Daedalus Aegle

Black Lives Matter. Good things are good, actually. I write about wizards and wizards' apprentices. 90% of prophecy is just pattern recognition.

"Grimalkin" is a fantastic word both in general and as a griffon-specific slur.

I did the Trek of Treachery across Mount Calumny five times.

There's a story. Though I'm not sure I can afford what it would cost to get him to tell it in full.

Wonderful tale of a peculiar sort of friendship. Thank you for it.

When will they get married?

First we need the obligatory scene of AJ drinking cider as a coping mechanism after hearing Granny and Gruff making noises in her room.

I just realized grandpa gruff is basically grunkle ststan in griffon skin

Excellent job on the exchanges, characterizations and general wrap-up in this one-shot. Yeah, Granny Smith and Grandpa Gruff bonding over haggling over apples was pretty enjoyable AND makes a lot of sense.

[“Why do you come all this way?” Granny Smith demanded. “Yanno you could just send the order in the mail like everypony else.”

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” Grandpa Gruff jabbed an accusing talon vaguely in her direction. “You could send just anything! No, I want to see before I buy. Buying unseen – might as well throw your bits into Abysmal Abyss.”]

Gruff: Besides, I already know our mail carrier would get too distracted flying to Canterlot to visit your new ruler's gosh darn Royal Advisor."

Smith: At least Gabby knows how to be respectful!

Gruff: She's good at a lot of things, but knowing the right price for certain goods isn't one of them.

Smith: Good at a lot of things? Why, Gruff, you just admitted something nice about somebody else, even if it was a fellow griffon.

Gruff: A simple slip of the tongue, but I'm not falling for your distractions.

But, yeah, as I said, this story had some VERY good work behind it.

Grandpa Gruff sniffed it suspiciously, and took a bite. “Awful.” He took another bite.

Better get a few more bushels to get a more statistically significant sample for better p-values and confidence intervals.

I really like how you portrayed Granny and Gruff here. It really feels like two old ponies/griffons who grew up in a harsh, unforgiving world that has now improved and has mostly forgotten about them, like they are the only ones that can still understand. Feels a bit like Richard Thompson's My Enemy

I've never gotten the hang of haggling, but I know it when I see it, and I definitely see it in this story. I did like how it all wrapped up though - nice twist :ajbemused:

It's funny some of the things people can bond over. :ajsmug:

Grandpa Gruff raised his beak. “I could buy oranges from Manehattan instead.”

Granny Smith’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “You wouldn’t dare… Not even you would sink so low. You would be the sworn enemy of all my kin unto seven generations! Honest ponies would turn y’away at the door, and the very grass would shy away from your paws!”

Way to stand up for your cousins, grandma. Is your Alzheimer's kicking in again?

Was anyone else thinking that this was a ship fic?

No? Just me?

Alright...

“Will do.” Granny Smith looked back to the house. “I’ll put you down for 35 bits a barrel, same as reg’lar.”

“Good.” He looked up at the mountains on the horizon. “Well… I gotta catch the good winds back to Griffonstone. See you in a moon.”

“Yeh,” Granny Smith said. She stretched her legs, heard the creaking in her back as she shuffled around and climbed the step to the front door of the house. “See ya around, ya old bird.”

I love how they pretty much did all that for nothing XD

Good thing he didn't say "pears".

Grandpa Gruff raised his beak. “I could buy oranges from Manehattan instead.”

Jokes on you, they're half-siblings to the apples.

Late Saturday night, let's reply to some comments!

I believe the point of the Trek of Treachery is that you either figure out who's lying about the protective charm, or you have to sacrifice someone's life to get across the chasm. Suffice it to say it is too long a story to include here :derpytongue2:

Clearly multiple people had this thought. To which I say: It's a shipfic if you want it to be.

10262847
They are good people and they know what they're about.

Maybe try a couple dozen more fruit pastry recipes just in case one of them isn't terrible.

Naaaw, it's about haggling. No deeper meanings going on here, nosirree. Just a fun, little story about some haggling. Definitely nothing about wondering how you cope with old age and feelings of uselessness and being left behind by changing times. Honest apple.

10263134
It really is.

I think you mean "The black sheep that turned their tails on honest country living and almost ripped her grandfoal away with their highfalutin' big-city ways".

It would work worse with the Pears. They've made peace with the Pears. And truth be told, there just aren't that many anti-apple fruits out that she could be mad at to choose from.

Thanks for reading, everyone.

So, what I’m hearing is, this is how Hippogriffs are made?

10273521
Well, AJ has a vendetta against strawberries now, so that's a start.

I've seen you around a lot before, but somehow I've never actually read anything of yours until now.

Apparently you're good at writing old people arguing.

10677888
Thanks!

I have to confess the same is true of you. Not the old people arguing, but the other part. Which of your stories would you recommend I check out? A one-shot for preference.

10678504

Agh. Tough question. Depends what you're looking for, I guess? I have a few highlights listed on my userpage, but I'd probably say Devil's Dues is the safest bet.

I love this as an interaction. These two having a history together (good or bad or both) is something there must be more of in this site as a whole.

11356322
Thanks! And, I agree. I'm pretty sure when I wrote this it was the only story on the site with these two together. It's hard to tell since Grandpa Gruff doesn't have his own character tag, but I couldn't find any with a search of Granny Smith/Griffons.

11357686
Would you suppose it would be alright if I made a fic as a non-official prequel / spin-off to this as to how the two met? No promises, though.

11358071
Thanks  (Again, no promises. I probably will, just… not right away).

11358229
*stares at pile of unfinished projects* ...No pressure.

11358259
*stares at the Mount Everest of projects* No, of course not.
