Triple-Rainbow

"Words don't always have to mean things," - Idiot I idolize.

T

Just as the title says, what would happen if two of the most deceitful ponies around took the place of Applejack and Big Mac?

Can the two older stallions work an “honest” day and be good role models for Applebloom, or will they try to cheat their way to success while avoiding Granny’s eye?

Interesting AU. I'd be very interested in learning more about the brothers' father. Have to wonder if we'll run into a villainous AppleJack and Big Mac ... who are really, really bad at it. :rainbowlaugh: Love that they still have the same personalities. I'll be keeping an eye on this!

Definitely an intriguing AU. Definitely liked the work that went into the characterizations. REALLY got a chuckle out of the stuff about the Flim-Flams' latest tinkering project not working as intended. Which is probably ONE of the reasons Granny Smith doesn't trust attempts to do farmwork by high-tech means (even if she acknowledges their work on the chair and boards). Of course, I DO have to wonder just what DID happen to the Flim-Flams' father that led to Granny adopting the brothers. And here's hoping the brothers aren't TOO bad an influence on Apple Bloom (even if they are probably rather supportive of Bloom's talent with tools and potions). Of course, we also have to wonder what happened to Applejack and Mac. AJ is probably a savvier businessmare from being raised in Manehattan and getting helpful pointers from a few of her aunt and uncle's big business friends, but we don't know that for certain. Plus, that doesn't tell us what Mac has been up to even in the chance the guess is right on AJ. And, of course, during that Summer Sun Celebration, I could see at least one of the Flim-Flams trying to pour on the charm with Twilight. And seeing the Flim-Flams' first meeting with Trixie might be entertaining (could certainly see at least one of the brothers developing at least a small crush on her and trying to use some of their gadgets to impress her)

Anyway, certainly looking forward to more of this. And I hope you and your family and friends have a Happy Fourth of July.

Are we going to see Applejack and Big Mac as antagonists in this story?

Another really good chapter. Definitely appreciated the added detail concerning how the Flim-Flams ended up in Granny's care. As well as the brothers discussing the difficulty in getting enough apples to meet their quota with just the two of them without technological assistance AND why they aren't going to Pinkie, Rarity or Vinyl for help. Also really liked the dialogue with Apple Bloom.

At any rate, the exchanges, characterizations and future chapter set-up are all well done and I will definitely be looking forward to more of this.

If so, hopefully not worse than Hero Antagonists (i.e. giving the brothers a hard time, but only because they honestly want to see their foster brothers learn to rise above it and learn to work both smart AND hard and still perfectly willing to help if it is absolutely necessary). It wouldn't be hard to visualize Mac becoming a tough but honest law-stallion as well as Applejack as a savvy but ethical businessmare.

Not in a million years. I hate those con ponies.

Poor dudes, they're working as hard as they may, but two unicorns just can't match two earth ponies for sheer physicality.

Ironic thing is, so far as unicorns go, they're fairly powerful really. They weren't even sweating keeping that Cider Squeezy going in canon, they could probably harvest the orchards without too much issue if they could just use TK. Truth be told, honesty's probably what they need right now, sit down with Granny and tell her plainly that they can't get the work done the way it needs to be done just by hoof-work. They're unicorns, just can't be done, they gotta figure something out.

All in all, a very interesting idea, I hope to see more of this!

Well, Granny, maybe if you'd stop being stubborn and actually let them use their talents...

Aw, they're good brothers to Apple Bloom.

Another really good job on the exchanges, characterizations and future chapter set-up. Really liked seeing the Flim-Flams exploring possible solutions to their machine's short-comings (including the bit about wanting to save getting on Fluttershy's bad side as a last resort) as well as the dialogue with Apple Bloom concerning school (and this is obviously before she met Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, though this might be what LEADS to her first meeting with them in this universe). And, yeah, sounds like Bulk was a bit of a bully in his younger days. Of course, the difficulty in making friends is probably something they will be able to relate to when it comes to Twilight in a few days. And, also really liked the point about them shortening the name of their machine (yes, Squeezer One DOES sound better). And, yeah, having to talk to Spoiled Rich because of the playground project? Yeeesh. Hopefully SOME good will come out of that (such as the possibility of Diamond reforming much sooner than in canon after seeing how much humiliation her mother takes because of her jerkish behavior). Glad they ARE at least trying to be good big brothers to Apple Bloom.

And, of course, the possibility of Applejack and Mac ALSO dropping in for a visit and seeing how they react to this universe's versions of the Flim Flams could be entertaining too.

At any rate, certainly looking forward to more of this.

Again, the exchanges, characterizations, humor and future chapter set-up are pretty well done. Definitely liked the Flim Flams' dialogue with Berry (and, to think, I actually thought they meant not wanting to have to talk to Spoiled Rich [which would also be understandable; not that many sane individuals would want to be around HER any longer than absolutely necessary]). As well as the discussion of what needed replacing and what could make do with simple upgrades. And the discussion of WHY the playground was in such bad shape to begin with was fairly funny AND I respected the descriptions of how tired the brothers were after they got done with their repairs/renovations.

VERY much looking forward to more of this.

Ah, sneaky and covert playground refurbishment! A dastardly plot if ever I've seen one. And Berry will make for quite the distraction, no?

For sure, nobody can accuse them of slacking, it's quite a work ethic they're displaying.

Again, a great job on the exchanges, characterizations and future chapter set-up. Definitely liked the Flim-Flams cleaning themselves up to minimize the evidence of their side project before preparing breakfast for Granny and Bloom. The dialogue concerning the only slightly bruised apples made sense too as well as the plan to use the machine to finish making the cider while Granny was walking Apple Bloom to school. And Granny, it is sweet that you think that highly of the boys, but you underestimate how much of a positive influence you have on them.

Anyway, certainly looking forward to more of this.

I love how much attention is being given to both perspectives here, Granny has a good reason for her position, and the brothers do as well. I appreciate how Flim and Flam's motivations are being grounded, they're not trying to get rich quick, they're trying to break even after exhausting the usual options.

The world was a mean place, it ate up bright eyed ponies like them and spat ‘em out sometimes. It’s why she liked tradition. It was safe, reliable, and it always worked. No need to fix something that wouldn’t break anytime soon. It was safer that way.

While Granny's heart is in the right place, her thought process is, unintentionally, not.

Has she never considered the possibility that her traditions seemed to be for/favor Earth Ponies?

In fact, was she even aware that her boys where bullied in the past for being Unicorns that where born into an Earth Pony Family?

I'm kinda wondering if Dash'll make an appearance or be mentioned in a later chapter. The boys already stated they've helped both Pinkie and Rarity repair something of there's and have said that they've borrowed some animals from Flutters.

Dangit Pinkie, why today of all days?

Aw man, dot's a hard thing and no mistake, all the more so in that it worked perfectly up until that point, just as intended and planned. In the future, they need to start incorporating emergency shutdown measures.

On the other hand, greatly enjoyed Flam's banter with Carrot, good to see him exercise that showpony side of his talent.

OUCH. Not much I can say other than great job on the exchanges, characterizations, humor, action and future chapter set-up. Definitely appreciated the dialogue between Flam and Carrot Top, but yikes. Unfortunately, the boys' plan to get the power for their machine worked TOO WELL. They were only planning on having a bunch of foals unknowing (and painlessly) providing the power. The fatal flaw in their plan was that Pinkie Pie got into playing with the playground equipment (and, with the exceptions of Cheese Sandwich and Discord [the latter of whom won't be returning for several months] Pinkie has more energy than literally anybody else in Equestria). The result: the brothers' machine ended up doing considerable damage to the farm. And Granny probably won't ACTUALLY kill them, but she WILL provide such a stern lecture that Flim and Flam might be briefly wishing they were dead. At the very least, it's going to take several days to repair the damage that this stunt caused. It's definitely going to give Twilight the wrong idea when she eventually arrives.

Of course, I still have to wonder if Applejack is a multi-millionairess raised by the Oranges and trained by several businessponies in Manehattan and Mac a tough, but honest cop operating in some big city or another. Might make for an entertaining Compare and contrast.

Anyway, definitely looking forward to more of this.

Ah damn it it ended on a cliffhanger! This is so interesting and a fun take! I must know what happens!
