Having spent time at the Royal Guard Academy, not long after finishing the School of Friendship, Gallus arrives at the Canterlot Palace for his first day as an officer in the Royal Guard. He was ordered to start late to visit Griffonstone and now has to wait in order to meet the Captain.

While he waits, his guardian Grandpa Gruff makes an unexpecting visit to talk with him, although because of how badly their already rough relationship ended, Gallus is rather reluctant to do so.

Wow, that was quite a story. I was kinda of hoping they would hug in the end but it is what it is. I wonder where Gruff went in the end since he like disappeared without a trace?

Anyway, It's nice that Grandpa Gruff not only admitted that he wasn't much of a good guardian to Gallus but also admitted he was proud of him.

Edit: That funeral at Griffonstone that Gallus went to.... now that's a twist

I think the notion was that in the end, Gruff and Gallus just went their own separate ways.

Kinda funny that his last words to Gallus was that he should start a family lol

I just re-read the story it said Gallus was starting his job late because he came from a funeral at Griffonstone.... A funeral

That, sir, was a damn good read.

It was an even better re-read, cause holy frick that twist really gives such a heavy tone.

Damn good, Dammit. Damn.

Wait, funeral? Who's funeral was Gallus attending?

Excellent work on this. Excellent indeed. Loved the twist it the end...

"For all that was said and for all that was left unsaid, once the opportunity has passed, all any of us can ask is whether or not we made the right decision. For most of us, we will live out of lives never knowing but, for a lucky few of us, that question will eventually be answered."

Fantastic little read!! I’ve always wanted to see more of Gallus and Gruff. You did an excellent job! :yay:

10195756 Well, Grandpa Gruff said he was sick.

Yeah, there was a reason I decided to included the "Sad" tag in this one.

yeah, that came outta nowhere like the Spanish Inquisition. Not what I was expecting when I read the sad tag. Good work.

Good god, that twist...

Took me a minute to get the twist at the end, but when it sank in... jeez. Interesting, that's for sure.

Oof. Sucker punch to the feels.

Well done.

So mind explaining this? Where did Gallus come up with Gruff's side of the conversation if he was already dead? Was there a letter he was pulling from?

He would have been told things by other griffons at the funeral since they talked about how Grampa Gruff was proud of him and all. He would have also been told stuff by Gabby and Gilda, they went to his graduation ceremony so they would have been the link between the two griffons. Any other bits he would have just imagined from knowing Grampa Gruff for so long.

Okay. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the story and I appreciate you writing it. You really painted a great example of how a relationship can be two different things to different people.

That twist!!
That's some good stuff right there!

EDIT: After making this comment, I was about to leave the page, but then I started to think about my parents.

Me and my parents in a nutshell (they're still alive)

:raritycry::raritycry::raritycry: That was so much sadder than what I was expecting!

The administrator from earlier left me to find Captain Armour Plate, it probably wasn’t her intention to leave me on my own in the corridor. "I wasn't on my own for long, sir. Actually, I was..." I turned back around, but no-one was down the other side of the corridor. It was like Grandpa Gruff left without even making a sound.

At first when I was reading this one he probably left because Grandpa Gruff didn't wanted to ruin his moment of whatever but then I read this part

The Captain gave a small comforting smile. “I wouldn’t worry about starting a few days later than your friends from the Academy, I’m sure you’ll be able to catch up with the help of your Lieutenant” he reassured me. “Besides, I find Princess Twilight’s decision to be fully reasonable. From my own experience, even the most battle-hardened soldier needs some time to themselves after returning from a funeral.”

I was like oh my God Grandpa Gruff is dead and he was just basically talking to a ghost or figuring imagination that's actually pretty sad

Grandpa Gruff 😔

Wow I didn't see that coming to be honest with you so with that said gallus was waiting for the captain to talk to him but a very unexpected guess came in it was Grandpa Gruff both of them were kind of talking to each other kind of cold but with a lot of heart to heart talk it was really nice to see them without them arguing just a little bit but apparently when the captain came in apparently Grandpa Gruff was gone that apparently gallus attended to his funeral a few days ago that basically he was talking to a ghost or is Imagination it was sad to see it ended like that way between them but somehow he at peace with him and like what he said

I couldn’t help but agree with him, the friends I made at the school of friendship and the royal guard academy got me through this far, not to mention the teachers along the way. In the end, it was still Grandpa Gruff who got me to that point of finding them.

This was a pretty good story and very sad to keep up the good work

Wow, imagine that the last time you’ve ever talked to someone was during an argument.

I'm crying

What a a way to say "I forgive you Grandpa, goodbye"

A nice oof in the feels twist at the end.

I have several family members IRL who get along like Gallus and Grandpa Gruff. I try to sometimes be a mediator but other times I want to stuff cotton in my ears and vanish into a book until the windows stop shaking from the yelling.
