The fireplace crackled away, burning warmly at one wall and a snowstorm howled outside. Luckily temperature has been slowly climbing for the last couple of days, but I was still thankful to be inside.
I rested lightly against Luna's side, my head against her shoulder as I held a notepad in my magic as I scribbled away in it as she worked on her own paperwork.
The door opened and Sunset walked inside, shaking her cloak slightly. I looked up to her and smiled, “Hey… thought you were staying with Sparks tonight.”
Sunset flicked her ears, “So did I. Turns out the Sparkle Twins are going to be busy all night again,” she said, sounding slightly annoyed before crossing over to jump up on the couch next to me, squeezing in and resting her head against my side.
“Ah… Sorry,” I said with a small frown and put my wing around her as I closed my notebook, “That’s my fault.”
“Them being unable to put a problem down isn’t your fault,” Sunset said and sighed, “So I figured I’d stay with you two tonight if that’s fine.”
Luna smiled and turned her head to give Sunset a nuzzle, “Of course it’s fine. But when ponies get like that, I found it’s better to just put your hoof down and pull them where you want them to be.”
Sunset smiled slightly and nuzzled back, giving Luna a kiss on the cheek, “I have before, but the worst thing is that they are actually doing something really important. Besides, Twi get all pouty and Tempest wasn’t there to distract Midnight anyway.”
“Oh? They’re official now?” I asked with a smile.
“Not quite, but getting there,” Sunset said and smirked, “None of them is very good at sneaking about.”
“There is that.”
“So,” Sunset asked and looked at my notebook, “What are you writing?”
“Porn for Sunshine.”
Sunset stared at me for a second before rolling her eyes, “Fine, don’t tell me. Keep your secrets.”
“He won’t tell me either,” Luna said and nosed at my ear.
I grinned and shook my head, resting against her.
“Speaking of sleep though,” Luna said and looked to Sunset, “It’s about time you two head to bed.”
I groaned but nodded. I wanted more cuddle time, but she was right, it was getting late. I then looked to her, “Think we can give it a try today?”
Luna nodded, “I’ll join you in the dream realm in a couple of hours. Now go get some rest.”
“Try what?” Sunset asked and jumped off the couch, letting me slip off it with her to explain on the way.
“The last couple of nights and nights I have been visiting the dreams of thestrals,” I explained as we entered the bedroom, “Finding out their names and what they do. I have managed to find about four hundred and seventy ponies that would be primary candidates for the first wave of colonists. At least the numbers are looking a bit better now in total, seems like a lot have night jobs. We’re close to five thousand in total.”
“Oh?”
I nodded and pulled the thick blanket away with my magic before jumping onto the bed, sinking down with a sigh, “Yeah,” I said and stretched for a moment, “Plan is to try to gather all we chose into a single semi dream, projecting an image to all of them to get the message out to them to see if they want to go. We have to see how many are willing to come, but to do it they have to know about it.”
Sunset watched me for a moment with a small smirk, making me blush slightly before she jumped onto the bed to join me, scooting close and letting me cover her with my wing before her horn lit and she pulled the blanket over us, “But isn’t hit difficult to affect more than one dream at a time.”
“Very,” I said, “Luna says she very rarely uses it because of the strain and only a couple of ponies at a time,” and nuzzled at her mane.
“And you pĺan to try it with four hundred ponies at once?” Sunset asked sceptically, “That seems…”
“Stupid?” I asked with a grin, “Oh yeah. But there are a few things that’ll make this possible. One is that I won’t try to make it a full dream, just a projection. Besides, Luna’s going to help me power it. No way I’d try to do it on my own.”
Sunset made a small thoughtful sound before she rolled over and nuzzled in beneath my chin with a small soft sigh before relaxing again, “We’re really doing this, aren’t we?” she asked softly.
“I think we are,” I confirmed and pulled her softly tighter.
She nodded and sighed softly, “Okay. So I might as well make myself useful. I’ll talk with Twi tomorrow whenever she and Midnight wake up and then coordinate with the Legion for the move.”
“You’re too good for me,” I said softly, nuzzling at her ear, “Love you.”
“You’re so lucky you’re rich,” she said softly and cuddled closer, “Love you too.”

This is so frustrating. Not only is Page so insistent on going through with this dumb idea, but everyone around him (many of whom are supposed to be at least several times smarter and/or more experienced than him) are all enabling him to go through with it. And he seems to be going about doing it in the dumbest way possible.
If he felt so bad about the few ponies that died on the expedition he went on then he'd be proceeding a lot more slowly and carefully here, since screwing up will get a lot more ponies killed, and this time it actually will be his fault.

I think it is just Hiver's writing style working against him. He does great at Slice of Life and he seems to do all of his chapters the very same day which is why we're getting such fast updates. And most Slice of Life chapters are usually separate and contained; it was rare for him to actually do an ongoing story for more than two or three chapters. Now that he's moving into an adventure and drama it's not working out so well. Something like this does tend to require a bit more planning. Or at least my attempts at have proven to be very ineffective without planning.

In this kind of situation, both side of the argument have validity. On the one side where Page is going forward in this and not being stopped, there are numerous drawbacks. It's dangerous. It has the potential for him to repeat mistakes he's already made. It can easily lead to a hostile form of segregation if the already established pony tribes have too large of a gathering form in opposition of Thestrals reestablishing themselves. There is easily a lot that can go wrong.
On the flip side of things, Page is the leading pony when it comes to understanding Thestrals. There is a lot to learn about their tribe that needs to be discovered. The plan to move them into an isolated area is something that scientists have already put into action as it is a proven method in gathering data on nearly extinct species; recreating their habitat for contained and continuous conditions for accurate information with as little variation as possible. Despite the social drawbacks, the village idea would create a foothold for them to turn their declining population in the opposite direction. In addition, it would prevent possible altercations if a different, predatory side, of Thestrals were to surface. Morally, it would be better to have the Thestrals revealed without the 'shady dealings' atmosphere that is currently going on, but the reality is that conditions need to be established for the safety of all tribes. Yes this move can lead to the 'normal' ponies reacting badly if/when they learn of a growing population of Thestrals, but the fact must be kept in mind that Thestrals have an equal potential to lash out at the other three tribes. The fuel for conflict is easily possible on both sides.
So with that in mind, the better choice is to create a temporary segregation for the short term. The population is ridiculously low and does need to be increased if the Thestrals are to avoid extinction. Additionally, their tribe needs to be researched from the foundation up. Just how do they differ from the other three tribes? What are their needs? What are their strengths? Weaknesses? Can they become more compatible to produce more offspring with the curse and blood magic removed? Is there any part of their natural biology that could be a threat to other ponies? Is there any part of any of the other tribes that is dangerous for Thestrals?
The questions are numerous, but they can't be answered if the race goes extinct.
In regards to Luna and Celestia being more experienced with this sort of thing and not stopping Page... I wouldn't be surprised if they were allowing things to transpire just so that Page can learn things first hoof. They can easily tell him no, and say the reasons why, but Celestia has already admitted that she had been completely unaware of just how bad the situation had gotten. She and Luna both could not, and did not, stop the decline in the Thestral's situation. But, this is a golden opportunity that neither of them would pass up. Page is essentially following in their steps and redeeming an entire tribe. They could do things their way, but they lack the trust of Thestrals, so it would have very little chance of succeeding. Page, however, has just what is needed to gain their trust. His methods are amateurish at best, but he's not without help when needed. Which makes this the perfect scenario for him to learn on his own, under his own power and effort. It's the same way Celestia handled things with Twilight leading up to the purple princess' ascension.
I could be wrong, but this is what I think from what I've read so far. In either case, wether it be moral or logical, I find myself curious to see just where things end up for

You make some good points. The issue people keep bringing up about the bat ponies being near extinction and our real world experiences dealing with it has this problem: we've only dealt with animals nearing extinction, not sapient beings. Also, the part of the blood curse that dramatically decreased the odds of a bat pony being born is the main reason for their low numbers. With that aspect gone, their numbers will at least stabilize. If the bat ponies were encouraged to start more families, that would also help. And yes, I definitely considered that Celestia (probably not Luna) was trying to make this into a learning experience for Page.
I disagree with the part about Page being the leading pony on understanding bat ponies. He's just able to easily locate them. He doesn't know anything about their strengths and weaknesses, what they went through growing up, or anything like that.
Another thing that I'd be interested in finding out is if bat ponies are ever born to non-bat pony parents. We've seen that earth ponies can have unicorn and pegasus foals, so we know that the foals aren't guaranteed to be the same tribe as their parents. So now I'm wondering if there's something that affects the rate at which bat ponies are born to non-bat pony parents and if there's any way they could remove that curse, if there is one.
In the end, this has gone on for a very long time (I can't recall off hand if it was said whether this bat pony civilization was around before Celestia and Luna or how long if it was) and the bat pony population has only decreased to around five thousand (which makes me wonder about the population numbers for the other tribes and species). That the bat ponies didn't go extinct in all that time without anyone even noticing is a miracle and suggests that they aren't literally about to go extinct like Page is acting like they are. They've lasted this long, they can last long enough for everyone to take things slowly and come up with a proper plan instead of rushing like they are. And if they manage to remove the curse from enough bat ponies (Twilight and Midnight really need to come up with a way of making the process faster or possible for others to do), then their numbers should gradually recover. The main issue is that ponies seem to be capable of having foals that are neither tribe that their parents are, so there's the possibility that two bat pony parents have foals and don't have any bat pony foals, even after the curse is removed. So how many bat pony parents will decide they only want one or two foals and only have a pegasus, unicorn, or earth pony foal(s)?

Indeed, and it wasn't like I was saying that Page was more educated. He's merely the leading pony by default as he has experienced their livelihood to a better degree than any other. It's a pampered version, but he's been subjected to enough of their suffering to know a change is over due.
I also agree with your point on studies like this only being on animals, but that isn't entirely accurate. Human studies have been done, most with ill intentions. What Page is attempting could still be considered an experiment on a sapient race, but again, it depends on how an individual interprets this village plan. The theory behind both viewpoints is fascinating in themselves.
The severity of the possibility for extinction is another open ended theory. With the current number having doubled to the five thousand mark, it's less troublesome than what we were thinking a few chapters ago, but there are still things we don't know yet. I think the biggest factor we don't know, one that could add increased support to the population being more at risk, is just how many of the remaining population are elderly. Without a demographic chart showing how many are foals, young, teen, adult, and elderly, there's no way to know how bad things are. So I agree that jumping to conclusions is in poor taste, but it's human nature to cater to minorities (America has been conditioned to automatically feel sympathy for the lesser fortunate over the past decade).
We also don't have exact numbers from their population back from before Luna was banished. Aside from knowing their numbers have dropped over the past 1000 years, we have no solid way to know the amount of decline. Although, perspectively, 5000 is about the same population of the town I live in, which only spans a 6 x 3 mile area. Under the right conditions, it is not a far fetched concept that those 5000 would be gone in a few generations. The same can be said for the opposite argument. We just don't know enough at this point in time to say if either direction is more or less plausible.
So yeah, it's amusing to see how passionate people are when they don't know enough for a proper argument, but the power of emotions drives them to feel so strongly. It makes for some interesting reading. I look forward to seeing how all this pans out. Let's see if we get some answers soon.

Thanks for pointing that part out. Okay, so if they've had this blood curse that reduced their chances of having bat pony offspring for even two thousand years (I lowered it to two thousand to account for the time their empire was actually around), then how big was their civilization that it took two thousand years for that curse to reduce their population to a mere five thousand bat ponies? If it was massive, then why are they only just now finding signs of it? This isn't adding up.

I get where you're coming from regarding Page, but he hasn't experienced what it's like to spend years hiding who he is and growing up with the fear of discovery. By the time he became a bat pony alicorn he was already in a position where he was effectively beyond the reach of anyone who might try to actually cause him or his family serious harm upon finding out he was a bat pony. What could they even do to him? Ignore him? He seems like he'd be perfectly happy ignoring society at large and just spending time with his inner circle and writing books.
Alternatively, look at Fluttershy before season 1. She lived alone in a cottage on the outskirts of a small town and arguably her only friend there was Rainbow Dash. If she were outed as a bat pony, she probably would've gotten the Zecora treatment, with only Rainbow Dash giving her the time of day. A single slip-up and her life in that town would pretty much be over.
You're right about the lack of information regarding the bat pony demographics. It makes speculating about stuff like this inaccurate at best, since assumptions are the best we can do in many cases.
I don't think they're in danger of going extinct in a few generations though, even if left alone. It'd definitely make eventually recovering their population a lot harder though and they may have to resort to ethically and morally objectionable programs, but I don't think they'd die out.

If you don't want to read all of this I do understand, but if you have the time and/or feel like it, could you come up with a plan that is better than Page's, because if you can I would genuinely like to hear it, I find it kinda fascinating to read some of the ideas people can come up with to solve fictional problems.
The blood magic on the thestrals is the supersoldier thing and the curse that is affecting their birth rates and supresses their enhancements is layered on top of that, so removing the curse causes the effects of the blood magic to return which quite literally makes the thestrals bloodthirsty superponies.
This is a problem in a society full of xenophobic, hypocritical and quick to judge ponies.
Which means that removing the blood magic is also needed, but doing this also removes their ability to look like pegasi so the xenophobic ponies will shun and fear them making it very difficult for the thestrals to live in the current Equestria's society.
In an earlier chapter (I think in chapters 11-14?) Page tested out how a thestral would be treated by the average pony by looking like one for a day.
Not only was he shuned and feared but ponies actually called the guard on him, that's not to mention his failure to find work.
Admittingly one day isn't the best test example but Celestia also tried the same thing with similar results about a century before.
So something has to be done to make thestrals a more normal sight to the average Equestrian, this can't really be done with a low population, and 5000 is a low number in a country of millions.
And then there is the thestrals themselves, they all think that if they reveal themselves as thestrals they will get shuned and hated by their friends for what they are and unfortunately evidence support this.
Page's plan, while not perfect and can very well fail, isn't a quick or sure fix, it's a plan that will take at least three to five generations to even get anywhere with the low population issue and then maybe the same amount, or probably more, time for proper integration into Equestria's society.
And like i said even then it might fail, but seeing as the current status quo is a slow extinction and no one else seems to have any ideas it's worth pursuing.
Now if you have a better idea than Page I would genuinely like to hear it, I find it kinda fascinating to read some of the ideas people can come up with to solve fictional problems.

Joking aside I do truly think Page could help things out by writing a book or two a bi out Thestrals. Ply his talent a bit. Stories shape perception, and sex sells, over enough time you might get the younger ones being more open to Thestrals kind of like how furry stuff has been over the past decades.
How ponies naturally react to this of course will affect the results, this is a whole race and not a fictional group in-universe. Everyone seems to be applying real-world human history to a fictional nation's problems, but they're not. There's more similarities than differences but things always tend to work out one way or another here.
With all Page knows, the best way perhaps truly is to start a new village just for Thestrals to grow up safe. Cloudsdale and Canterlot were historically single-tribe settlements and still mostly are but it's hardly monolithic in population now. As long as Page is there to prevent the inherent pony racism from letting the Thestrals cut themselves off, as long as there are other ponies willing to be friendly, to move and visit and do business in whatever ways - they'll be fine.

you forget once the curse is broken thestrali genetics likely work like any other tribe, meaning after that point any line they breed into will have a chance of having thestrali children on down the line which means that other breeds of pony can be at that point safely mixed into the gene pool the strengthen it, this however is more a supliment to pages plan rather then a replacement for it, it would speed things up reducing the number of gtenerations required...another good idea would be to begin a concerted effort at including thestrali history in mainstream school, while not as effective as direct exposure knowing that the thestrali have a history of there own, tragic though it is, will help future generations be more accepting when integration begins in earnest, as is all they have to go on are ghost stories and legends.

I didn't forget it, the problem is that once the curse breaks the blood magic that made them bloodrinking superponies work like it's supposed to and leaving that alone is too likely to cause problems in the future so removing that is also necessary.
Unfortunately doing so also means that they can't hide using the illusion magic they previously had and as seen in the chapters 11-14 the average pony makes it very difficult for a thesteral to live in a city or town.
Which is why Page intends to start a town that will mainly be built to give the thesterals a town to call their own, one that is a lot like Canterlot for the unicorns or Cloudsdale for the pegasi.

i'm aware on the first bit, my suggestion would been not to have them directly integrate with the main population but let equestria as a whole know that thestralia or whatever they come to name there home is there, and ask for volunteers from other tribes to move there, some already will have as they will probably be related to thestrals who make the trip, though these will likely all be pegasi, but others may come out of a desire to help, while as a whole ponies can be xenophobic and panicky individuals here and there can rise above it, it wont be an army for sure but new blood (pardon the pun) is never a bad thing

Something to note: The cake twins were a completely different species from their parents due to "distant ancestry".
The rest of this assumes that bat ponies have the same pony child unpredictability as the rest of ponykind and that considering that them being very spread out means probably have parents, grandparents and beyond of non bat pony ancestry.
There is a good chance once the colony starts anywhere between a large minority to a majority of foals there would be of the 3 big tribes and not bat pony foals, assuming of course that bat ponies follow the same child species pattern of the rest of ponykind. It will be a while before the colony can reliably (see: Apple and Pie families) start birthing exclusively Bat Ponies.
Assumining the worst, the repercussion of having the bat ponies suddenly being a minority in their own colony would be an interesting thing to read.

To remind you:
1) Thestrals are shunned, and are hiding behind an illusion.
2) Princesses tried(unsuccefully) to cure/intergrate thestrals into pony society.
3) Page is human, and can go farther, or think from other angles than average pony or princess. He also brought info about the urgency in the matter, and Princesses have literally no choice, but have him go at it. Either that, or let batters die in few dozens to hundreds of years. Not die but breed out, more like.
4) Page is also a trusted figure, because he made contact with some, and right now he has more pull than all of Princesses combined, when it comes to convincing bat ponies do one thing or another.

In no particular order, here's what I'd try to do:
I know it's not perfect and I'm likely overlooking or forgetting something, but it's a lot safer and more viable than just moving out to a patch of land and building a colony from scratch. It's also likely to be more enticing knowing there's actually something there for you other than a patch of land a lot of hard work that you've probably got no knowledge of how to do. It also helps with actual integration, which is the eventual goal. Increasing the population remains an issue because there's a line between actually helping the population in a healthy manner and interfering and forcing it. They're people with free will and their own desires and that's not something I'd want to infringe on in the name of "the greater good". If there's a bat pony mare that likes mares and has no interest in stallions or having a family, I'm not gonna try and force her to have foals until she has X bat pony foals all for the sake of reaching Y bat pony population.
When all's said and done, it's not an easy task and there are a ton of variables and unknowns. I'm just hoping the story remains interesting.
