Radio. The first national broadcast across Equestria is about to happen. But even as radio towers are raised across the nation, Princess Twilight calls upon three musicians to make it truly historic.

If radio is to be more than a passing fad, how can it prove its worth? And if faraway music is to be heard in ponies' homes across the land, what song shall be the first to grace the airwaves?

RIP Neil Peart:fluttershysad:

Excellent story!

Especially the ponies clustered around their radios to hear their princess for the first time...seems so far distant for humans, and yet live radio broadcasts ate only about a century old.

TDR

Very nice

'Tis indeed a distant, early warning of the march of progress.

Oh... oh, wasn't expected to get hit in the gut today.

Begin the day
With a friendly voice
A companion, unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood...

“And you’re tellin’ me you don’t recognize Sapphire Shores?” she asked, tossing back her mane haughtily.

why did I read that in Tiffany Haddish's voice XD

Beautiful story!

One likes to believe is the freedom of music

Ri2

Sapphire Shores is an Earth Pony, not a unicorn.

Was Turing involved in this?

This fic is incredible!

Oh, shoot! I don't know how I got that wrong! Thanks for the correction.

Anyway, fixed it. And since in The Iron Horse, Turing Test is the Minister of Technology, yes, she would have been involved.

In the description:
"If radio is to be more than a passing fad, how can it prove its worth."
"If radio is to be more than a passing fad, how can it prove its worth?"?

"about this new media, but far"
"about this new medium, but far"?

And I enjoyed both the story and the song. :)

3 musicians...

I hear the Sirens are available! :raritywink:

This kinda calls for a "My Bride is a Mermaid" crossover... what with the magical mermaid mind-control music.

Glad you liked it! And it seems even when you're not officially editing, you still keep those skills sharp. Thanks as usual, buddy.

Heh, aye; thanks, and you're welcome. :)

Quick question before reading: How does this relate to the s9 finale? Or does it take place in an alternate timeline?

10113572
This would take place a bit after episode 25, but well before the distant finale of episode 26.

"Wow. And some bowed to their radios?"
"Well, I was speaking."
"Not like you could see them."
"Be nice, it's new for them."
"Yeah, fair." Sunset Shimmer couldn't help but smile. "Still, imagine how they'll react to the first TV broadcast."
Twilight—at least in this world, she could pretend she didn't have the title—shook her head despite her smile. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves."

Wonderful bit of intermingled scientific and cultural progress. Thank you for a great read.

I meant to respond to this, but I got a bit distracted with current events.

First, that's a pretty funny and realistic take on how Twilight and Sunset would probably discuss it. Second, the detail about bowing to the radio was something I based on some accounts of how Japanese citizens and military heard Emperor Hirohito announcing Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. According to many accounts, many Japanese, having never heard the Emperor's voice before and not knowing what to do, bowed to the radio in reverence. Just a neat little historical detail I decided to borrow for this short story.
