This story takes place in an alternate universe (they are humans, not ponies).
Twilight Sparkle is given a Scholarship to attend Headmistress Celestia and Vice Headmistress Luna's Princess Preparatory, a school for young Princesses in the making. This is because her brother, Shining Armor, is attending the school's "brother school"; Prince and Knight Academy. Which is led by Headmaster Thorax and Vice Headmaster Pharynx. Shining attends because he is courting Princess Cadence, who is like Twilight's sister. Her brother, Spike, is with Shining at Prince Academy. Twilight Sparkle meets six other girls, who are born Princesses. They help her to succeed in the Royal School. But there are many obstacles they must face.
Meanwhile, at Prince and Knight Academy, Shining Armor and Spike have made friends with five certain boys. When they are asked to have a joint class with the ladies of Princess Prepratory, they fall in love with certain girls. Together the boys and girls strive to complete their years and graduate, working together to solve problems (and fall in love while they're at it)

I love that Thorax here feels like the Thorax we got after Ember counseled him on being assertive and Pharanx finally got with the program. Playful and mischievous, but knowing when to put his hoof/foot down and not being afraid to do so. That Thorax is best Thorax, and it makes me happy.
The movie wouldn't be The Parent Trap would it? I haven't seen it, and I don't plan to, but I know it's about two twin girls who meet and realize their parent's are divorced and switch places to try and get them back together. But the plan gets complicated because one of the girls was raised in a middle class home and the other was in a high society home.

I didn't want to make an OC for Rarity to go with, so I chose him. I also just think they'd look good together, as they both seemed equally enthusiastic about fashion and seemed to be able to read the other's minds.
I like this chapter, and I like Dareing's character. I think this is what's really been missing from this story, personal attachment to the characters. So far almost every princess/Prince/other has been introduced as part of a group or in tandem with someone else. We know about them and a little of their back story, but we don't really know them on a personal level. Look at the first few episodes of Season 1, we get the two part premiere and Ticket Master, both serving as basic introductions to the show, the world and the ponies. Then we start meeting the ponies one-on-one or two at a time with episodes like Griffon the Brush Off, Dragonshy and Sleepless in Ponyville. We got to see the pony's personal lives much more intimately than we did before. And I feel like this is the direction this story needs to go now, seeing the personal lives of the individual princesses.

I love the dynamic between Thorax and Pharanx here. Thorax clearly loves and respects Pharanx as an older brother, yet also recognizes that their are times when he has to act like the older sibling. Such brothers they are, and I say that to mean it feels like a real, healthy sibling dynamic.

I'm jealous of the amount of variety you girls can have in your formal wear. You can change skirt length, sleeve length, neck style. You can choose to add jewelry, scarves, belts, a shall. Or you could wear a tuxedo and pants, or a tuxedo and skirt. And all of that in every color under the sun.
Meanwhile us menfolk are limited to our dress shirts, tuxedos, dress pants, and neckties. And we get our choice of white clothing or black clothing. If we wish to add some variety, we're put on the proverbial chopping block for disrupting the peace.
This is exaggerated, but nevertheless, I would like a little variety in men's formal wear.
