While Daring Do is busy stopping Ahuizotl from doing whatever it is he's trying this time, Dr. Caballeron decides it's the perfect time to go treasure hunting. With his greatest foe distracted, nothing can stop him!

Tempest Shadow was broken. She'd been a magical prodigy, she'd had friends, she'd been happy. Then one day she'd lost it all. Now she was scouring the world for anything that could return what she had lost.

This is written for the May 2021 Pairing Contest. This time I chose two I wanted to meet, but never had before. This story takes place before Daring Don't. It is rather ambiguous, but I imagine it occurs before Nightmare Moon's return.

I never intended this story to be that sad, but I think it fits well with how she is next time we see her.

Especially if she realizes that there was a simple way she could have gotten the flower:

Oh she tried. It's not as though he stood there waiting for her. Plus, her aim is not that great.

I like the idea of this pairing. The set-up of the two characters both seeking a mystical item for their own reasons is solid. The idea of Dr. Cabelleron being a bad influence on Tempest is interesting. The action scenes are written well. I enjoyed the ending. It was a fun read!

I really hope some more people find this one.

I decided that I wanted to write a story about Zecora and Ahuizotl crossing paths in the jungle, since we know both of them like to live in untamed wildlands, so it would be natural for them to meet. Then I saw that others had thought of that, so I looked for a similar pair. I tried Daring Do as well, but Zecora had been with all three, so I turned my sights to find another pony who spent a lot of time out of Equestria. When that happened Tempest was an easy choice.
Tempest was looking for a magic artifact to heal her horn in the movie, so I thought 'why does that have to be her first attempt?' And we know Dr. Caballeron hunts such treasures. Then I just had to make sure that his normal rivals and associates stayed away. A few words about how Daring and Ahuizotl were busy with each other and have the good Dr. get lost and the stage was set.
I don't know if I got this across properly, but the Doctor actually came to realize that he had to learn to trust his henchponies from this adventure. Ironic that he taught her that viewpoint only for her to terrify him so bad he learns the value of trust and teamwork. I looked and he may not treat them well, but he does take care of his teammates when he appears in the show. And it is unfortunate, but not inconceivable, that despite her taking this betrayal as a learning experience she is still betrayed later.
I am glad to hear the action was well written. I had some issue with them, but if they turned out well that is a great sign that I can write action.

Another thing is that Doctor Caballeron never tried to kill her. Her fully expected that she would climb out of the caldera and escape. And he thought she would slow down for the traps. Evil as he can be, he did not try to kill Daring when his ponies had her on the ground, so I didn't think he would try to kill his partner. It was important to me that despite the fact that Doctor Caballeron is the villain here, he was not to be vilified. He is greedy and manipulative, but he is no killer. Although there is that time with the slime... Maybe deep down he knew she would save Rainbow. Or maybe he had finally cracked, willing to do things that used to be too terrible for him to commit.

Thanks for the review.
