A sad but plausible story. There are some unspoken implications - especially that Mama Apple was doing something illegal to earn enough money to make ends meet.
It's hard but, really, it was hurting Applebloom to not know the whole truth. She has to know that her family love her; the fact they've never rejected her despite everything is proof of that. As for the rest... I wonder if she'll ever try to find that no-good stallion?

There is an implication, but it's not quite what you picked up. Or at least not what I had in mind.
Let's put it this way: Their parents didn't have a happy relationship, at least towards the end of it... but it takes two to tango. AJ's father might have had a bad temper, but their mother wasn't perfect either.
