This is great. I’m going to get a good grade in horsefic, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve,

Thank you for your entry! We look forward to reading it, and best of luck.

Wow this was intense. Visceral, if you'll pardon the pun. It captures that feeling of an old, lingering fear suddenly rising once more.

So what exactly did Scootaloo do to get a "hiatus"?

I read Rainbow Factory a while back and it's one of the few stories that I can say I regret reading. Nothing wrong with dark stuff but I prefer it when the darkness has a purpose beyond mere b&g shock value.

This one was better because of the mystery elements and the fact that Scootaloo managed to do something about it, hopefully permanently.

In short, Scootaloo hurt a student during a flashback brought on by scent memory.

The scene with the reveal comes right after she re-enters the factory:

“This is what happened at Twilight’s school, isn’t it?” Diamond asked accusingly.

Scootaloo’s breath hitched.

She remembered that, too.

She remembered a cut, deep and bleeding, oozing out those oil-slick rainbows.

The smell overtaking her.

A foal wailing after being struck.

Scootaloo cowering behind her desk.

Starlight’s look of disappointment as she pushed the paperwork across the table to Scootaloo.

Thanks for your comment! But honestly the aim with this piece wasn't to "fix" Rainbow Factory or "do it better" - it's actually one of my favorite fics and holds a warm fuzzy place in my heart for its familiarity. The goal here was to treat the og Rainbow Factory as an urban legend / campfire story in the realm of the show!

Oh, absolutely no worries. Just because I don't particularly care for something is by no means a condemnation of you or your story. Actually, I felt that if there had been just a few pretty minor changes, RF could have been an excellent lens into Equestria's brutal past.

I like the occasional dark story (heck, I read and enjoyed some of the Fallout Equestria stories) I just felt that, in Rainbow Factory, there was just no balance. In FoE, while the landscape is without a doubt brutal and gruesome, Little Pip's constant resolve to do better, and the ending with helping Fluttershy gives it some balance.

Hello! Have a review -- and a favourite. Considering I don't like Rainbow Factory itself as much as you do, it was impressive how this fic gripped me. Maybe the passage of a little time since canon also made it easier for me to accept the slightly more advanced tech you often seem to have in your stories -- but mostly I think it was just that the way you wrote Scoots' relationships with the others was so good. Not surprised this won a contest!

Lost did a reading of this recently

Hi Gabi! Would you believe I just finished listening to it? It turned out absolutely incredible!

I wanted to thank you especially for lending your voice to Rumble. You did a magnificent job - it was a completely perfect performance. I subscribed to your youtube channel to keep up with your readings in the future!

great work, i really enjoyed this!! as someone who was a big rainbow factory fan back in the day, you did the series justice! :)

Took me a few rereads for it to sink in that the buckin cop was the boss the entire time. loved the story and I would love to read a prequel/sequel story to this as well
