Silverstream looked forward to showing a potential new hippogriff student how fun the School of Friendship is, but those hopes were shot when a stallion showed up to a party they went to dressed as the Storm King. Now Silverstream finds things moving faster at the school than she can handle.

My first attempt at a dramatic story; not sure I'll try this again, haha.

"Those who believe that Racism is 'No big deal,' have never been on the receiving end of it."

Tell me about it. A lot of people at my school thought nothing about making Nazi jokes in my general viscinity.

I'm part German. I'm speaking more in terms of offensive jokes and behaviour.

Question: Is this before or after “What Lies Beneath?”

If it was before, than Silverstream and Coral would have been more cowering in terror and not just be offended. Feels like something that could have been explored.

However, if it was after, I don’t think Silver would have found it as such a big deal either since she would have overcame her fear of the Storm King. Coral Wisp however wouldn’t have, so this story should have focused on her and not Silver.

Halfway through and story comes off as heavy handed virtue signaling using the characters as mouthpieces.

Happy to see this is getting a much more positive reaction than I expected.

This is after the flashback portions of "The Last Problem", hence Starlight being headmare (incidentally, forgot that ponyism when writing this, but contest rules say not to edit after submission). Even if Silverstream is no longer scared of the Storm King, the fact that a pony would deliberately evoke him to make offensive jokes would still upset her. Like, no one is scared of a Hitler costume, but someone wearing one says a lot about them as a person. Silverstream likes to see the best in people, but she has a hard time wrapping her head around this. Even Cozy Glow was trying to accomplish something through her actions.

I started from the prompt of a racist incident happening at the school, and I went ahead with how I felt characters would act. Like do you think Ocellus wouldn't try to bring a feelings forum to the school, given it's established that the changelings view it as a positive addition to their hive?

Hello, organizer of the Self-Isolation Writing Contest here. Thanks for submitting the story.
You are completely free to edit the story until the deadline, which is in 7 more hours. At the deadline, all stories will be downloaded and only these final versions will be judged. You can still edit your story after the deadline for your readers, but these edits will not be considered in the contest.

Ah, got it. Thanks.

I’d like to present a counterpoint to your Hitler costume comparison with Taika Watiti playing Hitler in the film JoJo Rabbit.

No one seems to be too hot and bothered by that and even if they were, is it right to punish someone for liking something?

10222026
Comparing the situation in the fic to Jojo Rabbit is disingenuous. I'm not going to engage in a conversation going along those lines.

10222052
Why would such a line of question be disingenuous?

In any case, fair enough.

My issue really stems from the fact you don't go into specifics over what EXACTLY happened during the incident in question. You never said what specific jokes he was talking about, you just said "bad jokes," but don't go any further than that.

I feel we can both agree that saying "Ha Ha Hippogriffs are weak" is OBVIOUSLY species-ist, but if he was actually going "Ha Ha Look how stupid I am," I can see why Hippogriffs would be bothered by that, but it would be more likely that this was more of a stupid decision rather than a malicious decision, and thus should be treated more with "You idiot" rather than "You monster" kind of responses. The problem is that we are getting the latter responses when we don't have enough evidence from a reader's perspective to prove otherwise.

I'm NOT saying he's innoncent here, but there's a big difference when something is done out of ignorance and something out of malicious intent. In my belief, when something is done out of ignorance, then there should be a more gentler aproach that focuses on changing minds rather than punishment, because that just leads to alienation and doesn't fix anything.

So, the fact that the characters treat this as a malicious action when there isn't enough evidence for the reader to agree, then that brings the premise of the story into question.

In short, I just feel like being more specific would have really helped this story.

OK, I understand that issue. I decided not to go into specifics about what exactly happened because I felt narrowing down what a racist hippogriff joke would actually look like wasn't the right headspace for me to go into. That said, the intention was the kind of guy you see show up to college parties in blackface or Nazi uniforms as an attempt to get a reaction out of people, only to complain when he gets into trouble for it.

Okay, I can see that line of thinkung. However, there is a bit of a disconnect.

See, Blackface and Nazi dressup are supposed to evoke a GROUP, but what happened here was evoking an INDIVIDUAL.

Now, if the stallion dressed up as a Yeti soldier and not THE Strom King, then I can see the comparison there, but when it's blatently supposed to be an individual then that brings to question of whether he's doing so to mock the individual he's dressed as or to terrify hippogriffs. Know what I mean?

I kinda like how school halfway trying to “cheer” silverstream up halfway came off as a bit of a disconnect. It’s not that there bad people (ponies) but it shows that they do t really get it, if you know what I mean.
I do feel a bit more context to the actual event would have made the argument for the fic a little better, especially these days when events like these happen and there either blown out of proportion or undermined because there’s not enough context to them.
Still was pretty good, also love to see the young six doing there thing.

I love the concept, great story. It could be a dark MLP episode, still great regardless
