Writing is just pain leaving the spirit...

T

The holidays are meant to be a time of holly jolly fun, spending time with friends and family, and celebrating the magic of friendship. You usually couldn't pay most ponies to take a work shift on Hearth's Warming. Redheart, of course, loves the Hearth's Warming shift. It's her favorite time of year, and she can spend it with the only friends and family she has: her patients.

But this particular Hearth's Warming might be different.

Heartwarming as :yay: and adorable too
Is Cute Puncture still around?

Thank you. I'm still in school, but even as a CNA, this job is exhausting. This has warmed my cold, burnt out heart just a bit.

The humor was perfect, and I could tell that you have experience in this field. That joke about playing cards is going to fly over 90% of the readers here. For those of you that don't work healthcare: this story is extremely accurate. I've seen people with pain tolerances like Tempest's, and others who cry at a hangnail.

Not on the main road, of course. By Princess-decree, a crew of kirin were running up and down the streets, telling ‘Yo mama’ jokes to keep themselves nirik’d up so they could melt the snow and keep a path clear for any ambulance-carts that needed to rush somecreature to the hospital.

Okay, now I need pony Brody Foxx following them and supplying support.

There is a lot I could say about this story (all good things). I'll just say this is a great tribute to your mother, which I think is one of the best compliments I can give.

This was a beautiful story, very good work.

This is really good for a one chapter holiday story.

Yes, so… I waited until exactly midnight to post this, because from where my time zone is, I figured I could maximize eyeballs on it by doing that. And then I… sort of fell asleep before I could message you. :twilightblush:

So. Ah. Happy Jinglemas! Here is your story!!! :pinkiecrazy:

I really want to do a short story all about the EMK’s (Emergency Medical Kirins) now. :rainbowlaugh:

Old nurses never die. They just fade away…

Thank you. Truly.

"Death Takes a Holiday." Season 9, episode 5.

p.s. is that Dorctor Derpy in the image ?

My mom also worked as a nurse for 40 some odd years, and to this very day, she still acts as the go-between whenever I have a doctor's appointment. I seriously don't know what I'm going to do when she's gone.

A very sweet story, and would matchstick by any means be a nod to another famous holiday orphan? If so, that automatically doubles the feels.

In any case, Warm wishes for a Happy Hearth's Warming to both the author and the Nursing staff at Ponyville General.

Reminder that The Little Match Girl isn't actually a Christmas story. It takes place at New Years.

Not on the main road, of course. By Princess-decree, a crew of kirin were running up and down the streets, telling ‘Yo mama’ jokes to keep themselves nirik’d up so they could melt the snow and keep a path clear for any ambulance-carts that needed to rush somecreature to the hospital.

...please, someone make full story out of this.

References to both The Little Matchstick Girl and M.A.S.H. impressive. Kind of reminded me also of an episode of House where alot of the stuff they go through is hilarious medical nonsense, but then there's that one or two cases that almost destroys you. A little sad there wasn't a Dr. House Pony in the story, guess he'd be called Crusty Cane or something.

Still nice story and heartwarming as well as breaking. Nicely done.

Beautiful, comic, and heartbreaking, all at once!

Perfect!

Uh.... lemme just take some notes there...

Good eye on the other references!

That warmed my heart so much. Thank u , And I'm hoping that Nurse Redheart sort kind of adopted the filly

RDT

This is really good. I'm tearing up. Well written.

“There’s Doctor Feel Good,” she said. “She came in a few hours ago. I thought she was sick, but she says she’s feeling alright…”

Heh.

This almost moved me to tears.

What a wonderful story.

Happy Hearth's Warming, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.

And sleep was not far behind Redheart herself. She took a moment to scooch her chair a bit closer again, and after wrapping herself in the hospital blanket she’d brought with her for this little vigil, she laid her head once more beside the little filly and closed her eyes.

Before anything else, however, she let her thoughts wander back to another Hearth’s Warming night. One of snow, and heartache. Of cold, and of warmth.

Of a mare in a nurse’s hat, who told her it would be alright, and got her breakfast for the first time in days.

The last thing Nurse Redheart saw in her mind’s eye as she joined her charge in sleep was that image: Nurse Cute Puncture, with a cup of cocoa, and a warm blanket.

“Happy Hearth’s Warming, Mom,” she said, as sleep finally took her.

Love is a cycle.

At least that way, she wouldn’t have to feel her teeth rattling every time she clocked in to work at Ponyville General.

Well just put the timesheet in with teeth, let it go, push with hoof, take it out with teeth. ^^;;;

What a pure, tender-hearted story. This honestly made my day that little bit better. Awesome to see dispite RedHeart's day, that she is surrounded by people who care.

Here's to Ninjadeadbeard Mum and all the other nurses out there. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Excellent telling of how chaotic the shifts can get in nursing. I work in the lab on night shift so while I don't have the exact same patient encounters I can understand just how bad things can get in a very short time in a hospital setting.

I mean, considering it was a Code Purple, it's entirely plausible that no actual puncturing was involved? That could be good *or* bad, really....

This was beautiful.

God dammit, I didn't expect to be battling my emotions this Christmas... Great story! :fluttercry::twilightsmile:

Hah green I beat you to the commenting punch, get rekted nerd.

Christmas is the best time of year to do battle with emotions. It is both the happiest and most melancholy of holidays!

Improved my mood so much. Thank you for this short, but sweet, story.

She really is an angel.

Because angels do not fly. Sometimes, they run around like madmares trying to fix everything* until they collapse.

*Clocks may or may not be an exception.

Written with an enormous amount of reality in the mix I see.
Fantastic.
Marvelous.
Someone's been cutting onions.

Loved the story, but how comes there are separate emergency rooms for patients? Strange, cause it's usually like one room like that for a queue of patients. I guess Ponyville General just works differently...

Im not crying...... Its liquid pride i tell you!!!

I... don't have many words to say for this one. Partly because many others have already commented their reception of the story, but it's also because I haven't had a fan fic tug my heartstrings like this for some time now. That you managed to reliably put in more comedic stuff on the side and still pull off something this heartwarming is simply more testament to that.

Not much else to say. Thank you a lot for this story, and a wonderful Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to both you and your mother!

This was a nice little story! The comedy was great, and I love the unexpected character development. My only issue with this fic is the second half of the story was completely different from the first half. It still keeps its silliness going in one or two ways, but it becomes more of a drama. You can still write something incredibly heartfelt and throw in a few chuckles. Still, this was a minute issue, and it may be a personal preference. The detail of Redheart changing the time and having to shoo Pinkie Pie out of the room was pretty funny. I just wish you tossed in a few more jokes to make the tone consistent, even if they provided some minor chuckles. Despite that, the second half was a pleasant surprise and made this story worth reading. Have an updoot!

My favorite part was the EMKs!

Had to go and open up a can of Premium High Grade Feels on me didn’t you? So good and funny little incidents to start with. And then the ball drops and real life seems to come back into focus. I’m just glad Match Stick was alive in the end or I would have lost it. Thankfully you made it a bittersweet ending, hard to make hospitals anything else I suppose. Glad I read it anyway. 10/10.

Beautiful little story.

What a great story. :fluttercry:

Welcome to my Holiday shit, dame. I can't not like this story.
With exception of magical hi-jinks it's like something you'd see on an ordinary shift during the holiday.

This was really nice, with a mix of silliness, sadness, and heartwarming moments. The characters were all portrayed well, including the original ones (and the background ones of course).

Outstanding stuff. Great emotional arc and balance of drama and comedy. The personal angle really shone through. And I can’t help but think that Redheart saved Match Stick by changing the clock. If it’s technically not Hearth’s Warming, the narrative trap of the Poor Little Match Girl loses its grip.

In any case, outstanding story. Wish I’d read it months ago.

That's... yessss. Yes. I did that on purpose. Totally.

Totally on purpose. That's me! Mr On-Purpose! :trixieshiftright:
