"When the dust has cleared, and victory denied; a summit too lofty, river a little too wide. If we keep our pride, though paradise is lost, we will pay the price, but we will not count the cost."

This story is a sequel to Starlit Romance

Once more, the Hearth's Warming season has arrived and Starlight was caught unprepared. While virtually everypony appeared to have plans for the season, only an empty nest is around to greet her. Others may be experiencing the joy of Hearth's Warming, but lonely minds love to bring back painful memories, and Starlight has them in abundance.

With Sunburst away to assist with the latest series of "incidents" that Flurry Heart has caused in the Crystal Empire, and her own gift purchasing left to the last moment, reliving memories is the only companion she has, and it is an unkind one at best.

Edited as always by the amazing EverfreePony. The story is already complete and will be updated every Saturday.

Cover art is Warming Up by Novaintellus.

Can I just say that your puns are fantastic? Because they are, I found myself giggling a couple of times as I read. And reading Starlight trying to teach a class of uninterested students reminded me so much of my own experience teaching, nothing more painful than that smh. Can't wait to read the rest!

I've always had fun making pony puns, and just some puns in general. I would say that I wrote the teaching from my own experiences as a student at points, but I think either the student or teacher can relate well to Starlight's situation. :rainbowlaugh:

Glad you liked the first chapter. I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest.

Very promising direction and great writing all around. You've got my interest.

Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Last Christmas, due to work and travel circumstances, there was the possibility that my mom would have to be all alone for an entire week (we worked it out, thankfully). I've never paid too much importance to holiday celebrations, but for the first time it dawned on me how depressing it would be to spend Christmas alone of all times.

This story is giving me that exact same feeling. Poor Starlight.

It is unfortunate that what you described is reality for many people. I'm glad that it was worked out for you in the end.

Starlight definitely is not having the easiest time right now, for sure. There's still the chance for a surprise to turn things around.

I did not expect the fluff, but I don't know how much more sad Starlight I could have handled for today so it's very welcomed.

Also, is this not the last chapter? It kinda feels like one.

Fluff is always appreciated to offset some feels. There is one more chapter, although it's an epilogue, so it's shorter. Was planning to publish it next weekend.

Glad that I could provide. There's still a bit more in the fuzzy feeling department, though. Was going to publish the epilogue next Saturday, but I'm thinking I'll post it tomorrow. We have to see what happens on Hearth's Warming Day, after all.

Oh-ho~! I was wondering what the sex tag was for~!

This was a really sweet story! I like how you portrayed how the holidays can be difficult for some people and I can definitely see how Starlight could be one of those, and the silver lining you threw in the form of Sunburst really warmed my heart. All I can say is that I love it! Great job!

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I wanted to stretch myself with writing another sad story, so I'm pleased that it came across well. We all need a person like Sunburst in our lives, if you ask me.

My editor bapped me over the head for spurning Sunset, so perhaps something in the future with Sunset finding out she got ignored by Twilight for her own honourific element is in order. Especially if it was given to her brother's (yes, I love that head canon now) marefriend. :raritywink:

Wow Sunburst I know it's probably your first time and all but I didn't think it'd be that forgettable.
(Sorry that I ruined the fluff but this was too good to pass)

You could say it was such a blur there wasn't much to remember. But yeah, I could have probably added a bit more of his demeanor, but, eh, at this point, what's written is written. :rainbowlaugh:

Glad you still enjoyed the story overall, though.
