Love the story all the way, and I very much like the build up of mystery you brought with this along with a good build up, and I like that there is still has some of it with the colt mentioning "Mommy' waiting for them; I wonder if we will hear more of this Mommy and other things she is into. I wonder if we will see a sequel to this.
Normally, I'd nitpick about using "then" instead of "than", but given that babies don't know proper grammar, that can be excused here.
