Short and nice. Sometimes we need choose between our dreams and friends. Tought choice...

Just a tiny bit unfair of Strawberry to condemn an entire family just because of one (frankly deeply unpleasant, at least as she was written here) Apple cousin, but at the same time, I can understand it, just a bit. A bit traumatizing, frankly. Lowkey interested in how a follow-up would play out, tho, if only because I'm a bit fond of happy endings, and Strawberry and Octavia both deserve one (though it's arguable that Octavia has already gotten hers).

I'm kind of curious as to the mindset of Fiddlesticks, and of her relationship with her sister- naturally, I'd imagine it didn't start out so sour. It'd probably make for a depressing read, but that doesn't necessarily stop me, anyways, and there's merit in these kinds of stories. It'd be interesting to see whether or not she regrets pushing her sister away; and if Octavia misses her family at all (I mean, probably).

For such a short story, it was a very interesting and thoughtful read; well done!

Man, I always liked Fiddlesticks and now after reading this I want to punch her. I mean this entirely as a compliment. I really enjoy the way you're breathing life into these background characters, and I liked that despite the overwhelmingly negative side of Fiddle we're seeing there (as the story is told from Strawberry's point of view) we get that lil' peek into how she really feels when she says:

"Not you. Me. Good ol' Fiddly Twang, always dependable, always discardable.”

It makes me think that she's not as self-centered as she looks here, not all of the time. Maybe this band, and her sister, was where all her selfishness was poured into. Maybe she doesn't know how to say "no" to everypony else, and saves all the no's for her sister. Imbalances like that are really common but I don't see them much in fiction, and I always find them to be interesting. This is her band, her thing, maybe the only thing she feels like she owns and can call the shots in, and maybe she's abusive with her bandmates the same way others are abusive with her outside of it.

Anyway, I loved it. Love how you worked off a throw-away line prompt, and how you focused on background characters, and how the one I'd say is the most recognizable of them (Octavia) wasn't at all the focus. Loved the way the POV narrative is constructed. And love the gut-punch ending too.

It is unfair. And it's also absolutely believable. People make judgement calls and come up with stereotypes this way all the time. I agree it'd be interesting to see a follow up, but building on your comment over here, I'd be personally more interested it being centered on Strawberry and a different Apple character, and make it spin around whether Strawberry can grow to change her mind about Apples or not.

Oh you're right, more focusing on Strawberry and other Apples would make for an interesting story. Heck, you could build up an entire micro-universe based on the interconnected stories between these characters alone. And maybe that other Apple could be Applejack...? Who knows. There's a lot of potential that's been unearthed here; it's great.

P-Please, I need, I need a story where she goes to Octavia ;~;

Oyeesh, Fiddlesticks was a right terror back then wasn't she? Found this story on the sidebar from another story where she was wanting to reconnect, it's never explicitly stated if she did or not, but I am hopeful.

As to her smashing Strawberry's piano, that was uncalled for and while I imagine it was heat of anger (possibly drunk on cider), that doesn't mean that I wouldn't have suggested Strawberry seek official help, what if she had been home when Fiddly came calling?

As someone else commented, I get the feeling that she was using a tough mare act to hide what was really bothering her, anger is easy and fast and potent, other emotions are much harder to get around.

In the show, it seems Strawberry just got defensive after AJ got all hot under the hat about her opinion regarding apples. Honestly though, I can see where she might feel this way. I'm a millennial, I remember when field trips gave out these huge red apples as part of the sack lunch and they were pretty gross as I remember or maybe it's just changed taste buds.
