Mockingbirb

A pony of mystery in the darkness. Or I forgot to take the lens cap off. (They/them is fine.)

Source

Twilight Sparkle visits Equestria, makes a surprising discovery, and gets shipped by at least two different ponies, including...himself?

(Art used by permission of andoanimalia.)

Is this an AU? Maybe not, if you read all the way to the end. Maybe one pony just happened to be visiting the right place at the right time for whatever reason, maybe doing research.

(You can read this story by itself, but it's 'technically' a sequel to This Story Will Lose the Contest Or Be Disqualified, and That's Ok (The "Add Story Button" Story))

Howdy, hi!

Your fic has been successfully added to the MxM Contest. Thank you for your participation.

Whelp the author note sold it

I'm not sure what I expected, but failure-to-launch MxM Twibriar wasn't it. I'm even more impressed by letting the crack pairing fail than by proposing it in the first place. Some people just aren't ready for that kind of relationship.

A voice that reminded Twilight of her own said, "Good morning! I hope you've recovered from your accidental electrocution when we destroyed Equestria's last computer. I hope that didn't damage your recent memories too severely. And I hope you enjoy the rest of your visit to Equestria!"

oh hey, continuity!

Twilight turned her head. "A little purple horse!" she said. "Oh! You're so adorable!" Twilight blushed. "I hope you don't mind my saying that."

aww, Twilight's pony form is indeed adorable! too bad this isn't my future selfcest contest

"I'm a stallion."

um did Twilight just assume their own gender???

The stallion's eyebrows rose. "Just what do you think he thinks we're going to do?"

a lot of layers of assumption here!

The stallion enthused, "Everything is so cute and adorable! It's like...I don't even know how to describe it. It's amazing!"

that does save on having to do in-character descwork here, very efficient

Twilight's eyes widened in panic. "Twilight...those were...works of imaginative fiction. As in, not real."

#relatable

"My name is Mudbriar. One word, no spaces."

whatever you say, Mud Briar

"And I'd like a celery sandwich. Did you know celery is one of the relatively few vegetables that are often eaten as stalks that are like soft, fleshy sticks? Ponies CALL them sticks, but technically, they aren't really sticks at all: they're just enormous leaf stems! Isn't that crazy?" He laughed a horrific, nasal chortle. "And don't get me started on rhubarb."

you should really write Mud Briar more

"I think we have a very special connection. A connection that isn't based on little things like exactly what kind of creature I am, or who's a pony and who isn't. A connection between our MINDS. A connection so strong it could bridge the gap between universes."

yes, yes, i get it Dusk, you are so special for being "sapiosexual" or whatever!

Dusk squealed in an almost girlish way. "I'm so happy!" He bounced in his chair. "But even though this isn't an OFFICIAL date, I still want to celebrate." Dusk grabbed Mudbriar with both forelegs, pulled him close, and kissed him right on the lips.

aww! well if this is a confirmation that there is no MaudBriar in this universe, you sure are playing to my personal tastes

"Twilight, some stallions just aren't used to another stallion trying to kiss them. From what I've heard about this Mudbriar, maybe no one's ever wanted to kiss him at all."

damn, burn on Mud Briar!

"Maybe it'll be good for Mudbriar, to have learned ponies can want to kiss him. Maybe next time somepony wants to kiss him, he might be able to handle it better."

"The FIRST time was when some dorky, incredibly obnoxious stallion didn't get into a love affair with Twilight Sparkle's interdimensional male duplicate. If he had, it might have interfered with that dorky somepony asking out a certain somepony else, and left them unprepared to help counter an attack on Equestria as a team, years later."

you set up my hopes and then you dash them, very rude. also, what's with the chaste cuddling thing? is that a reference?

Even if this is really, really fun, it's still important research!

well, that certainly was a series of events! though now i am wondering what the Authors' Note originally was. this work did impress me, because i did not expect much out of a story that seems to be written for technical qualification purposes. and a failed DuskBriar happening in such a story is somehow very fitting. and i really enjoyed the smug Twilight on the cover, so thank you!
