Heartland Picker

"We're all about one thing: more power! Argh! Argh! ARGH!"

Sequels1

T

This story is a sequel to Starlight's New Drinking Buddy

Ben may have gained a kinship in Ponyville. That doesn't mean he'll be all rosy about that time of year.

This makes his new drinking buddy, Starlight, beyond the point of concerned. It may be possible that an intervention may not only help him out of his holiday funk, but maybe her own as well.

I strongly recommend that you read the previous story to get some context for this one.

'what was I thinking? How could I expect an ape to behave like a gentlecolt?'

Rasist bitch!

-Love the chapter, by the way.

How closely were you reading?
Also, to quote Silver Quill, it's speciesist. :raritywink:

I read enough to understand that Ben was being a little temperamental because of the holidays and that in turn upset Rose, but that doesn't mean it's okay for her to use the term ape. She doesn't get to use that word.:twilightangry2:

Great chapter! Glad to see you back up and writing, my friend

This seems to be a good start for the sequel! I enjoyed it and consider it a nice Christmas/Hearths Warming present! And thanks for the heads up that it’s not going to be as light as the first one. that you posted this!

Wow. That was a fitting song for his mood. First time I’ve heard it! The holidays can be really rough on people. Hopefully they’ll see there’s something wrong and take a different tact than what they set out to do! I enjoyed this chapter, as well as the first. I’m hooked.

There’s always a reason people get hammered like this. I really hope Twilight and the others do realize this fact.

Good chapter, though it could use a glance-over for edits

I’m not really sure what to think of this chapter.

Very interesting chapter. Kind of horrific in a way. Being Christian, but not Catholic, I understand how terrifying that dream could be. He feels his eternal soul is at risk, no Eucharist, no confession, no penitence for forgiveness and no last rites. That is pretty darn heavy. I’ll be interested in how you proceed with this. I like how you’ve portrayed Luna here.

I am going to call bull on him being put off by not receiving communion. I am also Catholic and the church teaches several things and not receiving communion is prefaced by not having a valid excuse such as coma or in this case not the same universe. He is stranded in a complete other universe so there is no real way for him to receive the sacrament.

At this point he could go without this sacrament but would be required to try and follow his faith to the best of his ability. So he could arbitrarily choose a time for lent and maintain the two required fast days. He would be covered by close enough is good enough. Now I will give leeway that he had a strict and more orthodox upbringing but I would have thought the wiggle room would have been covered. Still I hope Luna can help him find some peace because this is not going to help Ben out as it will slowly drive him into depression if he cannot find some spiritual peace. Plus I cannot remember which pope said if any aliens wanted to be baptized he would gladly allow it.

Otherwise this was a good chapter and hopefully if what I think happened between him and Starlight happened I hope he tries to make a real relationship with her more then this event.

Hence the absence of the comedy tag.

10014473
You've got the idea. Thanks for the comment about Luna. I tend to think that her long life gives her a better grasp of reading others than her sister: she's seems more inclined to take the "man to man" approach in counseling. She's seen the darker side of things. Celestia reminds me of the young rich man whose faith was questioned by Jesus. Even to the end she still erred on the side of arrogance.

10014487
There's more to it than that. (Might save the clarification for the next chapter: might make for good dialogue). You missed a key one: the interspecies relationships that all too often end up in several HiE stories. Ponies would think he's just being stubborn, but he knows better (please re-read the chapter). To me, that annoying trope needed to be addressed (sorry Donnnnn). What do you think happened between him and Starlight?

10014487
Yeah, I’m with Heartland. Nothing really happened between Ben and Starlight, they’re just good friends

When I wrote that comment I had yet to read the prior story, by the time I had you had been back on the site and I felt you had seen my comment so I choose not to edit it, so I thought they had done the horizontal tango. Now that I have read that story I know they didn't. As for a relationship I understand that I see you don't want to do it and Ben doesn't want one as well. I enjoy the fact that this story isn't going that way and I am looking forward to see what happens next chapter.

10015522
Yeah, sorry about that, I'm a bit of a dick. I'll make a note to have folks read the other story first.

I like how Twilight is beginning to realize that this will not be a simple fix. I hope when she finds out she can offer to help him with the concerns he has to the best of her ability.

Well, at least they know that they were being idiots now. That’s good.........right?

Well, I don’t mind long stories. So if the ideas keep coming I’ll keep reading.

This was my favorite chapter thus far. A very appropriate use of theological truth to enhance a fantasy story, well done. I am also glad how you addressed the taboo of pony/human romantic relationships and the inappropriateness of them.
This is not seen very often in HiE stories so I appreciate it greatly.

I will be curious to see where you take this as I strongly disapprove of pony/human romances. It seems I misjudged your first story because I did not know the context you were building to.

Not sure what to think about Ben’s beliefs. Don’t really wanna start an argument here though, and it is a good story so far

10042314
The thing is, it's not what anyone else's opinions regarding his faith are, it's what HE believes that matters. How 'right' or 'wrong' that is, is irrelevant.

What we have is a person that has an incredibly strong sense of faith and belief that is, to his view, being tested harder than it has ever been tested before, and his struggles with all that entails.

10043066
I know, but I meant the way he spoke to Rose. He had no right to insult her like that

10043078
Right or not, he did. He also knows that he shouldn't have, mentions that he needs to apologise to her for that, but was told to cool his jets a bit and stay put for the moment.

So he knows he done messed that up, and wants to make amends.

That being said, Rose had no right to keep pushing her advances on him after he had told her "no". So they both made their own mistakes, and well... whether they learn something from it is an entirely different matter altogether.

Wow, nobody wants to address Filthy Rich's state. Disappointing. :pinkiesad2:

10043470
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. That's really sad actually:fluttershyouch:

10043078
Didn't initially respond due to likelihood of hangups being theological. But yeah, the whole thing with Rose is actually not unheard of in the real world.

10043096
Hit the nail on the head. As a common layman, there's only so much that he can take before he snaps, much like dealing with a stubborn bull.

I know this isn't that kind of story but, for a moment there, I thought he was going to close the door then open it to find a fourth mare staring at him. Rinse and repeat until there is quite a worried crowd.

This chapter was well written and presented. It does a good job explaining a touchy subject that sparks a lot of debate. Glad to see someone taking this bull by the horns, well done.

10087720
That's a relief. I was thinking I might be off-base in the reasoning.
It's just the most logical explanation that I could come up with (haven't had time to read the Catechism for the last few years, life's crazy).

10087806
Technically he can still make things right with God even in the absence of sacramental confession. He would need to make a perfect act of contrition, to ask God for that Grace.
He is in an unusual situation.
Personally I would have done without the flashback to Rose as it is a bit risque and sensual:facehoof:

I am glad that Rose has come to an understanding with Ben. I find it odd that Ben came from a world where he was from the only sapient species there. It could have been so most of the town would understand if he was surprised by any of the other beings that could be showing up. Still now she knows and hopefully she can help by being a good friend in the future.

10099923
What I meant was that it was "our" Earth that he originated from: we're self-aware and capable of reasoning and free will. My apologies for the confusion.

10099950

Bangs my head against a cement wall. That comment was heavily edited prior to publication and I missed something during the last pass. I was going for Twilight should have told the ponies in Ponyville about the uniqueness of Ben’s world. That was what I was going for, I took that Ben came from a world similar to ours. That is all on me.

10099984
It wasn't just you. I completely forgot about the small box in his pocket until a few minutes ago. It's updated.

Glad he patched things up with Rose.
Nothing can exist apart from God so yeah, He would have created this world too.:raritywink:

10109278
As far as we know, that world doesn't exist. At least, we don't know, and we're likely not meant to. :unsuresweetie:Rather not go down that rabbit hole.

10109345
All I'm saying that if it existed, God created it

10109357
Probably the unmentioned creatures from Eden?

Beautiful, just beautiful. I do agree using O Come All Ye Faithful over Adeste Fidelis as those lyrics are easier to remember and probably a lot easier to sing quickly.

Wow! This was awesome. I sense a sequel. Easter? And a revelation of exactly why Jesus was born? That will have a profound effect on the ponies.

10135701
I just couldn't find a Latin version that did it justice.

10136519
Question: You're not squeamish, are you?

10136569
Let’s just say that me and another kid were the only ones able to watch the movies the driver’s education class played to scare children into driving carefully and it didn’t bother us. He was taking classes to be an EMT and I started going on fatalities with my dad when I turned sixteen. When we were chastised for not paying attention we grossed the driving teacher out by talking about what it was like to actually be on fatal accidents and the gallows type humor shared by the State Police,Fire Fighters, Ambulance and wrecker crews.

Wow, I did not see this coming. How very beautiful and touching:twilightsmile:
Great job!

10136941
I see that I didn't disappoint. Thank you. :twilightblush:
