I had an idea for a story that's similar to this one (Spike's not being a boss like he was here) that I've wondered about writing, but it looks like I got beat to the punch.

I might still write it at some point so I don't want to say too much, but my version would have had Twilight laying into Sunset instead of Spike, as well as be even wackier.
To give a taste of how crazy it was going to be, Sunset was going to explain her plan after killing Twilight, and Twilight was going to be revived just by her spirit hearing now dumb the plan was.

Hmmm, while Spike did mention time, he forgot about three other things, space (the room in which the mirror empties), co-ordination (transformed bodies), and bottleneck (the portal can only push so many bodies through at a time), not to mention the little detail of who might be in the that room (Mane-5, Princess Sun, Moon, and/or Love [mirror in the Kingdom] beside some random Guards) ...

These are great points, I think in the sequell when Sunset comes back to Equestria, Princess Luna and Discord would point out this too. It's a great reason too. But Spike was just buying some time, but if he was going to make a full review of that, of course it would show this points as well. But it wouldn't need the mane 5 or the guards, just saying it has 4 alicorns would be enough to defeat Sunset and her army.

spike the dog was really one of the worst decisions ever, like he's a person of equal stature literally turned into a dog because the writers couldn't just have two people running around
Yeah. The biggest complaints with Sunset's plan is that she has to deal with the other princesses and the mane six while her army will be brainwashed teens turned ponies. This bugged me for the longest time but it isn't as one-sided as one might think, as much as I hate to say it.
The Royal sisters or at least Celestia already left for Canterlot after the theft and she can just do the same she did to the other teens like she did to Snips and Snails. The result is an invasion of demons and without Twilight and the Element of Magic, the other Mane 5 are pretty much toast. The only royalty we can be certain will be available are Cadence and Shining Armor and with their track record, I don't think they will be much use against instant brainwashing.

That means Sunset Shimmer doesn't has much space to send all the students or time to make all of them cross the mirror. And Twilight would jump inside of mirror before, making her ready with the mane six to fight Sunset.

And it sure screwed him over in the long-run of EQG badly by reducing him to a dog.
Its pretty rare in seeing a fic where Spike actually hates being a dog and actually complains about being turned into a pufferfish.
I hated how the show just had Spike brush that aside even though there's a whole lot of problems and unfairness of being reduced to a dog like that.

They probably waited on the first day, but had to return afterwards because Equestria doesn't run itself. Given Twilight took until the last night to get the crown back, the sisters most likely had to push the duty to Cadence which is why you see only see her at the end. While Luna can do her dream duties by simply sleeping right there, this also means that she is unavailable every time it is night.

Yeah, I never watched the first one in a long time. So some info slipped. Also, Sunset is pretty much insane when she was corrupted so common sense is pretty much out the window and she might use her own demon army as human/pony shields.

This is the smokedest chapter I've ever read XD XD... plans to conquer with points that made me laugh... it was an ingenious plan by spike to send twilight to recover the crown while he distracted him...
