The Bricklayer

Slow down, you're doing fine, you can't be everything you want to be, before your time... -Vienna, The Stranger: Billy Joel. (Any Pronouns)

So yeah, Gallus was happy enough he supposed. Had a great boyfriend, and actual friends. Life was good.

...except for ongoing debates on if being gay should be allowed. Stallions were a precious thing, and well mares outnumbered them ten to one. So what did that make a stallion wanting to date another guy? Gallus, faced with the potential ending of his relationship, worries and then he speaks out. Loudly, in fact.

I said it was gay right? Also, yes I'm trying to see how many people I can annoy with that. Also, wow is Fimfic so inclusive right now. Normally fics that wouldn't get a second glance are getting downvoted like crazy. It's really rather inane.

This happens every year, sadly. My pride story from last year got a lot of inexplicable hate, so much so I disabled ratings. I also got attacked by a bunch of Conservative Christians for promoting 'Satanic and sinful things'.

Whatever happened to 'love one another as I have loved you'?

Daw, this was sweet and beautiful.

This was a nice sweet story. Yes, things ended up going pretty easily, what with all the princesses on Gallus and Sandbar's side, but I think it's fine for there to be fics like that. The odd part is them having to speak for themselves at the court case instead of Twilight getting a lawyer, but I'm sure she's giving them a lot of civics credits for that.

Gallus and Sandbar had nice interactions. I do feel like Gallus had much more influence on the flow of the conversations and of the story than Sandbar, but that is in his nature.

I felt at first that the low male population reason for being against male/male relationships was giving too much of an in-universe justification, but then you had Ocellus bring up there are other ways to handle it, so that's good.

I love this story well put me being bisexual it means a lot 2 me

Bah! ...and people wonder why I'm an atheist. No offense intended. Personally, I think you should have kept the ratings up, show them you won't let them win. But to each his own.

Ooooh, I spy your first downvote on your comment. People really are popping out of the woodworks lately.

Bit of a long comment, so I'll address each section.

I originally thought about the Princesses being there, and it implied that they themselves were too scared to voice against the bill. Hated that for so many reasons. As for Twilight, well, the fic's supposed to imply she herself has a law degree. ...unlike yours truly, who had to guess at this stuff.

Gallus and Sandbar had nice interactions. I do feel like Gallus had much more influence on the flow of the conversations and of the story than Sandbar, but that is in his nature.

Well, that and I'm more comfortable writing by this point admittedly.

I felt at first that the low male population reason for being against male/male relationships was giving too much of an in-universe justification, but then you had Ocellus bring up there are other ways to handle it, so that's good.

Better a slim justification than no justification at all right? I was trying not to stretch the suspension of disbelief too badly. Also, Ruin was the one who pointed out the alternatives, to me actually. Girl's a gem.

10289348
Same, actually.

10289334
I do try, wanted to strike a nice balance between drama and just cute.

10289385
I'll reinstate the ratings.

This was nice to read. It's a familiar lesson, but sadly one that all too often bears repeating. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I got a chuckle out of the mention of nobody batting an eye at female/female relationships but male-male ones draw more criticism or derision. Because really it made me think that these nobles were closet yuri fans, or it's a good meta jab at self-proclaimed gay advocates in fandom who adore lesbian pairings but go ballistic over gay male ones, or what-have-you.

I'm really happy to see that you show Neighsay having more of an open mind and that he's learned his lesson. A little bit less happy in some regards that Blueblood is part of this circus of looneys, but then again he does tell Upper Crust to shut up, so at least he's not a raving bigot like some takes might portray him. (And this is just me personally, keep in mind...)

“Not a bad idea, actually now that you mention it,” Gallus said. “Can’t see any other way to get the nobilities to listen.”

I think this sentence, should either end with "the nobility" or "the nobles". Because "the nobilities" (at least to me) suggests that there are multiple groups of nobility out there (i.e. say from places beyond Equestria) who are in support of this law.

Well this was an interesting read, keep it up.

It is very much snide meta-commentary, actually.

No, this Blueblood was intended as less of a bigot, and more worried about the future of the male population. He's still an idiot, mind, but not a bigot. Or an intentional one at least. Which is more than you can say for Jet Set and his wife.

Fixed.

I very much approve.

Ahh. Duly noted. And again, my response should be taken with a little grain of salt - I just am really tired of the "Blueblood is a bigot" trope in these fan-stories so I can get pretty exasperated with it sometimes. And again, you did it a lot better here, I didn't think he was truly intentionally bigoted or hateful, just misguided or blinkered.

Yay! I love the message of this story! Keep up the good work!

So being banned wasn't enough for you once? You went and got yourself a new account to trash everyone's ships again? Go fuck off.

10289607
Bricklayer can ship whomever he wants. It's a free country. I personally don't ship Galbar, but I'm open-minded enough to accept that people do like this ship.

Not only that, it's a good story. Stop talking out of your ass.

10289647
I get similar shit over shipping Sandbar and Ocellus.

10289666
Just ignore him, Late's the special snowflake kind of obnoxious. He's done this to FamousLastWords amongst other people. He's been banned once from this site and I'm sure it'll happen again. Trust me, talking to him is like talking to a brick wall.

10289434

I very much approve.

Rattled a few eggs, by the dislike count. How prophetic.

Misguided is the best term, really. He's not *evil* in the traditional sense, just a bit stupid. And for the record, I'm tired of that trope as well.

10289674
I know that kind. I have to deal with loads of them at uni.

This is pretty gay

Really intrigued by some of those parenthood headcanons you made. Not gonna lie, I'm kinda interested in hearing how some of those came about.

A nice story overall, and one that most certainly deserves a far better like-dislike ratio than what it currently has. Give my regards to the author!
:)

Now if only some of the dislikers running amok would come out of the woodwork and offer up some constructive criticism, because right now the only conclusion I'm coming to is that they're just being petty...

Who else thinks Jet Set and Upper Crust are about to have their digestive tracts renovated by a push broom?

10290203

10290023
I never would have guessed.

10290104
Yeah, there's a lot of asshats poppin' themselves out of the woodwork lately. The hypocrisy is real, eh?

But yeah, on the parenthood thing? I totes headcanon that Ocellus is Pharynx's daughter that he secretly fawns over and dotes on. Thorax pretends not to notice just to be nice.

They're just like 20-somthin votes. Honestly, acknowledging it probably gives bad intentioned voters(some may just not like the fics) a rush. Besides, front pagers (the actual target) get at least 200+.
The ratio is enough.

This my fav so far, but it's still early. I don't really down but I rarely up either, here's a uppie pal.

Okay, I’m going to be upfront with you here and now. I’m gay. Gay as the day as long.

is

“Did… did you just seriously just say no takesy backsies?” Sandbar asked before tossing a glance skywards. “There are some phrases that should[1] be uttered by some creatures, and that’s one of them.”

[1] I assume this should be either shouldn't or should not

The worst thing I can say about this story is that it's simple.

Doesn't make it bad though. It had some fun characterization and decent interactions. All in all, a fun little story.

Dont really get the dislikes to be honest.

...Okay, don't take this the wrong way, but at some point I'm totally gonna have to steal this headcanon off you 'coz it's just that intriguing.
:P

Freudian slip, he was thinking about ass

This fic was quite cute! I'm glad you contributed to the event, it's a really rad one.

I thought that the dialogue (especially the cute bantz between Gallus and Sandbar) was adorable and you've got a decent handle on the Young Six. The resolution was really quick but felt strangely okay to me, kind of like the ending to a show episode. I'll admit that I'm not the biggest fan of how the discrimination was portrayed (it feels a bit strange to me that Celestia never outlawed hate speech/groups like a million years ago) but it didn't take away from the overall experience so much because I knew that the focus was more on the idea of Gallus and his friends fighting for change rather than the actual process/semantics of it. Thanks for writing this!

Also your cover art was drawn by my boyfriend! And he's pleased to see that you liked it enough to use it

I have nothing to say other than I greatly enjoyed this story.

Why is his last name Gruff if Gruff ain't his Grandpa?

suspicious squinting

Nice change of pace to see a (hella cute) gay fic in this veritable ocean of lesbian fics. I do like the lesbian fics too, mind you, but as the saying goes... Variety is the spice of life!

“You could protest,” Smolder said. “Hold a rally! Gays against inbred idiots!”

It's hard to believe that legal homophobia or incest would exist in Equestria. Bigots and degenerates existing without the law on their side and against the mainstream? Yeah, I could see that happening. But unless the rulers have absorbed some of that prejudice themselves, having absolute rulers who have ruled for so long permit this kind of social climate existing is a little more toward the iffy side. I still think that this story was fairly well-written, though multiple passages came across as oddly human (reading singular "God" for example). I would strongly consider editing those out and trying to keep the references as alien as possible in order to suit your setting.

That aside, seeing how homophobia developed differently in Equestria and the strong chemistry you give these two adorable dudes were very interesting. I would love to see a follow-up to this and how these snarky dorks continue to take on the world. It's definitely one of the entries for Pride and Positivity that I've enjoyed the most.

This is in a weird place where it's drawing too heavily from reality while simultaneously being too idealistic (for reality; this would of course be the way the situation plays out in Equestria). Also, apart from Silverstream, making all the Student Six related to the leaders of their homes was a really weird choice. I mean, it makes sense on some level, but then again we've also seen Ocellus's family, and Pharynx was not part of it.

10614279
Yeah, this was a really weird fic for me writing wise given I knew on some level it was unrealistic but I still wanted to try and broach this in a halfway believable way. So it really came down to ponies worrying about breeding and the like, admittedly even that's a stretch but best I could come up with.

And honestly, I sorta headcanon Ocellus is Pharynx's daughter/niece that he dotes on and Thorax pretends not to notice.

Niece I can grok. :) I do like the idea of him being doting (and probably very in denial about it).

This is great writing! Love the presence of LGBT! We don’t get enough of that in the common media(though it does seem to be changing) ALSO! GalBar is a ship I support 100%

This was awesome and so cute I'm jealous of those two 😍

Oh Enlil , he was turning mushy. Sandbar had to be rubbing off on him. He just had to be. He didn’t used to be this way.

But didn't Sandbar just say he wasn't gonna do that.
