Botched Lobotomy

Imprisoned (without charges) by the Paw Patrol

Gallus is really, truly unenthused about his latest assigned reading. Some lame romance by a long-dead author is good for pretty much one thing and one thing only: putting you to sleep. Sandbar decides to change his mind.

Shameless Gallbar fluff.

Kinda disappointed he didn't realise what was happening with the potion when he read the story the day before.

Ah well. These two gays give me free seratonin.

You said it <3

And yeah, I kinda wanted the low-stakes acting-out of the story in the last chapter to be unconscious. I felt that the characters themselves commenting on it might break the fourth wall a little too much, which wasn't really what I was going for. Glad you enjoyed it, though!

Thus with a kiss, I die.

god this is cute

This was fantastic! I really enjoyed seeing Gallus get swept up in the story and in Sandbar's touch.

10345161
Aww, thanks! That scene was a lot of fun on my end, too. Gallus and Sandbar be hella cute.

This was a nice cute story. And that's a lesson not to drink mysterious potions from Pinkie, even if they turn out to just be juice.

Why couldn't they have gotten you to write for the show? This is better than the last two seasons combined!

I'm all for the gay here, but the lack of fun pony puns does admittedly rob it of some of the potentials. While not everyone is, y'know, a poet it would have kept the setting more intact to edit the verses a little bit to have those sweet, sweet puns.

Lovely and very, very gay.

this can't be almost over wtf

yes yes yes yes yes yes

You should write the boys kissing more.

10638007
D'aww, thanks
(Imma take this as more complimentary than you probably meant, seeing as I actually enjoyed the last two seasons, too.)

10638988
Thass fair. There are some R+J jokes in there, but I basically just tweaked the verses themselves the absolute bare minumum so they didn't mention, like, hands.
And I could not for the life of me come up with a non-lame pun on Romeo and Juliet. Poneo and...? Yeah, nah, wasn't happening.

10639643
I've always gone with Roameo and Fillyet by William Saddlespeare, personally. There is also always the option of not using puns but name meanings and the like, which is always another good way to make a reference. When you need poetry though, puns might be better to preserve the same sounds.
10639649
I will be taking this as a good omen, then. 👀

10639657
👀 the auguries seem positive

And okay, Roameo's pretty good, I'll give ya that one.

10640495
Well, Muleiet could always work to preserve the sound more, but I always found the spelling to look off

And if that’s the case, I know now what I must do.

This is a really great story! GalBar one of my favorite ships(in a long list of shopping because yeah)>Great☆Work!

To the author - this story was saved in my 'read later' section (for i had some things in the way at the time) & finally leave a review.

1. i love the references to Romeo and Juliet & Faust!
personally favs of R&J are Baz lurhman movie (a slightly modern day interpretation) and French musical.
also know that faustian legend due to the French opera by Charles Gounod and phantom of the opera.

2. The ship of sandbar and gallus😍

10671051
Hey, thanks for taking the time!
I've never actually seen the Baz Lurhman version tbh, though every time I see a screenshot of that gun called "sword", the siren call of destiny grows ever louder.
...Come to think of it, Gnomeo and Juliet might actually be the only "adaption" of it I've actually seen. I should get on that.

The ship of sandbar and gallus😍

The ship of sandbar and gallus

10674894
no problem.

girl...what are you doing with your life! go buy the dvd online or watch it on a streaming service:flutterrage:
have you seen any of his movies like the great Gatsby, strictly ballroom or moulin rouge!?
that film is so iconic it got a immersive live experience by this company done in 2018
www.secretcinema.org/previous-worlds/romeo-and-juliet

Oh you poor soul. that's a horrible way to know/discover such a classic story:pinkiesick:

p.s: hope i'm not misgendering you based on your username
gallbar is one of my favorite m/m ships in mlp along with sporax (spike x thorax)
btw i lowkey like lyrabon and derpy x doctor whooves/time turner

10675616
I've seen Gatsby, and that was a pretty decent adaption of the book. I guess I know the next film I gotta watch, then. :raritywink:

Also, don't worry, I've read the play. Gnomeo and Juliet isn't the only version I know, lol.

I really need to read more Spike/Thorax, it's a cute ship. Lyrabon is also pretty dope, though I usually find myself defaulting to OctaScratch whenever I'm in the mood for that specific flavour of fic.

And it's only a little misgendering, don't worry about it :trollestia:

10676361
Gatsby (2013) with DiCaprio is only adaption i'll watch as the other two are very old.

oh please do watch Moulin rouge it's such awesome movie.
just avoid the Broadway musical adaption of it...now you might be asking 'Why is that?' while the songs (in the movie) are done organically, moving the plot forward compared to stage version it's barraged with modern day pop songs like lady gaga & etc!

alright i see...that's a relief.

p.s: i'm so sorry!!! i tend to look up the identity of said author beforehand
(since there is no bio about yourself. if you prefer to remain anonymous/keep your privacy that's cool in my book)
also this message was meant to be posted up on February 13th but my laptop gave me some trouble:facehoof:

10695360
We do love computer troubles.

Moulin Rouge is another one I've been meaning to watch tbh, especially as it's a musical. That film looks so honestly insane its powerful. Strong fever dream energy.
...And duly noted, I'll steer clear of the stage version. :applejackconfused:

Really don't worry about it lol. As you say, I like a bit of privacy :moustache:

10697158
you. don't. know. the. half. of. it!
(this laptop has causing me hell since august of 2017 and had been looking for a replacement. then surprisingly my mother brought me a Samsung laptop for Christmas 2020 & haven't used it cause i'm trying to remove various links off my web history:twilightblush:) which is why i kinda stopped reading stories on fimfiction.

good to know you like musicals👍 as most of the fics i write are musical based
that film open the door for movie musicals to be popular again:)

p.s: here's an original song that's written for moulin rouge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV7KqBLCekk
also don't put off by this pop rendition as it's not like that in the actually movie!!

Poneo & Hoofliet

That's the great thing about puns, they can be as horrible as you want because that's the point!

I went to say “Really?” or “Thank the stars”, or even just his name, just “Sandbar,” but along the way it got caught and all I let out was a squeak. His eyes sparkled, and I felt myself blushing.

[flustered homosexual catbirb noises]

This was touching, heartwarming, and overwhelmingly gay. I loved every second of it. I really loved the Student Six, and I really wish the show had done more with them in the last season. The Hearthswarming Club is one of my favorite episodes, as it shows us these different cultures and families, dives a bit deeper into their characters, and goddangit Gallus' backstory just made me want to remove my heart so it would stop breaking.

I'm generally a ride-or-die crewman on the S.S. YonaBar, but GallBar has a special place in my heart. That mix of gruff tsundere and borderline oblivious honesty is just too cute. You did a great job of showcasing that here. Gallus recognizing his feelings was very natural and organic, and it never felt forced or schmaltzy. Not one of those "Alien Mind Worm" types of romances, where the main character just for no reason can't stop thinking about the object of there affection.

SO yeah, I agree with 10638999. You should write about more boys kissing. You do it very well. Great job, my dude. :ajsmug:

10837970

I agree with Ice Star.

Your bold, though favorable, move is noted. :raritywink:

10838689
Replying to Spike with Rarity wearing the bi flag colors, hm?

(The heart is pink; it counts.)

I see where this is going.

HEY like six months later and i still read this late at night and giggle to myself at how FUCKING CUTE IT IS amazing job for real

Where civil blood makes civil hooves unclean.

always love ponification of literature i don’t care if it’s sometimes just replacing “hands” with “hooves”

Ocellus nodded, staring straight ahead and trying very hard to ignore us. Smolder winced. I bit back a snicker. The play droned on.

oof, common ironic Ocellus L to be admonished for being the only student to actually care about the subject being taught

“It about pony who makes deal with draconequus and gets dragged into Tartarus!”

hehe love this translation to pony culture

I landed back beside her with a sigh. “Yup. Romance? Lame.”

“You said it,” she agreed.

Sandbar nodded, but didn’t meet my eye.

augh so true and so GallBar

“Honestly!” Smolder crossed her arms, puffing her chest out. “It’s kind of...sweet?”

Smolder’s definitely more able to admit the softer side of herself than Gallus is

“Aww, Smolder!” Ocellus nuzzled up next to her. “It’s okay, we can be eggheads together.”

“I’m not an egghead!” Smolder protested, but she didn’t try to pull away.

i ship them now

“Say, Celly, how does this end? I hope they stay together.”

not knowing this feels like a consequence of Gallus not growing up in Equestria, as i imagine the Shakespeare-analogue’s place in Equestrian culture to be analogous to what Shakespeare is in the Anglosphere

“Isn’t that due, like, tomorrow?”

“Twelve hours and forty-two minutes,” I said in a small, horrified voice.

oof now i am getting flashbacks to my school days!

I watched him feebly from the floor. “Help?”

He looked over at me, and I could see on his lips the smile he was fighting to keep down. “’Course,” he said, after a moment, and patted the bed beside him. “Come over, then.”

of course i did not have a Sandbar in my life then which is too bad!

“My...claws hurt?” I tried.

“Hooves,” he pointed out.

“Fair enough.”

which just raises further questions about how earthponies are supposed to read books! (i guess on a table or à la Applejack in that one scene?)

For some reason, he used his own voice for Romeo, and as dumb as it was, that seemed the most natural thing of all.

oh hell yeah it’s natural! (oh wait no Romeo and Juliet are not at all a romance to be emulated no it’s not natural!)

We had shifted, he and I, and somehow I’d ended up almost on his lap, against his chest, his head resting on mine as he spoke. I could feel the rumble of the words through his body, into mine, and for some reason I found that strangely comforting. If I noticed my heart beat a little faster every time he moved around me to turn a page, I don’t remember: I just knew his voice.

augh i love this! always an adorable romantic trope, hearing the other’s breathing and speaking through their body, just makes my heart melt

Silence fell, only it wasn’t silence, cause Sandbar was there too. I blinked, and blinked again, willing whatever it was rising in me to go back down where it belonged. It wasn’t sadness, exactly, or joy, or even relief, it was...well, I didn’t know what it was. A stirring, maybe.

really one of those ineffable experiences anycreature would be lucky to live even once

I hadn’t purred since I was a hatchling – yet I felt no need to force it down.

aww love involuntary noises specific to a creature’s species

O speak again, bright angel, for thou art As glorious to this night, being o’er my head As a winged messenger of heaven.

hey Gallus has wings!

So I guess that was how I realised that I’m maybe sorta kind of in love with Sandbar.

what a beautiful way to reali[z]e it!

I failed my report, but that was okay. Scribe had clucked disapprovingly when I’d presented him the empty parchment, and I was sure Grampa Gruff would get a strongly-worded letter about it at some point, unless I persuaded Gabby to lose it along the way, but I had more pressing things to worry about.

love how forgotten the original goal of not failing the report has instantly become

Ponies didn’t usually fight unless they had to – unless something they really cared about was at stake.

ehehe i can guess!

Ocellus shook her head knowingly. “You know I can taste emotions, don’t you?”

“Not fair.”

“I can’t exactly help it.”

that does change the possible contours of a two-friends-are-in-love-with-each-other-but-don’t-know-how-to-admit-it plot quite a bit! “not fair” is a good way to describe it from Gallus’s point of view

I took a deep breath. “I hate Romeo and Juliet,” I told her, meeting her gaze as levelly as I could.

“Egghead,” she pronounced.

ehehe love the callback

“Nope! Her and Starlight are taking the day off to spend it together, or something. I’ve been called in to help out!”

yay bonus background StarTrix

“I...” I pressed one claw very gently against my forehead. “Sure. It’s more of an administration issue, anyway.”

“Oh, I’m good at those!”

given her extensive system of dossiers i believe this strongly

“Well,” I started, and paused. I want Sandbar to move class so we can read together and cuddle and maybe make out a little too didn’t seem like quite the right way to put it.

a. that is the perfect way to put it
b. especially to Pinkie Pie

I suddenly, desperately wished I’d caught that conversation. “Isn’t student information confidential?”

“Sure!” She gave me a huge wink. It didn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

very Pinkie Pie. also Trixie, now that i think about it! haha what a school

“Aww, I can’t say no to that. So I totally would! If I knew how.”

I buried my face in my claws. “Thanks anyway.”

love that it’s easier to give Gallus a mysterious magical potion from an exotic land than it is to let them switch classes

I took the vial, popped it open, and raised it in toast to the stars. Really, what was the worst that could happen?

really anything could happen after a character says that!

I woke up two days later.

ahaha love how this was included in the list of Gallus’s possibilities

Like Yakyakistani flat-pack furniture, or something.

this worldbuilding makes too much sense

“Yup.” He sat down on the bed next to me, his tail just inches from my nearest claw. I had the sudden, bizarre urge to play with it.

auauauaugh

Silverstream said that maybe since Professor Pie was kind of a draconequus herself, your soul might have been dragged off to Tartarus.”

ooh this got called back too, nice!

“And then Professor Pie went to scratch her head and found out she’d given you the wrong bottle.”

I stared.

“It was blackcurrent juice you drank.”

so perfectly Pinkie

He threw up his hooves in the air and shouted – actually shouted – ‘Work? Work? That griffon’s never worked a day in his life!’ Ocellus swears she could see a blood vessel threatening to burst in his forehead.”

love this reaction

“Okay.” He bit his lip, and said in a rush, “I kinda sorta kissed you when you were asleep.”

oh hey just like Romeo and Juliet!

Silence hung between us, and my cheeks burned, and I traced patterns in the wood that were dull as I’d thought the play to be, but it was better than looking up to see him staring, to see him moving away.

ooooooph you render this stomach-churning moment so well

I went to say “Really?” or “Thank the stars”, or even just his name, just “Sandbar,” but along the way it got caught and all I let out was a squeak. His eyes sparkled, and I felt myself blushing.

“Gallus,” he said, looking at me quite seriously, “that was unbearably cute.”

auauaugh i agree, perfect response

Thus with a kiss, I die.

and closing with a line from the play, just like the opening!

well that was just absolutely delightful. the GallBar was perfect, but i also want to note just how on-point the other members of the Student Six and the teachers were, and how it all came together to form a wonderfully lived-in whole. thank you so much for it!
