is "how hard am I stabbing Chrysalis with Hanlon's Razor today?"
