This was absolutely lovely.
There are certain 'types' of stories out there. 'Will they, won't they'. 'First kiss/love confession'. 'Engagement'. Most stories tend to be windows into particular points in time. Exploring themes within that time frame. But I have to say, it's rare to read a story that chooses a timeframe this 'late' into a relationship. Most writers seem to focus on the exciting and exhilarating start of things.
I guess that contributes to why I like this story so much. It's a rarity. And you handled it with great care. I enjoyed it wholly.
